Book excerpt: Smart Energy Management for Households infers design-related insights and guidelines to improve the use and effectiveness of home energy management systems (HEMS) through an empirical evaluation of the longitudinal effectiveness of these devices and an exploration of factors that influence their use and effectiveness. Three case studies executed with three different HEMS in households, a life cycle assessment (LCA) on those three HEMS, as well as a reflection on the challenges of both researching and implementing HEMS in existing housing gave a comprehensive picture of the opportunities and barriers for HEMS. The research revealed five typical use patterns that emerged amongst households. It also revealed average energy savings of 7.8%, which however decreased in the follow-up that was conducted, and factors that may influence the use and effectiveness of HEMS. Nonetheless, the LCA cal culations divulged that the HEMS can achieve net energy savings when taking their embedded energy into account.

Book excerpt: With the growing energy consumption of residential homes and the emergence of time-of-use (TOU) and real-time electricity pricing, there is need for a system that will intelligently manage energy usage at the residential level. Such a system would automatically manage the use of onsite energy resources, such as photovoltaic (PV) arrays and battery storage, to reduce the home's grid energy consumption when the electricity price is high. This will yield savings for both the home owner and utility company. Additionally, this system would incorporate other data and interfaces such as weather data, home user preferences, load monitoring and management, communications with the utility company, and uninterruptible power during a grid outage. Current available systems do not provide such capabilities and require much user interface and control. Research has been done to design, develop, and evaluate a smart energy management system with such capabilities for a residential home. Certain design goals and requirements of the energy management system, named "Smart Green Power Node" (SGPN), were considered when choosing the overall topology. The hardware includes both low-voltage (LV) and high-voltage (HV) DC/DC converters, some of which are bidirectional, as well as a bidirectional grid-tied inverter. This hardware has been designed, built, and tested. The obtained results conclude that the hardware design meets the system's various requirements and illustrates recommended changes for future work. The system's design outlines challenges such as maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control and power flow control that are to be considered in future work.

Book excerpt: "With an ever-growing demand for energy, our increasing consumption is producing more greenhouse gases and other pollutants, impacting climate change. One approach to reducing residential energy consumption is through the use of smart energy management systems. However, automation from smart technology inherently removes a certain amount of control from the user. If loss of control is perceived as a loss of freedom, this may lead users to experience psychological reactance when using these products. A set of experiments was conducted to assess how three features of a message notification from smart home energy management systems may induce reactance in users. In the context of a hypothetical smart thermostat, the participants responded to message notifications. The phrasing of the notification was altered depending on the assigned strength of language, type of temperature change, and justification given by the smart thermostat. Reactance was measured after exposure to the notification. Results indicated more authoritative language, temperatures outside the user's comfort range, and a lack of justification from the thermostat had a significant effect on inducing reactance. Evidence suggested the presence of justification for the thermostat's operations may have caused users to be more likely to accept the thermostat's temperature change, even if that temperature was outside user preferences. This study has implications for designing smart home energy management systems to increase user acceptance and decrease potential frustrations"--Abstract, page iii.
