They allow the reader to see the lighter side of the Trump presidency. Slain 2 is much longer than Slain 1, includes pictures, and expands from limericks into many other poetic styles, including many styles adapted from children's nonsense poetry: an alphabet poem, a sonnet, a song, You Are Old Father William poems, double dactyls, and bredliks. The book also strongly supports the MeToo movement by attacking harassers in humorous verse.

Book The Dramatic Monologue

Download or read book The Dramatic Monologue written by Elisabeth A. Howe and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Dramatic Monologue, Elisabeth A. Howe defines the characteristics of the subject as a genre, clearly differentiating it from the lyric poem. One feature she discusses is the double voice of the dramatic monologue - the reader hears simultaneously the voices of the poet and the speaker. This dialogical effect distinguishes the dramatic monologue both from lyric poetry and from narrative poems written in the first person. The use of a persona allows the poet to distance himself or herself from the poem. Howe investigates the origins of the dramatic monologue before examining poems by Browning and Tennyson, both masters of the form and both largely responsible for its popularity with late-nineteenth-century readers and poets. She offers close readings of Browning's "The Bishop Orders His Tomb at Saint Praxed's Church" and Tennyson's "Tithonus". Later chapters include detailed analyses of dramatic monologues by twentieth-century poets, including Ezra Pound's "Marvoil", T.S. Eliot's "Portrait of a Lady", and poems by Robert Frost, Randall Jarrell, and the contemporary poet Richard Howard.

Book Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere

Download or read book Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere written by John Vigor and published by . This book was released on 1999-08 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Vigor turns the spotlight on twenty seaworthy sailboats that are at home on the ocean in all weather. These are old fiberglass boats, mostly of traditional design and strong construction. All are small, from 20 feet to 32 feet overall, but all have crossed oceans, and all are cheap. Choosing the right boat to take you across an ocean or around the world can be confusing and exasperating, particularly with a tight budget. Vigor sets out to remedy that in this book. He compares the designs and handling characteristics of 20 different boats whose secondhand market prices start at about $3,000. Interviews with experienced owners (featuring valuable tips about handling each boat in heavy weather) are interspersed with line drawings of hulls, sail plans, and accommodations. Vigor has unearthed the known weaknesses of each boat and explains how to deal with them. He rates their comparative seaworthiness, their speed, and the number of people they can carry in comfort. If you have ever dreamed the dream this book can help you turn it into reality.

Book excerpt: “[A] lively biography of Chartres Cathedral . . . Ball’s account of its construction reveals fascinating details.” —The New Yorker Chartres Cathedral, south of Paris, is revered as one of the most beautiful and profound works of art in the Western canon. But what did it mean to those who constructed it in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries—and why was it built at such immense height and with such glorious play of light, in the soaring manner we now call Gothic? In this work, Aventis Prize winner and National Book Critics Circle Award finalist Philip Ball makes sense of the visual and emotional power of Chartres and brilliantly explores how its construction—and the creation of other Gothic cathedrals—represented a profound and dramatic shift in the way medieval thinkers perceived their relationship with their world. Beautifully illustrated, filled with astonishing insight, Universe of Stone embeds the magnificent cathedral in the culture of the twelfth century—its schools of philosophy and science, its trades and technologies, its politics and religious debates—enabling us to view this ancient architectural marvel with fresh eyes. “A terrific book . . . a lucid, thoughtful tour de force.” —The Christian Science Monitor “Engrossing . . . a resplendent account of the mysteries of Chartres Cathedral.” —Sunday Times “There is no better introduction to the subject.” —The Wall Street Journal

Book Bread Wine and Money

  • Author : Jane Welch Williams
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 1993-06
  • ISBN : 9780226899138
  • Pages : 400 pages

Download or read book Bread Wine and Money written by Jane Welch Williams and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1993-06 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At Chartres Cathedral, for the first time in medieval art, the lowest register of stained-glass windows depicts working artisans and merchants instead of noble and clerical donors. Jane Welch Williams challenges the prevailing view that pious town tradesmen donated these windows. In Bread, Wine, and Money, she uncovers a deep antagonism between the trades and the cathedral clergy in Chartres; the windows, she argues, portray not town tradesmen but trusted individuals that the fearful clergy had taken into the cloister as their own serfs. Williams weaves a tight net of historical circumstances, iconographic traditions, exegetical implications, political motivations, and liturgical functions to explain the imagery in the windows of the trades. Her account of changing social relationships in thirteenth-century Chartres focuses on the bakers, tavern keepers, and money changers whose bread, wine, and money were used as means of exchange, tithing, and offering throughout medieval society. Drawing on a wide variety of original documents and scholarly work, this book makes important new contributions to our knowledge of one of the great monuments of Western culture.
