Book The Tunnel of Love

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter De Vries
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2014-11-17
  • ISBN : 022617350X
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book The Tunnel of Love written by Peter De Vries and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-11-17 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comic novel of ambition and infidelity in the suburbs by “the funniest serious writer to be found either side of the Atlantic” (Kinglsey Amis). Harking from the golden age of fiction that skewered the middle-class American dream—the school of John Updike and John Cheever—this novel by the author of Slouching Towards Kalamazoo looks with laughter upon the lawns, cocktails, and creature comforts of suburbia, as well as the antics and anxieties that lurk just beneath its manicured facade. De Vries’s classic situation comedy The Tunnel of Love follows the interactions of a socially insecure, pun-loving family man, an officious lady caseworker from an adoption agency, and a chauvinist pig—all of whom are neighbors who know far too much about one another’s private lives. In this farcical tale of marital quibbles, De Vries employs his verbal fluidity and singular gift for wordplay to offer readers “his Scarlet Letter, in which adultery leads not to a consciousness of sin and repentance but to a neurotic guilt and the delicious enjoyment it affords” (D.G. Myers, from the introduction).

That’s definitely me, Zelda Gordon. I don’t care if the world calls me plus-sized, and I’ve learned to stop caring if my sister calls me flawed. Because I’m about to call those sexy, loving fellas, Drew and Aithan, my husbands. When I look in the mirror, I finally see the beautiful woman my men love. We’ve survived a hellish year, and we're on track for happiness. Until greed slithers from the dark corners of Drew's past, and pride tries to drive a wedge between Aithan and me. That monster, Spite, brought along its wicked cousins, Avarice and Scorn. They're crafting thinly veiled threats, but our unconventional family is ready to tear them apart. Because nothing will stand in our way. Nothing will ruin our happiness. Nothing. But, if you love curvy girl, chronic illness romance with a why choose relationship and two cinnamon roll heroes who are all about her happiness, then this series is calling your name.

  • Author : Joseph J. Darowski
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2019-07-02
  • ISBN : 1538113880
  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book Cheers written by Joseph J. Darowski and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating look at one of the greatest shows of all time. For eleven seasons, Cheers was a critically acclaimed program, ultimately earning more than 100 Emmy nominations and securing 28 wins, including 4 for best comedy series. One of the most popular shows of all time, the series centered on a group of Boston, Massachusetts locals who gathered to drink and socialize. Bar owner Sam Malone was the de facto leader of the group and boss to Carla Tortelli, Coach Ernie Pantuso, Woody Boyd, and Diane Chambers, Sam’s on-again, off again paramour. Regular patrons Norm Peterson and Cliff Claven completed this ersatz family, later joined by Frasier Crane; his wife Lilith; and Rebecca Howe, a new foil for Sam. Cheers not only provided laughs, it revolutionized American sitcoms with its long-running stories and famous will-they-won’t-they relationship of Sam and Diane. In Cheers: A Cultural History, Joseph J. Darowski and Kate Darowski offer an engaging analysis of the show, providing insights into both the onscreen stories and the efforts behind the scenes to shape this beloved classic. The authors examine the series as a whole but also focus on the show’s key characters, narrative arcs, and many themes, ranging from alcoholism to adultery. This volume also provides close looks at how set design, class issues, and gender roles informed the series throughout its run. Also included is an opinionated compendium of every episode, highlighting the peaks and dips in quality across more than a decade of television. Cheers: A Cultural History will appeal to the show’s many fans and bring back beloved memories of the place where everybody knows your name.

Book The Lives of Ingolf Dahl

Download or read book The Lives of Ingolf Dahl written by Anthony Linick and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-09-17 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was considered a musician’s musician, the most gifted artist in that exciting Southern California world dominated by the great emigré composers, the film industry, the brilliant soloists and the avant-gardists who made Los Angeles a musical capital. Ingolf Dahl (1912-1970) was an accomplished composer, conductor, pianist and a mentor to eminent contemporary figures like Michael Tilson Thomas – yet he never achieved the celebrity which others felt he deserved. He was not the man his public knew, a happily married gentile of Swedish extraction. His thirty-year marriage to Etta, one that seemed the epitome of mutual love and devotion, was beset by insoluble problems of identity – for Dahl was a closeted homosexual. He was also a German whose father was a Jew, and his name was not even Ingolf Dahl. His decision to disguise all of these truths, even from members of his own family, lead to fatal distortions in his creative being and public persona. Although he numbered many famous figures among his friends, from Gracie Fields to Igor Stravinsky and Benny Goodman, Dahl always experienced life as an outsider. When he died he left behind an extensive body of correspondence and 42 years worth of intimate daily journals. Etta Dahl (1905-1970) left many written records as well. These sources, never made public before, and the recollections of many survivors, give us a portrait of an intriguingly complex character, noble and self-absorbed, creative and crankish, passionate and repressed. The Lives of Ingolf Dahl has one other unique source, the author himself. Anthony Linick was the child of this famous marriage, the son whose very existence contributed to the elaborate deformations of fact and persona that so disfi gured Dahl’s life. With love and respect – and the historian’s devotion to the truth – he can tell their whole story at last.
