Book Policy and Politics in West Germany

Download or read book Policy and Politics in West Germany written by Peter J. Katzenstein and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we account for the lack of large-scale policy change in West Germany despite changes in the partisan make-up of the federal government? This formulation of "the German Question" differs from the one commonly posed by students of German politics, a version usually focused on Germany's tragic confrontation with modernity and a possible revival of militarism and authoritarianism. Katzenstein here uncovers the political structures that make incremental policy change such a plausible political check against the growing force of government. This book examines in detail how West German policy and politics interrelate in six problem areas: economic management, industrial relations, social welfare, migrant workers, administrative reform, and university reform. Throughout these six case studies, Katzenstein suggests that West Germany's semi-sovereign state provides the answer to the German Question as it precludes the possibility of central authority. Coalition governments, federalism, para-public institutions, and the state bureaucracy are the domestic forces that have tamed power in the Federal Republic. Author note:Peter J. Katzensteinis Professor of Government at Cornell University, as well as a former editor of International Organization.

Book The Political Economy of West Germany 1945 85

Download or read book The Political Economy of West Germany 1945 85 written by Jeremy Leaman and published by Springer. This book was released on 1988-02-09 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-war emergence of West Germany as the dominant economic power in Europe gave rise to the mythology of the 'economic miracle' and the model policies of the 'social market economy'. This study reveals a mundane reality of class politics in which democratic institutions have become increasingly marginalised by big capital and by an unelected central bank. Economic policy has failed to halt the recent slide into mass unemployment and has reverted optimistically to the plan-less export drives of the fifties. The absence of the earlier advantages, the author claims, bodes ill for the future of 'model Germany'.

Book Industry and Politics in West Germany

Download or read book Industry and Politics in West Germany written by Peter J. Katzenstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic technological developments in industrial production, the rise of new social movements in national politics, and great changes in the international political economy have left a deep imprint on the Federal Republic. A compelling explanation of West Germany's success in maintaining economic prosperity and political stability under such challenging conditions has continued to elude observers. Under the editorship of Peter J. Katzenstein, thirteen distinguished scholars from both sides of the Atlantic here provide an original interpretation of the political economy of the Bonn Republic during the forty years since its founding, and explore in particular its extraordinary capacity for accommodating change. Whereas studies in political economy have typically focused on one level of political action—either the shop floor, or national politics, or the international system—this innovative account analyzes the interaction of change at all three levels, bringing together case studies drawn from six manufacturing and service sectors.

Book The Domestic Structure of European Community Policy Making in West Germany Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Domestic Structure of European Community Policy Making in West Germany Routledge Revivals written by Simon Bulmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Republic of Germany’s position in the European Community had been described as one of interdependence, penetration and integration. Of the three terms this research addresses itself most directly to penetration: to the links between the German political system and policy-making at the Community level. These links operated in two directions. Thus membership for the European Community (EC) imposed certain constraints on German domestic policy-making. Although this research, first published in 1986, concentrates on the structural inter-relationship between the German political system and EC decisions, its main focus of attention is the articulation of German ‘interests’ in the EC policy process. This book will be of interest to students of politics and history.

Book West Germany Internal Structures and External Relations

Download or read book West Germany Internal Structures and External Relations written by Frank Pfetsch and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-07-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many recent publications deal with the substance of West German external relations, none (in English at any rate) focuses heavily upon the structure and processes of foreign policy-making. Thus, by covering the latter as well as the former, this translation of Pfetsch's book fills an important gap. The author provides a detailed, thorough, and precise outline of the institutions and instruments involved in West German foreign policy formulation. Choice What internal functions affect foreign policy making? How do non-tangible forces, such as recent German history, public opinion, the nature of the economy, etc., play a part in overall German foreign policy? In examining these questions and others, Pfetsch provides detailed data on West German political, economic, social, and cultural performances that challenge the view that interprets relations solely as a result of international structures. West Germany in International Relations demonstrates how internal, as well international, factors shape foreign policy making.
