Download or read book Profitability and Efficiency of Smallholder Dairying in Malawi written by Ted Nyekanyeka and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smallholder dairy farmers remain the main producers of milk supplied to the population in urban, peri-urban centres and milk industries in Malawi. However the dairy sub sector remains underdeveloped due to limited access to inputs, poor infrastructure, low value addition capacity and poor policies in promoting livestock and dairying business. This research focused on establishing the competitiveness of the farmers in the face of growing demand and competition using profit efficiency approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transaction cost economics approach argues that transactions do not occur in a frictionless environment. Transaction costs including information, contract and enforcement costs arise in market arrangements and influence market channel participation. Using Tobit limited dependent variable analysis, data from obtained from 158 smallholder farmers sampled from Lilongwe milkshed area, Malawi were used to determine the differences between transaction costs in the formal and informal marketing channel and examine the market channel choice determinants. Results showed that information costs proxied by quality inspection had a positive influence on informal milk marketing while payment delay, a proxy for negotiation costs had a negative influence and the fear of non-sale had a positive influence on informal milk marketing. Milk production had a positive influence on informal marketing. Information and negotiation costs were higher in the formal channel while the informal channel had higher monitoring costs.

Book Evaluation of the Productivity of Crossbred Dairy Cattle on Smallholder and Government Farms in the Republic of Malawi

Download or read book Evaluation of the Productivity of Crossbred Dairy Cattle on Smallholder and Government Farms in the Republic of Malawi written by Kwaku Agyemang and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The productive and reproductive performance of Friesian-'off-type' (Sussex x Brahman-type x Africander-cross) crossbred cattle on smallholdings in the Southern Region of Malawi was evaluated. The performance of Friesian-'off-type', Friesian-Malawi Zebu and pure-Friesian cattle on smallholdings and government stations was also evaluated. It was found that advanced age at first calving and long-calving intervals were common both on smallholdings and on government stations, which was believed to be due to inadequate levels of feeding. Feed resources have not increased with the introduction of improved breeds of cattle and larger herds, and improved and local cattle are kept under the same management conditions on smallholdings. Productivity of the cattle has been decreasing since 1979, possibly due to climate factors, but poor management was not ruled out. It was found that Friesian-Malawi Zebu crosses performed at the same level as the larger Friesian-'off-type' crosses, and the authors are believe that the use of the Malawi Zebu in producing crossbred cattle could lead to increased milk production, particularly in areas where feed is in short supply.

Book Smallholder farmer participation in modernization of a food system

Download or read book Smallholder farmer participation in modernization of a food system written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report explores whether farm assets determine the participation of smallholder dairy farmers in sales to Milk Collection Centres (MCC) and how their duration as MCC suppliers affects their accumulation of farm capital and technology. A survival analysis approach used constructed panel data for dairy farmers over a 12-year period. Participation in MCC value chains is found to be determined by location, training and cooperative membership, thus having a mixed effect on the inclusion of smallholder producers. Duration as an MCC supplier is correlated with accumulation of capital and changes in technology. The implications are that policy-makers need to facilitate smallholder farmers in engaging in collective action and accessing modern infrastructure.

Book Market information and access to structured markets by small farmers and traders Evidence from an action research experiment in central Malawi

Download or read book Market information and access to structured markets by small farmers and traders Evidence from an action research experiment in central Malawi written by Ochieng, Dennis O. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small farmers and traders often lack the market information they need to earn the most from their crop sales. This paper analyzes the effects of an action research experiment in central Malawi, in which four groups of smallholder farmers were provided with maize and soybean price information from a local commodity exchange during the 2019 marketing season, while four other groups of smallholder farmers did not receive this information. Using data from a panel survey of 399 farmers and 78 traders conducted before and after the main marketing season and using kernel propensity score matching approach to account for possible differences between the treated and non-treated farmers, we estimate the effects of the intervention on a number of outcome indicators. A before versus after analysis was also employed to evaluate changes in traders’ marketing outcomes. We find positive but statistically insignificant effects on maize and soybean selling prices, sales through structured markets and levels of commercialization after the intervention. We also find a negative and statistically significant effect on the quantity of maize sold by farmers, suggesting paradoxically that providing farmers with price information reduced their sales volumes. The proportion of traders aware of structured markets and their share of sales through structured markets also increased significantly after the intervention. The quantity of maize sold by traders as well as the selling prices for maize and soy-bean also increased significantly, although this may be due to factors other than the intervention. The study concludes that provision of price information alone is not enough to facilitate small farmers’ and traders’ use of structured markets. Greater effort is needed to sensitize farmers and traders on the quality and quantity requirements as well as the operations of structured markets.
