Book Summary of Sky Brightness Measurements During Eclipses of the Sun

Download or read book Summary of Sky Brightness Measurements During Eclipses of the Sun written by William E. Sharp and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A selected group of measurements of the sky brightness during total solar eclipse is used to determine a standard light curve during the period from no obscuration to totality. It is found that the sky light may be considered as attenuated sunlight up to at least 99.8% obscuration. During totality, the sky light consists of multiply scattered light from outside the umbral region. The effects of solar elevation angle, cloud cover, and albedo and the variability of the light curve during totality are discussed.

Book Sky Brightness During Eclipses

Download or read book Sky Brightness During Eclipses written by Samuel M. Silverman and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photometric data the provide good quantitative information on the sky brightness during eclipses are surprisingly few in number. The general characteristics of brightness can, however, be determined from these data. The authors tentatively conclude that, for the darker eclipses at least, the darkness is correlated with the solar radiation intensity and thus presumably with the amount of dust in the atmosphere. The result is reasonable since the umbral sky brightness is due to scattered light that has originated at some distance form the umbra and will therefore be strongly attenuated by dust along the intervening path. In the period from 1883 to 1918 volcanic eruptions in 1883, 1902, and 1912 produced significant quantities of atmospheric dust and reductions in the solar radiation intensity in the northern hemisphere.

Book excerpt: Much of what is known about the universe came from the study of celestial shadows. This book looks in detail at the way eclipses and other celestial shadows have given us amazing insights into the nature of the objects in our solar system and how they are even helping us discover and analyze planets that orbit stars other than our Sun. A variety of eclipses, transits, and occultations of the mooons of Jupiter and Saturn, Pluto and its satellite Charon, asteroids and stars have helped astronomers to work out their dimensions, structures, and shapes - even the existence of atmospheres and structures of exoplanets. Long before Columbus set out to reach the Far East by sailing West, the curved shadow of the Earth on the Moon during a lunar eclipse revealed that we inhabit a round world, a globe. More recently, comparisons of the sunlit and Earthlit parts of the Moon have been used to determine changes in the Earth's brightness as a way of monitoring possible effects in cloud coverage which may be related to global warming. Shadows were used by the Greek mathematician Eratosthenes to work out the first estimate of the circumference of the Earth, by Galileo to measure the heights of the lunar mountains and by eighteenth century astronomers to determine the scale of the Solar System itself. Some of the rarest and most wonderful shadows of all are those cast onto Earth by the lovely "Evening Star" Venus as it goes between the Earth and the Sun. These majestic transits of Venus occur at most two in a century; after the 2012 transit, there is not a chance to observe this phenomenon until 2117, while the more common sweep of a total solar eclipse creates one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring events of nature. Though it may have once been a source of consternation or dread, solar eclipses now lead thousands of amateur astronomers and "eclipse-chasers" to travel the globe in order to experience the dramatic view under "totality." These phenomena are among the most spectacular available to observers and are given their full due in Westfall and Sheehan's comprehensive study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eclipse occurs when one celestial body such as a moon or planet moves into the shadow of another celestial body, or when one celestial body passes between two celestial bodies. This book explains the different types of eclipses, why eclipses are important astronomical phenomena to study, and the scientific history of studying eclipses. A graphic organizer presents information and helps readers understand complex topics, while primary sources in the form of historic images grab readers' attention.

Book Journey Through Eclipses

Download or read book Journey Through Eclipses written by Carolyn L. Hill and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most beautiful natural phenomena we can see here on Earth is that of solar and lunar eclipses. Through perfect orbital timing, these events can cause the Sun to disappear and darken the sky in the middle of the day or even to create an eerie red glow seemingly by magic. This book strips the magic away to provide the space science behind these incredible events.

Book Eclipse Phenomena in Astronomy

Download or read book Eclipse Phenomena in Astronomy written by F. Link and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eclipses and problems related to them have been, from ancient times, one of the main interests not only of astronomers but indeed of all mankind. The appearance of eclipses, lunar as well as solar, excited the imagination of our ancestors and provoked their curiosity to explain their origin or to use them for the further investigation of celestial bodies. With the present development of astronomy the eclipse problems are not limited to the Sun and the Moon, as in the past, but have been progressively extended to the components of the solar system and to domains of radiations other than optical ones. Our intention is to give an account of all these problems in their theoretical and experimental form with some additions on their historical development. Those of our readers not interested in the historical side may feel at first inclined to ignore this part, but we are sure that eventually they will be sufficiently interested to repair this omission.

Book Eclipse Chaser

Download or read book Eclipse Chaser written by Ilima Loomis and published by HMH Books For Young Readers. This book was released on 2019 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The August 2017 solar eclipse is the chance of a lifetime for astronomer Shadia Habbal--years of planning come down to one moment of totality. Will everything go off as planned? On August 21, 2017, much of America stood still and looked up as a wide swath of the country experienced totality--a full solar eclipse. Even in areas outside the path of totality, people watched in awe as the moon cast its shadow on the sun. For most, this was simply a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Not so for Shadia Habbal, who travels the world in search of solar eclipses in order to study the sun's corona. Solar wind and storms originating in the corona can have big effects on our planet. They can disrupt technology, expose aircraft to radiation, and even influence global climate change. In the months leading up to the 2017 eclipse, Shadia assembles a team of scientists to set up camp with her in Mitchell, Oregon. Years earlier, a long, expensive trip to Indonesia to study an eclipse failed when the skies remained too cloudy to see it. Shadia is determined to have the 2017 eclipse be a success. Will the computers fail? Will smoke from nearby fires change direction? Will the cloudy skies clear in time? Readers will be on the edge of their seats as they count down the months, days, hours, and finally minutes until totality.
