Book excerpt: This beautiful novel from the author of Marcelo in the Real World about life after a suicide attempt is perfect for fans of It's Kind of a Funny Story and Thirteen Reasons Why. But then she meets Mona, the live wire; Gabriel, the saint; E.M., always angry; and Dr. Desai, a quiet force. With stories and honesty, kindness and hard work, they push her to reconsider her life before Lakeview, and offer her an acceptance she's never had.But Vicky's newfound peace is as fragile as the roses that grow around the hospital. And when a crisis forces the group to split up, sending Vicky back to the life that drove her to suicide, she must try to find her own courage and strength. She may not have them. She doesn't know.Inspired in part by the author's own experience with depression, The Memory of Light is the rare young adult novel that focuses not on the events leading up to a suicide attempt, but the recovery from one -- about living when life doesn't seem worth it, and how we go on anyway.

Book excerpt: The witty, dramatic, and fiercely tender story of a Southern family whose prodigious charms are matched only by their propensity for tragedy “Miss Cade passing.” The letter arrives with little fanfare and fewer details, yet the meaning is clear: The Cade family of Covington, Louisiana, has cause to grieve once more. Called home from her first book tour, author Rory Cade boards a flight from New York to New Orleans. In the next seat, her brother-in-law and former lover Johnny Killelea, now a famous journalist, drinks Scotch and stirs up memories of events long past but never forgotten. As the plane flies south through stormy skies, Rory recalls her family’s turbulent history: her mother and stepmother’s early deaths; her brilliant and charismatic father’s descent into alcoholism; and the romances, heartbreaks, and secrets that shaped her own life and those of her two sisters. As the tumultuous events of the 1960s unfold, the Cades are pulled apart by their private demons of money, madness, and lust. Exquisitely crafted by one of the South’s finest storytellers, Slow Poison is the rich and evocative tale of this star-crossed family’s triumphs and misfortunes.

Book The Linguistic Worldview

Download or read book The Linguistic Worldview written by Adam Glaz and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: the book is concerned with the linguistic worldview broadly understood, but it focuses on one particular variant of the idea, its sources, extensions, its critical assessment, and inspirations for related research. This approach is the ethnolinguistic linguistic worldview (LWV) program pursued in Lublin, Poland, and initiated and headed by Jerzy Bartminski. In its basic design, the volume emerged from the theme of the conference held in Lublin in October 2011: "The linguistic worldview or linguistic views of worlds?" If the latter is the case, then what worlds? Is it a case of one language/one worldview? Are there literary or poetic worldviews? Are there auctorial worldviews? Many of the chapters are based on presentations from that conference, and others have been written especially for the volume. Generally, there are four kinds of contributions: (i) a presentation and exemplification of the "Lublin style" LWV approach; (ii) studies inspired by this approach but not following it in detail; (iii) independent but related and compatible research; and (iv) a critical reappraisal of some specific ideas proposed by Jerzy Bartminski and his collaborators.
