Book Comparison of Real time Smoke Particulate Monitors with a Federal Reference Method Sampler

Download or read book Comparison of Real time Smoke Particulate Monitors with a Federal Reference Method Sampler written by Mary Ann Davies and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents findings on the accuracy of real-time smoke particulate monitors when compared with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Federal Reference Method (FRM) gravimetric sampler. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, National Technology and Development Program (T&D), performed the last evaluation on real-time smoke particulate monitors during 2006. Since that time, the manufacturers have refined and upgraded many of the real-time smoke monitors T&D evaluated. The Forest Service Air Resource Management Program asked T&D to performa market search for new, portable, real-time smoke particulate monitors and provide an update on their accuracy when compared with an FRM gravimetric sampler. This paper provides information on the accuracy of Met One Instruments Inc., E-Samplers and E-BAMs and a TSI Inc., DustTrak DRX Aerosol Monitor 8533 when compared with an FRM sampler.

Book Laboratory Evaluation of Real time Smoke Particulate Monitors

Download or read book Laboratory Evaluation of Real time Smoke Particulate Monitors written by Anthony Trent and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the results of tests of new instruments that can be used to measure the particulate concentrations from forest fire smoke in real time. These instruments use the optical properties of light passed through air samples or other properties of sampled air to estimate particulate levels in real time. The new instruments included two samplers by MetOne Instruments, Inc., the E-BAM and the E-Sampler, and one by MIE, an improved version of the DataRAM4 monitor. All the instruments being tested were mounted side-by-side alongside a Federal Reference Method gravimetric sampler that was the standard all machines were judged against. Gravimetric samplers capture particulate that can be weighed to determine particulate concentration. Smoke was generated by burning beds of white pine needles in the burn chamber of the USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station, Fire Sciences Laboratory in Missoula. The E-BAM samplers overestimated smoke particulate by 13 percent compared to the Federal Reference Method sampler, but the four E-BAM samplers, results were within 12 percent of each other. The E-Samplersgas results were similar to each other. The new MIE DataRAM4 monitor has a particulate-size correction feature that should be enabled for the most accurate results. The DataRAM4 monitor overestimated particulate concentrations by 172 percent, but the results of the two machines tested were within 11 percent of each other. Earlier studies (Laboratory Evaluation of Two Optical Instruments for Real-Time Particulate Monitoring, 9925-2806-MTDC, and Evaluation of Optical Instruments for Real-Time Continuous Monitoring of Smoke Particulates, 0025-2860-MTDC) tested older instruments in the laboratory. Results of field tests of older instruments are reported in Real-Time Smoke Particulate Sampling, Fire Storm 2000 (0125-2832-MTDC).

Book Smoking Prevention and Cessation

Download or read book Smoking Prevention and Cessation written by Giuseppe La Torre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tobacco smoking is considered the big killer and one of the most avoidable risk factors for many human pathologies. Reducing and controlling tobacco smoking should be a primary aim for a certain population, in order to reduce harms to health caused by this important risk factor, and it seems urgent to adopt intervention tools involved in responsibility fields such as health care, education, politics, economy and media. Among health professionals the prevalence of tobacco smoke is extremely high, more than other professional categories, and this could be partly attributed to a low weight that tobacco smoking has in the medical curriculum of future physicians, that will contribute in a determinant way to healthy choices of their patients. In order to realise that, the medical students need to be adequately trained with the aim of acquire competences and skills that help patients to prevent tobacco smoking and to increase smoking cessation, through a programme oriented to specific issue related to the potential harm of tobacco products. A survey conducted by Ferry et al. in the American Schools of Medicine underlined the lack of courses related to tobacco smoking. Moreover, a randomised trial carried out by Cummings et al., the Schools of Medicine result as the ideal setting to teach smoking cessation techniques to health professionals. The National Cancer Institute in 1992 recommended that primary and secondary prevention interventions on tobacco smoking will become mandatory in the curriculum of Medical USA students. However, until now this recommendation still is far from being fully implemented. The aim of the book is to give an overview on the epidemiology of tobacco smoking among different settings and populations, but with a special focus on health professionals and medicals students, and to show available examples of smoking prevention and cessation training in different settings.

Book Air Quality Monitoring Assessment and Management

Download or read book Air Quality Monitoring Assessment and Management written by Nicolas Mazzeo and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-07-08 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human beings need to breathe oxygen diluted in certain quantity of inert gas for living. In the atmosphere, there is a gas mixture of, mainly, oxygen and nitrogen, in appropriate proportions. However, the air also contains other gases, vapours and aerosols that humans incorporate when breathing and whose composition and concentration vary spatially. Some of these are physiologically inert. Air pollution has become a problem of major concern in the last few decades as it has caused negative effects on human health, nature and properties. This book presents the results of research studies carried out by international researchers in seventeen chapters which can be grouped into two main sections: a) air quality monitoring and b) air quality assessment and management, and serves as a source of material for all those involved in the field, whether as a student, scientific researcher, industrialist, consultant, or government agency with responsibility in this area.

Book Particulate Emissions from Vehicles

Download or read book Particulate Emissions from Vehicles written by Peter Eastwood and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public health risks posed by automotive particulate emissions are well known. Such particles are sufficiently small to reach the deepest regions of the lungs; and moreover act as carriers for many potentially toxic substances. Historically, diesel engines have been singled out in this regard, but recent research shows the need to consider particulate emissions from gasoline engines as well. Already implicated in more than one respiratory disease, the strongest evidence in recent times points to particle-mediated cardiovascular disorders (strokes and heart attacks). Accordingly, legislation limiting particulate emissions is becoming increasingly stringent, placing great pressure on the automotive industry to produce cleaner vehicles - pressure only heightened by the ever-increasing number of cars on our roads. Particulate Emissions from Vehicles addresses a field of increased international interest and research activity; discusses the impact of new legislation globally on the automotive industry; and explains new ways of measuring particle size, number and composition that are currently under development. The expert analysis and summary of the state-of-the-art, which encompasses the key areas of combustion performance, measurement techniques and toxicology, will appeal to R&D practitioners and engineers working in the automotive industry and related mechanical fields, as well as postgraduate students and researchers of engine technology, air pollution and life/ environmental science. The public health aspects will also appeal to the biomedical research community.
