A social capital model in formulated and tested. The book shows how social capital has been articulated and utilized through networks, relationships, norms, values and actions to facilitate entry and stay in these enterprises. The book provides details on how entrepreneurs constantly construct their social capital and evolve business logic and practice that is used in business transactions. The book does not only focus on theory and empirical findings but also derives lessons for poverty-alleviation strategies. It reveals that there are limitations to the application of social capital when it comes to interaction and conflict between different stakeholders in transport enterprises. The political economy model was found to be appropriate in such a case, indicating that the social capital model can be used in combination with other theoretical frameworks.

Collective Action and Property Rights for Poverty Reduction: Insights from Africa and Asia examines how these two types of institutions, separately and together, influence quality of life and how they can be strengthened to improve the livelihoods of the rural poor. The product of a global research study by the Systemwide Program on Collective Action and Property Rights (CAPRi) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, this book draws on case studies from East Africa and South and Southeast Asia to investigate how collective action and property rights have contributed to poverty reduction. The book extends the analysis of these institutions beyond their frequently studied role in natural resource management by also examining how they can reduce vulnerability to different types of shocks. Essays in the volume identify opportunities and risks present in the institutions of collective action and property rights. For example, property rights to natural resources can offer a variety of advantages, providing individuals and groups not only with benefits and incomes but also with assets that can counter the negative effects of shocks such as drought, and can make collective action easier. The authors also demonstrate that collective action has the potential to reduce poverty if it includes more vulnerable groups such as women, ethnic minorities, and the very poor. Preventing exclusion of these often-marginalized groups and guaranteeing genuinely inclusive collective action might require special rules and policies. Another danger to the poor is the capture of property rights by elites, which can be the result of privatization and decentralization policies; case studies and analysis identify actions to prevent such elite capture.

Looking at the historical landscape of the poverty debate in Sub-Saharan Africa, one cannot help but notice the silence or scarce mention of entrepreneurship as the engine for growth in the alleviation of extreme poverty. Therefore the Africa Redemption International Conference (ARIC) was conceived from the premise of a long and hard look at the serial and regrettable failures of the three salient beaten-trek interventions of Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPS), Poverty Reduction Strategies (PRS) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Earlier interventions focused more on economic growth and paid little attention to social development. With the advent of MDGs, attention somewhat shifted towards resulting in poverty being reduced by more than half between 1990 and 2015. Critical success factors including infrastructure development, domestic resource mobilization, and institutional capacity building, among others, have largely been overlooked by most of these instruments. The architecture of poverty reduction strategies has, for far too long, been the work of foreign agents with little, if any, of Africans themselves. It is generally on this very basis that the ARIC Conference was convened with the objectives to: a. Bring academics, practitioners and policy-makers into one unique place to deliberate on issues that keep Africa behind any other parts of the world in emerging out of poverty. b. Allow policymakers to chart a way forward and share that with the broader body of light-minded Africans who want to seriously take the country of scourges of poverty c. Allow academics to analyze, articulate and recommend what they perceive Africa needs to do in order to overcome its stagnation that has earned its Mantra of a Dark Continent. d. Invite development activist in the world and Africa, in particular, to share their isolated experiences with a broader community of stakeholders willing to amplify their good practice efforts to other parts of Africa where they are needed most. e. Industrialization and economic growth are almost always accompanied by urbanization (Davis 1965; World Bank 2000). However, urbanization in developing regions is a phenomenon, ascribed by a low level of economic development contradictory to the case of accelerated urbanization that began in Western Europe and North America. In some part of the world and particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, cities have been growing without a concomitant expansion of economic activity. The process of urbanization in Africa is mostly embedded on the migration trend, which is rapid and greater in volume. Consequently, its obstructive consequences are higher than those of industrial countries at the time they were rapidly urbanized (Hardiman and Midley 1989; UN-HABITAT 2003b).
