Book excerpt: It only takes one great idea to change the lives of 3.4 billion people. That idea is the Smart Village. For people in many parts of the world, removing the barriers holding back their potential doesn't require massive investment in infrastructure; it often requires little more than spreading knowledge and information. When you design innovations the right way, they fuel scalable and sustainable transformation for the economy and environment. People's lives are dramatically changed for the better and forever. The rural villages become Smart Villages in the Smart Village Movement. These villages can very quickly become new realities that unlock undreamed of possibilities for the more than 3.4 billion people around the world. The Road to Mori is the beginning of this journey. Mori, India is the village in South India where Solomon Darwin was born an untouchable. The book follows Solomon as he comes to America and, with drive, perseverance and persistence, moves from his more than humble beginnings to success. First in the corporate world, and then academia as the Executive director of the Haas School of Innovation UC Berkeley. The book is a record of his thoughts about what the idea of a Smart Village, and how it could become a reality. The story chronicles his return to Mori, India -- where he was born an untouchable -- to transform it from a struggling rural community to the first Smart Village in the world. A village where the villager's lives and happiness have been dramatically improved in ways that were previously unimaginable. A village that has become a beacon of hope for struggling rural villages and the 3.4 billion people all over the world.

Download or read book Sustainable Smart Cities and Smart Villages Research written by Miltiadis D Lytras and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is ever more research on smart cities and new interdisciplinary approaches proposed on the study of smart cities. At the same time, problems pertinent to communities inhabiting rural areas are being addressed, as part of discussions in contigious fields of research, be it environmental studies, sociology, or agriculture. Even if rural areas and countryside communities have previously been a subject of concern for robust policy frameworks, such as the European Union's Cohesion Policy and Common Agricultural Policy Arguably, the concept of 'the village' has been largely absent in the debate. As a result, when advances in sophisticated information and communication technology (ICT) led to the emergence of a rich body of research on smart cities, the application and usability of ICT in the context of a village has remained underdiscussed in the literature. Against this backdrop, this volume delivers on four objectives. It delineates the conceptual boundaries of the concept of 'smart village'. It highlights in which ways 'smart village' is distinct from 'smart city'. It examines in which ways smart cities research can enrich smart villages research. It sheds light on the smart village research agenda as it unfolds in European and global contexts.]

Book Planning Housing and Infrastructure for Smart Villages

Download or read book Planning Housing and Infrastructure for Smart Villages written by Hemanta Doloi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some 7.3 billion people currently live on the planet. Of these, 3.4 billion live in rural areas. In just a few regions—Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa—less than 50 per cent of poverty is now located in rural areas. But for the rest of the world's regions between 55 per cent and 80 per cent of the poor continue to live in the countryside. Progress is being made, but much of the knowhow needed is not disseminated outside of a small coterie of professionals who work in the area. With urban development attracting a great deal of attention lately, poorer rural areas deserve the same and new knowledge for empowerment of rural communities is urgently needed. This book provides an overview of current thinking and practices that have emerged over the last thirty years for uplifting rural communities in developing economies. Drawing on a body of knowledge across a spectrum of relevant disciplines, this book provides a range of innovative ideas for rural planning, housing and infrastructure development. Governments in many emerging economies, where rural poverty is often most acute, have attempted to improve livelihoods. Approaches and techniques that have been used for urban development are often not applicable to rural communities. Studies show that money allocated for rural development is often not effectively spent due to distance, lack of infrastructure, lack of education, poverty and other factors. Meanwhile, the gap in development between the city and country continues to grow, sometimes leading to social and political instability, in both developing and developed countries. This book seeks to provide a guidebook for meeting such challenges. Through in-depth enquiry of global practices and thinking about rural development, and selected case studies, the authors argue that careful consideration must be given to incorporating issues of resilience, resourcefulness and the involvement of communities at grassroots levels in realising the transformation of rural settlements into Smart Villages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years ago one of America's most important public figures, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, chronicled her quest both deeply personal and, in the truest sense, public to help make our society into the kind of village that enables children to become able, caring resilient adults. IT TAKES A VILLAGE is a textbook for caring, filled with truths that are worth a read, and a reread. In her substantial new introduction, Senator Clinton reflects on how our village has changed over the last decade, from the internet to education, and on how her own understanding of children has deepened as she has watched Chelsea grow up and take on challenges new to her generation, from a first job to living through a terrorist attack. She discusses how the work she is doing in the Senate is helping children and looks at where America has been successful, improvements in the foster care system and support for adoption, and where there is still work to be done, providing pre-school programmes and universal health care to all our children. This new edition elucidates how the choices we make about how we raise our children, and how we support families, will determine how all nations will face the challenges of this century.
