Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social and Political Aspects of England and the Continent: A Series of Letters These observations on European society and government were printed in several American journals, and, as the editors informed me, were well received by the public. I now reprint them in a more convenient form, principally with a view to their preservation. The causes and mainsprings of many great events, which have since transpired, are clearly discernable in these brief sketches of social and political history. I will candidly confess, that Louis Napoleon has proved himself a more talented man than I supposed him to be, but no more generous or true to the interests of the French people. However, any man, on whom that brave, though fickle, nation unite to make their leader, cannot fail to be powerful both in peace and war. The ways of Providence are inscrutable, and the sun of European liberty may be only temporarily concealed by a small murky cloud. Mr. Garrison says "he could not foresee, that Death and Hell would secede from our Union of States," and he probably thought the cause of emancipation in a desperate condition at the time the Fugitive Slave Law was enacted. Let us never cease to trust in Providence and keep the powder dry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Europe and the British Geographical Imagination 1760 1830

Download or read book Europe and the British Geographical Imagination 1760 1830 written by Paul Stock and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019-10 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe and the British Geographical Imagination, 1760-1830 explores what literate British people understood by the word 'Europe' in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Was Europe unified by shared religious heritage? Where were the edges of Europe? Was Europe primarily a commercial network or were there common political practices too? Was Britain itself a European country? While intellectual history is concerned predominantly with prominent thinkers, Paul Stock traces the history of ideas in non-elite contexts, offering a detailed analysis of nearly 350 geographical reference works, textbooks, dictionaries, and encyclopaedias, which were widely read by literate Britons of all classes, and can reveal the formative ideas about Europe circulating in Britain: ideas about religion; the natural environment; race and other theories of human difference; the state; borders; the identification of the 'centre' and 'edges' of Europe; commerce and empire; and ideas about the past, progress, and historical change. By showing how these and other questions were discussed in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British culture, Europe and the British Geographical Imagination, 1760-1830 provides a thorough and much-needed historical analysis of Britain's enduringly complex intellectual relationship with Europe.

Book Convergence or Divergence

Download or read book Convergence or Divergence written by Jeremy Black and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1994-04-12 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relations with Continental Europe have been a central issue in British history. Several crucial questions can be identified: first, how similar or dissimilar was Britain, to other European countries in respect of its economy and political culture?; secondly, how far can similarity and difference be understood in terms of convergence and divergence, or of roughly parallel tracks reflecting and sustaining longstanding differences?; thirdly, did British people feel themselves to be Europeans?; fourthly did the British people take an informed and sympathetic interest in what was happening on the Continent, or did their ignorance of Europe lead to insularity and xenophobia?; and fifthly, to what extent was the British stage, and Britain as a whole involved in the affairs of Europe, diplomatically, militarily, economically, culturally? This wide-ranging, thoughtful and provocative study tackles these questions from the late Iron Age to the current debate about European integration. It is at once an important contribution to British history and a crucial work for those seeking to understand Britain's past and present position in Europe.

This book was released on 2003-02-13 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume continues the publication of Professor Elton's collected papers on topics in the history of Tudor and Stuart England. All appeared between 1973 and 1981. As before, they are reprinted exactly as originally published, with corrections and additions in footnotes. They include the author's four presidential addresses to the Royal Historical Society and bring together his preliminary findings in the history of Parliament and its records. Several of them, which appeared in various collections and Festschriften, have been difficult to find, and some are taken from locations in Germany and the United States unfamiliar to English readers. The eight lengthy reviews here republished examine some of the major questions in the history of the age and throw light on the principles of investigation which underlie the author's own research.

Book Toward an Understanding of Europe

Download or read book Toward an Understanding of Europe written by Alan W. Ertl and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the earnest student of Europe, this unique work brings together a basic review of essential segments of intellectual thinking. In this volume, pertinent conceptual relationships, substantial relevant particulars, and an array of specific mechanics are all intertwined and used as a focus to examine the ongoing complex European integration process. By defining important parameterizations, this text develops a paradigm probing the current-day international activities which are rapidly leading to meta-national European supra-nationality. The most basic substantive of the integration process is the collective various peoples of Europe with their individual diversities. The origins of these collective diversities, the defining historical nationhood precedent, is herein examined, revealing the essential elements of individual identities, ethnologies, linguistic collectivities, and other antecedents imputing elements which compose the substance and stuff today coalescing into tomorrow's future harmonized European identity. This book is unique as it traces from many different origins the elements that are merging Europe into one collective future. This book sketches a process of onward integration as a continuation of what has happened in the past. This argument is augmented with many time lines, definition martial, and historical presentation, making it easy for the reader to grasp straightforwardly the wide-ranging substance out of which a single whole is being constructed. As a cognitive dynamic, movements such as the Nordic League, European Union, and EFTA as well as many other entities have been noted-- movements each in their own way, all contributing to an overall integrated Europe. As the more prominent initiative, the European Union with its diverse and constituent parts is carefully presented, as well as its unique decision-making process which is working to focus singular interests into collective benefits. Integration is an inevitable byproduct of continentalization, itself a sub consideration of globalization. The time and perhaps the gestalt of the end result of this activity is not known; however, with a comprehensive overview the motion is clearly identifiable, and the direction unequivocally certain. The Single House of Europe is being built of very different elements. This book defines these elements in terms of a paradigm for understanding the process of integration, the process that is rapidly forming the new Single House of Europe.
