Book Smart Helicopter Rotors

Download or read book Smart Helicopter Rotors written by Ranjan Ganguli and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploiting the properties of piezoelectric materials to minimize vibration in rotor-blade actuators, this book demonstrates the potential of smart helicopter rotors to achieve the smoothness of ride associated with jet-engined, fixed-wing aircraft. Vibration control is effected using the concepts of trailing-edge flaps and active-twist. The authors’ optimization-based approach shows the advantage of multiple trailing-edge flaps and algorithms for full-authority control of dual trailing-edge-flap actuators are presented. Hysteresis nonlinearity in piezoelectric stack actuators is highlighted and compensated by use of another algorithm. The idea of response surfaces provides for optimal placement of trailing-edge flaps. The concept of active twist involves the employment of piezoelectrically induced shear actuation in rotating beams. Shear is then demonstrated for a thin-walled aerofoil-section rotor blade under feedback-control vibration minimization. Active twist is shown to be significant in reducing vibration caused by dynamic stall. The exposition of ideas, materials and algorithms in this monograph is supported by extensive reporting of results from numerical simulations of smart helicopter rotors. This monograph will be a valuable source of reference for researchers and engineers with backgrounds in aerospace, mechanical and electrical engineering interested in smart materials and vibration control. Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Book A Study of the Thermal Effects in a Smart Structure Helicopter Rotor

Download or read book A Study of the Thermal Effects in a Smart Structure Helicopter Rotor written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One concept being considered for active noise and vibration control of helicopter rotors is a trailing edge flap design driven by a high-displacement piezoelectric actuator device. The proposed device requires an 800-V power supply and draws a current on the order of .3 A. Thus, depending on the duty cycle and efficiency of the mechanism, some portion of the 240 W of electrical input energy will be converted to heat. This study provides an initial estimate of the temperatures that may be encountered if no provisions are made for cooling the actuator. Also included are a discussion of the heat transfer calculation, assuming conduction and radiation as the dominant modes, and a description of HEAT 8, the computer code used.

Book Smart Helicopter Blade Using Piezoelectric Actuators for Both Cyclic and Collective Pitch Control

Download or read book Smart Helicopter Blade Using Piezoelectric Actuators for Both Cyclic and Collective Pitch Control written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work focuses on the design, construction and testing of a smart actuating system for the cyclic and collective control of helicopter blades for UAV applications. The actuating mechanism consists of a multilayered actuator made of PZT 5H layers bonded together on an aluminum substrate. The design of the actuator was performed using finite element techniques and introducing coupling mechanics in order to improve the simulation capabilities of the numerical tools. The construction and implementation of the smart actuation system are presented and finally static tests were performed (no blade rotation), mostly for the investigation of the cyclic pitch control. The actuation signal send to the piezoelectric actuator was in the frequency domain of 10-15 Hz, that covers the area of 700-750 rpm which is considered as the operational rotational velocity of the blade. The combination of velocity and radius of the rotor (1 m) impose severe loading to the actuator, however, the intelligent use of piezoelectric materials leads to functional structures that fulfill the design requirements.

Book Computational Fluid and Solid Mechanics

Download or read book Computational Fluid and Solid Mechanics written by K.J. Bathe and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-05-21 with total page 975 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MIT mission - "to bring together Industry and Academia and to nurture the next generation in computational mechanics is of great importance to reach the new level of mathematical modeling and numerical solution and to provide an exciting research environment for the next generation in computational mechanics." Mathematical modeling and numerical solution is today firmly established in science and engineering. Research conducted in almost all branches of scientific investigations and the design of systems in practically all disciplines of engineering can not be pursued effectively without, frequently, intensive analysis based on numerical computations. The world we live in has been classified by the human mind, for descriptive and analysis purposes, to consist of fluids and solids, continua and molecules; and the analyses of fluids and solids at the continuum and molecular scales have traditionally been pursued separately. Fundamentally, however, there are only molecules and particles for any material that interact on the microscopic and macroscopic scales. Therefore, to unify the analysis of physical systems and to reach a deeper understanding of the behavior of nature in scientific investigations, and of the behavior of designs in engineering endeavors, a new level of analysis is necessary. This new level of mathematical modeling and numerical solution does not merely involve the analysis of a single medium but must encompass the solution of multi-physics problems involving fluids, solids, and their interactions, involving multi-scale phenomena from the molecular to the macroscopic scales, and must include uncertainties in the given data and the solution results. Nature does not distinguish between fluids and solids and does not ever repeat itself exactly. This new level of analysis must also include, in engineering, the effective optimization of systems, and the modeling and analysis of complete life spans of engineering products, from design to fabrication, to possibly multiple repairs, to end of service.
