Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the shocking and fascinating true story of one of the most dramatic naval events in World War II history. On November 19, 1943, the submarine USS Sculpin, under attack by the Japanese, slid below the waves for the last time in what would become one of the most remarkable stories in U.S. Naval history. Not only did several crewmembers survive the sinking - an extremely rare event in World War II submarine warfare - but several were aboard a Japanese aircraft carrier enroute to a POW camp when it was in turn torpedoed and sunk by the Sculpin's sister ship, the USS Sailfish. At the end of World War II, several unlikely survivors would tell a tale of endurance against these amazing reversals of fortune. For one officer in particular, who knew that being captured could have meant losing the war for the allies, his struggle was not in surviving, but in sealing his own fate in a heartbreaking act of heroism which culminated in the nation's highest tribute, the Medal of Honor. Sculpin Lt. Commander John Phillip Cromwell was one of the few who knew that American Naval Intelligence had succeeded in cracking Japan's top-secret codes. Cromwell also knew that if the Japanese confirmed this by torturing him, it would force Naval Intelligence to change their encryption, which would potentially change the course of the war. This is Cromwell's story as well. The incredible interconnection of the Sculpin and the Sailfish has been thoroughly researched by Jonathan McCullough. Through access to the few living survivors, scores of oral histories, never-before translated Japanese war documents, and interviews with Navy veterans, McCullough delivers a gripping and, intimate account for the reader.

Book Timeskipper

Download or read book Timeskipper written by Stefano Benni and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Margherita Dolce Vita One late-winter morning as he is "hop-hiking" downhill toward his character-building destination, a vomit-yellow cube surrounded by a garden of barbarously unkempt weeds known as the Bisacconi elementary school, Stefano Benni's young hero encounters a peculiar man--as big as a mountain and as filthy as a garbage dump, with a vast beard the color of a dung-heap, dressed from head to foot in layers and rags, and in the company of a swarm of buzzing flies. A god, perhaps? A pagan divinity? Who can tell! After a brief tête-à-tête, this earthy apparition endows the young boy with a rare gift: an internal "duoclock" that allows him to see into the future and at the same time exist in the present with an uncommon fullness. Meet Timeskipper. Timeskipper sees and foresees the epochal events of his era from postwar reconstruction to the birth of television--from the golden age of rock'n'roll to the revolutionary sixties and the turbulent seventies. These events are tenderly offset by his own private experiences: his first love, his first job, leaving home, hilariously wild adventures with oddball acquaintances. This vibrant fictional character is the repository of our collective experience. His is the story of our time, an era of momentous change. A moving and inventive satiric tale in which imagination defies corruption and conformity, in which the innocence of yesteryear comes face-to-face with the moral aridity of today's money-obsessed society, Timeskipper is one of Stefano Benni's most touching and enduring creations. Colored by Benni's trademark linguistic inventiveness and irresistible humor, this is a coming-of-age story with a difference.

Book excerpt: The Caribbean Heritage Series is designed to publish historic re-publications of Trinidad Literary Roots and comprises four Trinidadian novels published between 1838 and 1907. This second volume in the series presents two novels, Adolphus, a Tale and The Slave Son. Adolphus was first published in 1853 and was probably written by a Trinidadian mulatto, thus making it the first Trinidadian, and possibly the first West Indian, novel written by a mulatto and the first novel written by someone born and reared in Trinidad. A dramatic nineteenth-century tale, originally published in the newspapers of the day, Adolphus, traces the adventures of a mulatto son of a black slave women raped by a white man. Raised by a kind Spanish-Trinidadian padre, Adolphus grows into a handsome, well-educated, noble character. Later falling in love with Antonia Romelia, he manages to rescue her from a villainous kidnaper and they flee to Venezuela where they are free to marry. The Slave Son was originally published in 1854 by Chapman and Hall, and according to the author's foreword, it was inspired by Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin and was written to support the abolitionist movement in the Unit.

This book was released on 2012-06-30 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A family with wanderlust, a sailboat to carry them across oceans, and an 11-pound dog to watch over them… These are the elements of this delightful memoir of adventurous living. Young newlyweds Peter and Dorothy Muilenburg found their way from New Hampshire to the Virgin Islands. He had been a civil rights Freedom Fighter, jailed in Mississippi while protesting racial injustice. In St. John, she founded the Pine Peace School. They both taught. On an East End beach, he built a sailboat strong enough to take them anywhere, and they put to sea with their two young sons. But their crew was not yet complete. Santos, a schipperke, came to them as a tiny puppy and sailed with them all his life—75,000 deep-sea miles—four times across the Atlantic, crisscrossing the Caribbean, coasting the U.S. eastern seaboard, exploring the Med, ranging up African rivers. A lightning rod for trouble, he survived a kidnapping, hurricanes, raging surf, being lost overboard at sea, and was twice given up for dead. And he watched over his family with fierce and abiding devotion. If you want to see the world—really see it—go by sailboat. And if you want to absorb the world through every pore, take a venturesome dog as your guide. The bright spirit named Santos became a legend to millions of readers through the pages of SAIL and Reader’s Digest magazines. Now Peter Muilenburg—a wise and observant chronicler with a true wanderer’s desire to engage the world on authentic terms—has written this captivating story of familial love and adventure, unforgettable people and places, and an amazing schipperke who has sailed right into the sea dog hall of fame.

Book Among Heroes Tales of the Jungle Skippers

Download or read book Among Heroes Tales of the Jungle Skippers written by Philip Brinson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-01-10 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formed just two months after Pearl Harbor and rushed to the Pacific by General MacArthur, the 317th Troop Carrier Group entered combat at Wau, New Guinea just one week after landing in Australia. For over two and a half years the men of the 317th flew their unarmed transports over enemy-held territory while living in the hot, humid, disease-infested jungles of New Guinea and the Philippines; many times subjected to Japanese bombings and ground attacks. Their reputation of getting the job done at all costs resulted in the Group being chosen by the 5th AF's General Kenney as the Troop Carrier Group to drop paratroopers in the SWPA; participating in all five major parachute drops in the Pacific: Nadzab, Noemfoor, Tagaytay Ridge, Corregidor and Aparri. These stories, told by the men themselves, chronicle the actions of both the air crews and the often forgotten men on the ground; during and immediately following the war in the Pacific.
