Book Once Upon a Small Town Time

Download or read book Once Upon a Small Town Time written by Louis Brodsky and published by Time Being Books. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the title of this collection suggests, the poems in Louis Daniel Brodsky's Once upon a Small-Town Time have a soothing sort of lullaby quality characteristic of bedtime tales. Conceived as a metaphoric road trip through three Midwestern towns and across a quarter century, the poems are steeped in an uplifting nostalgia, but without the cloying sentimentality. The observations are fond, even wistful, but never anything but fair and clear and unexaggerated in their effect.

Taking the fall for a crime she did not commit, her dream of a career in art is put on hold—until a mysterious visitor makes her an offer that will get her released from prison immediately. Alone in the world and in great need of work, she accepts. What happened to Anna Dale? Are the clues hidden in the decrepit mural? Can Morgan overcome her own demons to discover what exists beneath the layers of lies? “Chamberlain, a master storyteller, keeps readers hooked, with a story line that leavens history and social commentary with romance and mystery.”—Lexington Dispatch

Book The Big House in a Small Town

Download or read book The Big House in a Small Town written by Eric J. Williams and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is an in-depth, on-the-ground examination of how prisons impact rural communities, including a revealing study of two rural communities that have chosen prisons as an economic development strategy. A recent study by the Urban Institute estimates that one-third of all counties in the United States house a prison, and that our prison and jail population is now over 2.1 million. Another report indicates that more than 97 percent of all U.S. prisoners are eventually released, and communities are absorbing nearly 650,000 formerly incarcerated individuals each year. These figures are particularly alarming considering the fact that rural communities are using prisons as economic development vehicles without fully understanding the effects of these jails on the area. This book is the result of author Eric J. Williams' ground-level research about the effects of prisons upon two rural American communities that lobbied to host maximum security prisons. Through hundreds of interviews conducted while living in Florence, Colorado, and Beeville, Texas, Williams offers the perspective of local residents on all sides of the issue, as well as a social history told mainly from the standpoint of those who lobbied for the prisons.

Book Big Oil in Small Town America

Download or read book Big Oil in Small Town America written by Jaime L. Long and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book started as a result of four ordinary people seeing something wrong in their small tourist community and tried to right it. Who would have thought that our government would subject its own people to the damaging emissions of the oil and gas industry? This book is about the fight of four people fighting the oil companies and the Local, State and Federal governmental agencies charged with protecting its citizens. It is seen through the eyes of one of the group, who has had a stroke and contributed to the "fight" by sending out hundreds of email newsletters almost weekly. The fight to save a community's way of life was marred with disillusionment and frustration, but they continued to fight. In Lewiston and surrounding area there are roughly 5000 gas and oil wells along with their associated facilities. The particular offloading facility the group focused on was emitting illegal amounts of Hydrogen Sulfide and Sulfur Dioxide and no one was stopping them. Lewiston was downwind from this facility most days. The local, state and federal governments were fighting us. They threw up road blocks every way we turned as if they didn't want us to know what was really going on. Why? Because of the many lies that the group uncovered as to what was really happening at the facility. Local citizens were looking the other way. Others were calling us crazy or to just leave the problem alone! Did they have oil/gas wells on their property, possibly collecting royalties? The group has hundreds of pages of transcripts, videotapes and photographs to prove otherwise. The Citizens Against Environmental Destruction, as we came to call ourselves, were fighting an uphill battle, but battle we did and are continuing to do to save our lives and our community. Too many health problems. Too many deaths. Why? Read and hope this never happens to your community. The knowledge of how our government works to protect us (they don´t) was so disappointing.

Book excerpt: This book tells how the Second World War affected ordinary families, what actually happened when evacuees arrived in local homes and how they rallied to 'Dig for Victory', 'Salute the Soldier' or 'Hit the Nail in Hitler's Coffin'. It demonstrates just how much salvage one small town could produce, and makes the connection between Hatfield, Winston Churchill, Stalingrad and HMS Tweed. It gives a fascinating insight into how the war changed life at Hatfield House and the significance of developments at the de Havilland Aircraft Co., which made this particular small town a target for German bombers. Here is the Home Front 1939-45 in microcosm, full of the energy, determination, humour and courage of British men and women in wartime.
