Book Revisiting Moroccan Migrations

Download or read book Revisiting Moroccan Migrations written by Mohammed Berriane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the 20th century, Morocco has become one of the world’s major emigration countries. But since 2000, growing immigration and settlement of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and Europe confronts Morocco with an entirely new set of social, cultural, political and legal issues. This book explores how continued emigration and increasing immigration is transforming contemporary Moroccan society, with a particular emphasis on the way the Moroccan state is dealing with shifting migratory realities. The authors of this collective volume embark on a dialogue between theory and empirical research, showcasing how contemporary migration theories help understanding recent trends in Moroccan migration, and, vice-versa, how the specific Moroccan case enriches migration theory. This perspective helps to overcome the still predominant Western-centric research view that artificially divide the world into ‘receiving’ and ‘sending’ countries and largely disregards the dynamics of and experiences with migration in countries in the Global South. This book was previously published as a special issue of The Journal of North African Studies.

Book Tafilet

  • Release : 1895
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 430 pages

Download or read book Tafilet written by Walter Harris and published by . This book was released on 1895 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1895, this book recounts the author's 1893 expedition to the Tafilet oasis in Morocco, one of the largest oases in the world. Previously largely inaccessible (before the invention of the motor car it was at least 10 days' journey south of Fez across the Atlas mountains and the Sahara), Harris took advantage of the Sultan of Morocco Mulai el Hassen's decision to pay a visit to the oasis during the autumn of that year. Throughout the book the author describes in great detail the places he visited and the people he met along the way. There are detailed descriptions of Marrakesh and the villages of the Atlas Mountains, as well as ruminations on the differences between the Arabs and the Berber tribes, and the situation of the Jews. Crossing the desert, Harris reached the Sultan's camp at the edge of the oasis, and there follows a detailed description of the activities of the Sultan and his retinue, their dealings with the troublesome tribes of the area, and accounts of the history, geography and people of Tafilet. The book concludes with the author's return journey to the north, and an account of the events following the Sultan's own return from the oasis and his subsequent death. Painting as it does a vivid picture of the state of Morocco at the very end of the 19th century, Walter B. Harris's Tafilet is sure to be of great interest to all those fascinated by the history of this unique and diverse North African country.

Book Fertile Crossings

Download or read book Fertile Crossings written by Pietro Deandrea and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2002 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In retracing some of the routes followed by West African literature in English over the course of the last three decades, this book employs an original multidimensional approach whereby the three main genres - narrative, poetry and drama - are considered in the light of their intricate web of fecund rapport and mutual influence. Authors such as Tutuola, Armah, Aidoo and Awoonor translated the fluid structures of orality into written prose, and consequently infused their works with poetic and dramatic resonance, thereby challenging the canonical dominance of social realism and paving the way for the birth of West African magical realism in Laing, Okri and Cheney-Coker. Starting in the 1970s, poetry on stage has become a mainstream genre in Ghana, thanks to performances by Okai, Anyidoho and Acquah. Boundaries between literary theatre and other genres have undergone a similar dissolution in the affirmation of the concept of 'total art' from Efua Sutherland to ben Abdallah, Osofisan and others. Fertile Crossings offers a study of these topics from various viewpoints, blending in-depth textual analysis with reflections on the political import of the works in question within the context of the present state of African societies, all supported by interviews with most of the authors.

Book Coleridge and Contemplation

Download or read book Coleridge and Contemplation written by Peter Cheyne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coleridge and Contemplation is a multi-disciplinary volume on Samuel Taylor Coleridge, founding poet of British Romanticism, critic, and author of philosophical, political, and theological works. In his philosophical writings, Coleridge developed his thinking about the symbolizing imagination, a precursor to contemplation, into a theory of contemplation itself, which for him occurs in its purest form as a manifestation of 'Reason'. Coleridge is a particularly challenging figure because he was a thinker in process, and something of an omnimath, a Renaissance man of the Romantic era. The dynamic quality of his thinking, the 'dark fluxion' pursued but ultimately 'unfixable by thought', and his extensive range of interests make a philosophical yet also multi-disciplinary approach to Coleridge essential. This book is the first collection to feature philosophers and intellectual historians writing on Coleridge's philosophy. This volume opens up a neglected aspect of the work of Britain's greatest philosopher-poet--his analysis of contemplation, which he considered the highest of human mental powers. Philosophers including Roger Scruton, David E. Cooper, Michael McGhee, Andy Hamilton, and Peter Cheyne contribute original essays on the philosophical, literary, and political implications of Coleridge's views. The volume is edited and introduced by Peter Cheyne, and Baroness Mary Warnock contributes a foreword. The chapters by philosophers are supported by new developments in philosophically minded criticism from leading Coleridge scholars in English departments, including Jim Mays, Kathleen Wheeler, and James Engell. They approach Coleridge as an energetic yet contemplative thinker concerned with the intuition of ideas and the processes of cultivation in self and society. Other chapters, from intellectual historians and theologians, including Douglas Hedley, clarify the historical background, and 'religious musings', of Coleridge's thought regarding contemplation.
