Book City Slicker s Guide to Country Living

Download or read book City Slicker s Guide to Country Living written by Becky Condon and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2017-07-01 with total page 956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neighbors: Persons living in proximity to other persons. Everyone has neighbors. Neighbors-From-Hell: Neighbors who are not nice. Have you ever had Neighbors-From-Hell? Neighbors are an obvious arrangement in cities or towns. Good or bad, tidy or messy, quiet or noisy, nice or mean; there are all types. City slickers moving to the country invoke the image of space and solitude, but there will still be neighbors. The space between domiciles might be larger, but a bad, messy, or noisome neighbor can still exist. Even with a country home's space and larger area, there can still be neighbors that won't contain themselves to their own area. Once upon a time there was a young family who had a dream of owning land and operating a farm. They became land owners and cattle ranchers, building their very own dream house on their very own patch of paradise. They worked hard to assimilate to this new lifestyle in a new neighborhood. It was everything they'd hoped for, and they were so happy. Then they got neighbors. They got Neighbors-From-Hell. These bad neighbors were pushy, arrogant, and mean. Their bad attitudes, slovenly habits, and meanness aside, the neighbors would not contain themselves to their own area. They encroached. They took what was not theirs. They forced themselves into the space and lives of our heroes. These neighbors meant to build their house on their property next door to our little family. The neighbors' property had some unfortunate attributes, however, and it became clear that their property wasn't very conducive to building a home. Astonishingly, these neighbors insisted on utilizing portions of property they didn't own to construct their project. There were other solutions to the construction dilemmas these neighbors faced, but these answers would have been costly. They wanted to use our little family's land for free. They wanted to steal the property and property rights of our little family. These Neighbors-From-Hell came on over bringing their messes and problems with them, and embroiled our little family in a battle for their rights and their very lives. When our heroes stood firm on their property rights, these awful neighbors tried it anyway. When the young couple complained, the neighbors lied. When the family sought the help of the authorities, they found out the difficulties of fighting city hall when the local power came to the aid and assistance of their county crony, even in the face of proven and documented lies. The common refrain used as their excuse for lies and deceit was, "Y'all aren't from around here, are you?" This bigotry and clannish attitude was brought to full force against our little family, whose only desire was to be left alone on their own land. When the neighbors couldn't steal the part of the land they were after, they tried to take everything. Using their friends in county authority and the local judiciary, they brought the fight of our young heroes' lives. Does the young family survive? Can they win against the local establishment and seemingly insurmountable odds? What do you do when your neighbors are the Neighbors-From-Hell? What do you do when the Neighbors-From-Hell have friends in high places? What do you do when they threaten your home, your livelihood, and your family? Everyone knows fighting city hall can be a pointless fight, rarely won. But what do you do when city hall brings the fight to you? Sometimes you have to stand and fight.

Book This Side of Paradise

  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 1996-03-01
  • ISBN : 9780140189766
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book This Side of Paradise written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1920, This Side of Paradise marks the beginning of the career of one of the greatest writers of the first half of the twentieth century. In this remarkable achievement, F. Scott Fitzgerald displays his unparalleled wit and keen social insight in his portrayal of college life through the struggles and doubts of Amory Blaine, a self-proclaimed genius with a love of knowledge and a penchant for the romantic. As Amory journeys into adulthood and leaves the aristocratic egotism of his youth behind, he becomes painfully aware of his lost innocence and the new sense of responsibility and regret that has taken its place. Clever and wonderfully written, This Side of Paradise is a fascinating novel about the changes of the Jazz Age and their effects on the individual. It is a complex portrait of a versatile mind in a restless generation that reveals rich ideas crucial to an understanding of the 1920s and timeless truths about the human need for--and fear of--change. "A very enlivening book indeed, a book really brilliant and glamorous, making as agreeable reading as could be asked . . . There are clever things, keen and searching things, amusingly young and mistaken things, beautiful things and pretty things . . . and truly inspired and elevated things, an astonishing abundance of each, in THIS SIDE OF PARADISE. You could call it the youthful Byronism that is normal in a man of the author's type, working out through a well-furnished intellect of unusual critical force." --The Evening Post, 1920 "An astonishing and refreshing book . . . Mr. Fitzgerald has recorded with a good deal of felicity and a disarming frankness the adventures and developments of a curious and fortunate American youth. . . . [It is] delightful and encouraging to find a novel which gives us in the accurate terms of intellectual honesty a reflection of American undergraduate life. At last the revelation has come. We have the constant young American occupation--the 'petting party'--frankly and humorously in our literature." --The New Republic, 1920

Book The Baha Mousa Public Inquiry report

Download or read book The Baha Mousa Public Inquiry report written by Baha Mousa Public Inquiry and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terms of reference for this inquiry were to investigate and report on the circumstances surrounding the death of Baha Mousa and the treatment of those detained with him. It takes account of previous investigations that have already taken place, in particular where responsibility lay for approving the practice of conditioning detainees by any members of the 1st Battalion, The Queen's Lancashire Regiment in Iraq in 2003.The report is divided into four modules: the history of the use of conditioning techniques (from the time of internment in Northern Ireland in the early 1970s up to and including March 2003; Baha Mousa and other detainees; training and the chain of command; the future - what has happened since 2003 is considered in relation to conditioning techniques.Baha Mousa died with 93 injuries in custody in Basra in 2003. His relatives claim he was beaten to death by troops. The inquiry concluded that his death was caused by a combination of his weakened physical state and a final struggle with his guards. The Inquiry has criticised the conduct of individual soldiers, senior army officers and their legal advisers and also failures in the chain of command. The lack of training and preparation British troops received for the invasion of Iraq is also highlighted. The report found that systematic abuse of civilians by British troops did not happen. There are 64 recommendations to the Ministry of Defence including that the MoD should keep its current absolute prohibition on the use of hoods on captured personnel. Arguments for the ban are overwhelming and a return to their use is difficult to justify

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Side of Paradise chronicles the coming of age of Amory Blaine, born to a wealthy midwestern family. It begins with Amory as a spoiled youth, doted on by his eccentric mother Beatrice. It follows him as he attends preparatory school and Princeton, and then briefly attempts but quickly abandons at a career in advertising. His service in World War I is mentioned but mostly glossed over. Covered in much more detail are his various romances: youthful dalliances, a correspondence-based relationship that ends as soon as the couple spends time together in person, a deep love with the debutante sister of one of his close friends, and an intense summer fling. The book shows Amory’s attempts to define himself as a person and find his place in a world rapidly changing through World War, the “Jazz Age,” and Prohibition. It provides the reader with a good picture of what life was like for a privileged young man of the era. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s first novel, This Side of Paradise was published in 1920 when he was 23 years old, and was widely praised by critics. The semi-autobiographical work launched his career as one of America’s most well-known writers. As a direct result of the publishing of the novel, Zelda Sayre (the inspiration for the character of the debutante Rosalind Connage) agreed to marry Fitzgerald. The couple became an icon of the excesses of the Jazz Age. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
