Book excerpt: Excerpt from Small Business Development in Indian Country: Hearing Before the Committee on Small Business, United States Senate, One Hundred Third Congress, First Session on Small Business Development in Indian Country Friday, September 3, 1993 Senator Pressler. I want to welcome you all here this morning. This is a hearing of the U.S. Senate Small Business Committee, and I want to thank all the witnesses and concerned citizens for participating in today's important field hearing. I am pleased to have the opportunity to bring this official Senate hearing to the Billy Mills Hall here in Pine Ridge. As you came in this morning, official testimony sheets were available at the registration table. I hope you will take time to write down your thoughts concerning economic development and job creation possibilities for Indians and non-Indians in areas on or near reservations and trust lands. Your written ideas will be made a part of the official hearing record of this Committee, just as the comments from today's panels will be. This hearing marks the first time that the Senate Small Business Committee has met on an Indian reservation. It is important that we are here today in Pine Ridge, home to one of South Dakota's six reservations and one of its nine tribes. Here in Pine Ridge, where 66 percent of all residents live in poverty, new and higher paying jobs must be created. Small business growth is the best way in which to accomplish job creation. More government is not the answer. The people who live in Pine Ridge know it; people all across South Dakota know it. Too often we turn to the government for answers. That's not where the solution to this problem lies. Small business is the answer. We must find ways to encourage small business growth. Today I am announcing that I will be working on two fronts to help achieve this goal. First, I intend to offer legislation to create a pilot Mentorship for American Indian Small Enterprise (MAISE) program, drawing from components similar to those contained in the Small Business Administration Microloan program. Book American Indian Business

Download or read book American Indian Business written by Deanna M. Kennedy and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Indian business is booming. The number of American Indian– and Alaska Native–owned businesses increased by 15.3 percent from 2007 to 2012—a time when the total number of US businesses increased by just 2 percent—and receipts grew from $34.4 million in 2002 to $8.8 billion in 2012. Despite this impressive growth, there is an absence of small businesses on reservations, and Native Americans own private businesses at the lowest rate per capita for any ethnic or racial group in the United States. Many Indigenous entrepreneurs face unique cultural and practical challenges in starting, locating, and operating a business, from a perceived lack of a culture of entrepreneurship and a suspicion of capitalism to the difficulty of borrowing start-up funds when real estate is held in trust and cannot be used as collateral. This book provides an accessible introduction to American Indian businesses, business practices, and business education. Its chapters cover the history of American Indian business from early trading posts to today’s casino boom; economic sustainability, self-determination, and sovereignty; organization and management; marketing; leadership; human resource management; tribal finance; business strategy and positioning; American Indian business law; tribal gaming operations; the importance of economic development and the challenges of economic leakage; entrepreneurship; technology and data management; business ethics; service management; taxation; accounting; and health-care management. American Indian Business also furthers the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives in the study of American business practices in general and demonstrates the significant impact that American Indians have had on business, as well as their cultural contributions to management, leadership, marketing, economic development, and entrepreneurship.

Book Reservation Capitalism

Download or read book Reservation Capitalism written by Robert J. Miller and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native American peoples suffer from health, educational, infrastructure, and social deficiencies of the sort that most Americans who live outside tribal lands are wholly unaware of and would not tolerate. Indians are the poorest people in the United States, and their reservations are appallingly poverty-stricken; not surprisingly, they suffer from the numerous social pathologies that invariably accompany such economic conditions. Historically, most tribal communities were prosperous, composed of healthy, vibrant societies sustained over hundreds and in some instances perhaps even thousands of years. By creating sustainable economic development on reservations, however, gradual long-term change can be effected, thereby improving the standard of living and sustaining tribal cultures. Reservation “Capitalism” relates the true history, describes present-day circumstances, and sketches the potential future of Indian communities and economics. It provides key background information on indigenous economic systems and property-rights regimes in what is now the United States and explains how the vast majority of Native lands and natural resource assets were lost. Robert J. Miller focuses on strategies for establishing public and private economic activities on reservations and for creating economies in which reservation inhabitants can be employed, live, and have access to the necessities of life, circumstances ultimately promoting complete tribal self-sufficiency.
