Book Who Says

Download or read book Who Says written by William DeGenaro and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2007-01-21 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Who Says?, scholars of rhetoric, composition, and communications seek to revise the elitist "rhetorical tradition" by analyzing diverse topics such as settlement house movements and hip-hop culture to uncover how communities use discourse to construct working-class identity. The contributors examine the language of workers at a concrete pour, depictions of long-haul truckers, a comic book series published by the CIO, the transgressive "fat" bodies of Roseanne and Anna Nicole Smith, and even reality television to provide rich insights into working-class rhetorics. The chapters identify working-class tropes and discursive strategies, and connect working-class identity to issues of race, gender, and sexuality. Using a variety of approaches including ethnography, research in historic archives, and analysis of case studies, Who Says? assembles an original and comprehensive collection that is accessible to both students and scholars of class studies and rhetoric.

Download or read book Hick Flicks written by Scott Von Doviak and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the pimps and players of blaxploitation movies dominated inner-city theaters, good old boys with muscle under their hoods and moonshine in their trunks roared onto drive-in screens throughout rural America. The popularity of these "hick flicks" grew throughout the '70s, and they attained mass acceptance with the 1977 release of Smokey and the Bandit. It marked the heyday of these regional favorites, but within a few short years, changing economic realities within the movie business and the collapse of the drive-in market would effectively spell the end of the so-called hixploitation genre. This comprehensive study of the hixploitation genre is the first of its kind. Chapters are divided into three major topics. Part One deals with "good ol' boys," from redneck sheriffs, to moonshiners, to honky-tonk heroes and beyond. Part Two explores road movies, featuring back-road racers, truckers and everything in between. Part Three, "In the Woods," covers movies about all manner of beasts--some of them human--populating the swamps and woodlands of rural America. Film stills are included, and an afterword examines both the decline and metamorphosis of the genre. A filmography, bibliography and index accompany the text.

Book Serious Foolishness

Download or read book Serious Foolishness written by Angie Austin and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a really small town, but it had its own homegrown radio broadcaster. That was Larry, carrying his wooden pole with an empty tin can nailed on it (his "microphone"), a wooden chair (his "stage"), his guitar on his back, to the middle of town to "perform" daily for the locals. People would gather around to applaud and request songs, but all of Larry's songs were alike, yelling into that tin can. As far as the kids, for their entertainment, they had to create their own. Like driving their car on the train tracks, flying like the wind—until they met an oncoming train. And if the local sheriff got in their way, they just overpowered him and locked him up in his own jail overnight. After moving up north to train show horses, they discovered those northern cowboys had their own unique way of enduring that brutally cold weather: they would just get drunk and then fight with each other. They were gang fights, but all of them were friends. Great sport. Unless you were a native there, this seemed a bit odd to outsiders. So they moved down south, hoping for a friendlier and more acceptable way of living and got there in time to meet early integration head-on. Then they had to learn a new modified Geechee/Gullah language in order to communicate with their hired help. What they found was that as a rule, those Southerners overall were the most gracious, friendliest, lovable, and unique people of all. As far as the weather, though it was usually more reasonable, in one day alone, they could have monsoon-like rains, followed immediately by a metal-melting heat wave, and topped off with a heavy fog that swooped down over you like a massive wet blanket that made those winters up north seem mild.

It challenges the unchecked expansion of school fortification and questions the realized benefit of inter-agency collaboration during a sentinel event. This book offers an alternative to traumatizing simulations by providing clear options for improving school safety by the empirically-proven effective measures of leakage detection (preventive) and sensemaking (reactive). School of Errors restores the scientific method to school safety and clears a path through the media rhetoric fogging this vital topic.

Book Rose of Soweto The Dingaan Thobela Story

Download or read book Rose of Soweto The Dingaan Thobela Story written by Deon Potgieter and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many tales have been told of boxers who have risen up against the odds to achieve success in their lives. None, however, has been as dramatic and had such a profoundly inspirational influence on the people who shared the dream as the true life story of the man they call The Rose of Soweto. Dingaan Thobela, The Rose of Soweto, has been described as the most naturally talented boxer ever to come out of South Africa. Growing up in Chiawelo under the watchful eye of his grandmother, this is the story of how a skinny boy from Soweto overcame adversity to become one of the greatest boxers to lace up a pair of gloves. Starting his career as a raw 17-year-old with a passion for boxing, Dingaan Thobela would go on to become a two-time lightweight world champion by the age of 26. Fame and fortune followed, but the fairy tale that his life had become was not to last. After relinquishing his WBO title and losing his WBA title, he was to endure seven years of mixed fortunes and bitter disappointments until he found himself on the verge of being consigned to history books. Written off in the media and no longer able to make the weight to fight in the lightweight division, it looked as if The Rose of Soweto had no other option but to fade away quietly. His long-held dream of winning a third world title seemed an impossible one. Yet, Dingaan refused to give it up. He would not be denied. This is the story of how one man went about proving that no matter where you come from, no matter what your background and social standing you can triumph in the face of adversity. And then he proved it all over again. In doing so he would not only regain his crown as the champion of the people and once again be hailed as a unifying symbol in a racially divided nation, but he would also confirm his place alongside the greatest stars that boxing has ever produced.
