Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of every school day, it’s not an unfamiliar sight to see younger children bounding toward school, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to seize the day. In contrast, adolescents sometimes seem to sleepwalk toward their middle and high schools, often bleary-eyed, cantankerous, and less than enthusiastic to get down to work. Why the difference? Recent developmental research has demonstrated a relationship between sleep/wake patterns and different kinds of problem behaviors, including social adjustment problems, family coercion, and disaffection from school. Adolescents who prefer staying up later in the evening and arising late in the morning (i.e., eveningness) have often been considered at greater risk of suffering from such problem behaviors as delinquency and negative relationships with parents and teachers. Those who tend to go to bed and arise earlier (i.e., morningness) have long been associated with more positive outcomes. In the majority of previous research, however, these concepts have never been adequately tested. In Sync with Adolescence: The Role of Morningness-Eveningness in Development examines the possible effects of adolescent preferences on problem behavior in different contexts. This volume presents a new way of looking at morningness-eveningness in relation to adolescent development in general and on problem behavior in particular. The study has produced results, the implications of which necessitate a reinterpretation of the current thinking about morningness-eveningness and adolescent adjustment. This volume should be of particular interest to developmental psychologists and researchers who are interested in examining the role of biological factors in psychological processes as well as to sleep researchers who are interested in both the clinical and behavioral aspects. In addition, it is a valuable resource for clinical child and school psychologists, medical staff, teachers, and anyone who works with adolescents.

Book Social and Emotional Adjustment and Family Relations in Ethnic Minority Families

Download or read book Social and Emotional Adjustment and Family Relations in Ethnic Minority Families written by Ronald D. Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays addresses issues related to the intersection of family relationships and several contexts for the social and emotional development of ethnic minority adolescents. The papers are organized in sections under subtitles which reflect three contextual frames through which these issues may be examined. The first section focuses on the relationship between economic factors and resources on the one hand and family relations as environments for development on the other. The next part focuses on family and peer networks and relations as contexts for the emotional and social development of adolescents. The last section takes neighborhood and school as contexts for and determinants of social and emotional adjustment in adolescence. Like much of the extant work and current thought concerning development in ethnic minority children and adolescents, the authors have highlighted the more stressful and negative aspects of these several contexts. There are a few explicit and several implicit references made to supportive and more positive contexts and manifestations of relationships which frame the developmental experiences of ethnic minority adolescents. These serve as a reminder that many ethnic minority adolescents do overcome the odds against success and grow into healthy and wholesome adults. However, in large measure, this book is a contribution to our understanding of the problematic circumstances under which a significant segment of the population exists, reminding us that life for ethnic minority adolescents is difficult. The fact that some of these young people manage to overcome the negative and stressful aspects of their experiences and defy the implicit prediction of failure to thrive is truly remarkable.

Book Role of teachers and parents in social adjustment of children with learning disabilities

Download or read book Role of teachers and parents in social adjustment of children with learning disabilities written by Dr. Deepti Gupta and published by Blue Rose Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of teachers and parents is important for children with learning disabilities in their social adjustment. Children with learning disabilities learn social skills in social settings. Good adjustment leads to positive outcomes in one’s life. In contrast, poor adjustment leads to problems in one’s life. It is essential to understand that childhood is a major part of every individual, and children who receive a good atmosphere to learn social skills can better adjust to society, while children who are unable to receive an environment that would encourage social learning and adjustment find it hard to adjust socially.

Book Adolescent adjustment problems and school counselling services as percieved by adolecents educators and parents

Download or read book Adolescent adjustment problems and school counselling services as percieved by adolecents educators and parents written by Jagjiwan Kaur and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Sociology - Children and Youth, grade: A, Panjab University (Government Home Science College, Chandigarh, India), course: Masters in Child Development, language: English, abstract: The present study was designed to investigate adolescent adjustment problems and school counselling services as perceived by adolescents, educators and parents. The objectives of the study were: (1) to gain an insight into perception of adolescents, educators and parents regarding adjustment problems of adolescents in various domains, (2) to gauge the views of educators, parents and adolescents regarding need and importance of counselling services in schools, (3) to understand the views of educators, parents and adolescents related to various aspects of implementation of school counselling services. The results obtained from both the responses on the Student problem checklist and on the questionnaires indicated similar perception of adjustment problems. The study revealed that school going adolescents perceived low adjustment in the domains of studies, occupation and health. All the respondents emphasized on the need of counselling for the school going adolescents. However, very few had actually approached any professional ever for counselling and were not very clear about the role of counselors in schools. The results also revealed that adolescents and parents preferred approaching teachers rather than the professional counselors for help. The teachers perceived themselves as able and as competent as the counselors in handling adolescent problems, although at times they reported having difficulty in dealing with certain specific problems. The results highlighted the need to orient and educate the adolescents, teachers and parents on the need for counselling. Regular in-service training and workshops were asked for by the teachers, to develop and enhance their counselling skills.
