Book excerpt: This thesis aims to answer three main questions ; how can one explain andinterpret the structure of an innovation network, are there positions in a network which allowfor an increased performance for firms and finally, are there network structures which favourinnovation ? In order to answer these questions, the thesis is organised in three parts.The first part presents, in a first chapter, an analytical review of the literature followed by achapter presenting the theory behind one of the network analysis methods: ExponentialRandom Graph Models (ERGM).The second part of the thesis presents three empirical analyses. The first empirical chapteranalyses the impact of the life-cycle of the technology on the structural dynamics of thecollaboration network for Structural Composite Materials. The following two chapters focuson two sectors, the aerospace and biotech sector. The aim of these chapters is to analyse thestructural dynamics of collaboration networks as well as identifying a link between networkposition and firm performance.The third and final part of this thesis searches for network structures which might favourinnovation. An Agent-Based Model is used to answer this final question.

In addition, we also sent invitations to researchers that are famous in this research area to contribute for this book. The chapters of this book are introduced as follows: In chapter 1-Graph Model for Pattern Recognition in Text, Qin Wu et al. present a novel approach that uses a weighted directed multigraph for text pattern recognition. In the proposed methodology, a weighted directed multigraph model has been set up by using the distances between the keywords as the weights of arcs as well a keyword-frequency distance based algorithm has also been introduced. Case studies are also included in this chapter to show the performance is better than traditional means.

Book excerpt: Small businesses play a very important role in every economy hence their prosperity is a concern to all. In south Africa, recent researches have indicated low levels of performance and high attrition rate among small businesses. It is generally accepted that small business’s survival is threatened by their larger business counterparts that are able to utilise their vast resources to their advantage. Fortunately, research evidence suggests that the ability of small businesses to compete with their bigger counterparts lies in their ability to engage in innovative activities. However, the sustainability of such innovative activities, depends on knowing which factors drive innovation the most in small businesses. In the present study it is theorized that when emerging construction firms engage in social networks (internally and externally) and innovate, they will be more competitive and experience better firm performance. This problem is explicated in the conceptual framework from the perspective of social capital theories, especially social networks. In general terms, this study contends that, small firms can rely on their social networks (both internal and external) to innovate in order to enhance their competitiveness and performance. Specifically, from social capital theory, it is argued that the resources embedded in social networks can be utilised by Emerging Construction Firms (ECFs) to be innovative and competitive for better firm performance. A literature review preceded the empirical study to fully comprehend the theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of the interaction between social networks, innovation, competitiveness and firm performance. Thereafter, 16 hypotheses were formulated based on the conceptual framework. Data were then collected from 800 ECFs graded at category 1 to 7 by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) in the Free State province of South Africa. A key finding from mainstream literature is that due to resource limitations, smaller firms like ECFs will always find it difficult to compete with their big business counterparts on innovation and performance when they rely on money and tangible assets only. Literature also overwhelmingly indicates that innovation is enhanced by collaborative ability. Further, the literature reviews also strongly indicated a positive relationship between innovation and firm performance. The major empirical findings of this study are: · Strong positive relationship exists between networking, innovation and ECFs’ performance. · Both product and process innovation positively impacted ECFs’ performance. Implications of these and other findings are presented and discussed in this research thesis alongside recommendations for research, policy and practice.

Book excerpt: Social networks matter in the innovation processes of young and small firms, since lsquo;innovation does not exist in a vacuum (Van De Ven, 1986: 601).' The contacts a firm has could both generate advantages for further innovation and growth, and disadvantages leading to inertia and stagnation. In the first case the existing social network or the new business contact provides opportunities furthering eventual success, in the second case, the existing network or the new business contacts turns out to have a constraining or even detrimental effect on performance. The search and use of social capital is driven by goal-specificity: it only includes those ties that help the actor in the attainment of particular goals. Most of the research so far has been deliberately or unwillingly one-sided, by for instance only looking at entrepreneurial firms in dynamic industries (or more specifically, start-ups in the high-tech industries). Or selective attention has been paid to either the internal sources or the external contacts to trigger innovation. And when a conclusive study has been conducted into investigating both the effect of internal and external ties on innovation, the sample often includes large and established companies and managers (instead of entrepreneurs and smaller firms, as what we are interested in). The main line of reasoning in this paper is as follows. In the first section we discuss the key network concepts, such as, social capital, relational embeddedness (strong and weak ties), structural embeddedness (i.e. structural holes). Section two deals with innovation and the central role of knowledge in the discovery and realisation of innovations. Social networks and its potential for knowledge brokering appear to be important and therefore the last section focuses on the relationship between particular network characteristics and innovation.

Conversely, what makes some firms consistently perform worse than their competitors? Within a single corporation, what enables some teams or individual firm members to outperform their counterparts? Through the concept of social capital, this book addresses these questions by studying the effects of relationship networks on the ability of corporate players (firms and their members) to attain their professional goals. The idea of social capital has become one of the premier approaches to studying networks in the context of organizations but the literature still lacks a conceptual paradigm that connects the various approaches, definitions and measure of social capital into an integrated analytical model. By explicitly connecting social networks to the goals of corporate players, this book provides a unifying framework to the study of social capital in an organizational context. In this volume `social capital' is defined as the resources that accrue to an actor through his or her social relationships and that aid in the attainment of goals. The book introduces the new notion of `social liability' as a framework to analyze the negative effects social networks can have on the attainment of goals by firms and/or their members. Corporate Social Capital and Liability thus presents a new way to tie together findings and approaches in the literature by explicitly addressing the distinction between networks and outcomes, the distinction between networks at the level of firms and networks at the level of individuals, and the distinction between positive outcomes of social structure (social capital) and negative outcomes (social liability). The book's contributors are forty-six acclaimed scholars from around the world with backgrounds in management, business and sociology. Together, they describe how social relationships within and between firms positively affect the ability of corporations to achieve fruitful alliances; gain access to information, resources, knowledge and financial capital; and recruit qualified personnel. The book makes an explicit distinction between networks at the level of firms and networks at the level of individuals. The outcomes of networks are also considered at these different analytical levels by addressing such questions as: how do social relationships between firms assist firms and individuals in the attainment of their goals? How do these relationships obstruct goals? What is the effect of networks between individuals (within and between firms) on the performance of these individuals and the firms they work for? Can networks be managed to yield social capital rather than social liability? The unifying framework of social capital and social liability is helpful in studying business enterprises, and also useful in other disciplines which analyze social networks and organizations, such as community studies, economics, and political science.
