This book was released on 1999 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to state, local, and federal agency environmental and maintenance administrators, directors, supervisors, engineers, and scientists. The synthesis documents relevant background and recent information with regard to management practices that can help protect, preserve, or enhance the environment while at the same time allow road maintenance organizations to carry out their fundamental mission of maintenance and repair in a cost-effective manner. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian state and local transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search using domestic sources. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes BMPs consisting of broad management approaches applicable to the entire maintenance program or to more than one program area. In addition, BMPs for specific maintenance activities or groups of maintenance activities are included. Finally, BMPs concerning specific environmental issues are discussed.

Download or read book GO GREEN AT HOME written by Frank Y. Panol, Ph.D. and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central idea of this book is that saving energy and water saves the households money and simultaneously help reduce greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming. It also aims to give readers better understanding of the green concept to enable informed participation in the current discourse pertaining to environment and climate change. The first chapter reviews environmental issues confronting the world in general and the U.S. in particular. Chapter 2 discusses federal energy efficiency programs that relate directly with energy saving and resource conservation efforts in households. Chapter 3 focuses on measures of saving energy at home including use of compact fluorescent lamps, taking advantage of residual heat in electric stoves, energy-efficient ways of using kitchen appliances, informed choice and use of home heating and cooling systems and others. Chapter 4 deals with conserving water inside and outside homes including use of high-efficiency toilets, low -low shower heads, etc. The economics of energy and water use efficiency, covered in Chapter 5, quantifies the savings derived from most of the measures discussed in Chapters 3 and 4. The goal is to show in dollar terms how much households could save by following green practices at home. The challenges of dealing with solid waste from households are examined in Chapter 6. Particular focus is given on “Pay-As-You-Throw” (PAYT) scheme in waste collection systems and fees as well as the three Rs in waste management – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Recognizing the impact of children on energy and water use at home, the author devotes Chapter 7 on educating and engaging children in green practices. Two framework proposals aimed at enhancing sustainability of green movement in the country are presented in Chapter 8 including establishment of green camps and providing tax incentives for going green at home. Proposal for establishing green camps is directed to private business sector or non-profit organizations and the government while the tax incentive proposal is directed solely to the government.

Book Statistical Record of the Environment

Download or read book Statistical Record of the Environment written by Arsen Darnay and published by Gale Research International, Limited. This book was released on 1992 with total page 930 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SRE covers a wide range of environment conditions, facts, and issues from a statistical point of vantage. The major categories (air and water pollution, solid waste generation and management, hazardous wastes and toxic substances) are covered from various perspectives. SRE also assembles information on special problems and wastes (oil spills, global warming, soil erosion), provides profiles of the pollution control industry and legislation, and presents background information of the sort required to place environmental information into a broader context. Thus SRE shows a good deal of data on industrial production in sectors that are major polluters, presents cost and budgetary information, trends in consumption, public opinion, and the like. parag Most of the materials included deal with the environment in North America. Certain subjects, however, such as oil spills and global warming, have an international focus.
