The 2006 Sachar Committee Report rekindled public interest and attention in this important issue. Yet, considerable gaps exist in our understanding of the dynamics of religion and access to education. In Religion, Community, and Education, Alam uses a spatial approach and multilayered analytical framework to understand educational disparities in schooling between the Hindus and Muslims in Bihar. The study draws upon national-level data as well as focused fieldwork carried out in Bihar's Patna and Purnia districts. This book highlights the larger historical trajectories that have shaped educational development as well as the forms of disparities therein vis-à-vis the minorities in India. It contends that the relative educational backwardness of the Muslims reflects underlying socio-economic patterns that are often overlooked. Thus, the Muslims should not be seen merely as homogeneous socio-cultural aggregates.

How does the economic profile of the Muslims compare with the majority Hindus, Dalits, and minorities like Christians, Sikhs and Parsis? Muslims are the second largest religious group in West Bengal and the largest minority in this Indian state. With a population of over 20 million in absolute numbers, Muslims constitute 25 per cent of the total population of the state. The main objective of this study is to analyze the regional imbalances in the distributional pattern of Muslim, including the trend of the Muslim population over the past century and in the future and the concentration pattern of Muslim population across the state, in the context of developing an educational profile of Muslims in West Bengal. Since the religion wise data on any other educational indicator are not available at district level, this study utilizes only the data on literacy to examine the level of educational development of Muslims across the region. Finally the study examines the relationship between literacy level and concentration of Muslim population in West Bengal. The relative backwardness of the Muslim community, particularly in education, is noted as a factor in the relative economic backwardness observed among the Muslim population in India.
