Book excerpt: Paper 1: Even though the skidding resistance of pavements has been studied for many years, many questions concerning the true nature of the interaction of rubber and pavement surface remain unanswered. During field testing, the lack of control over many of the variables which are included in this problem has prevented the effective evaluation of individual factors. For this reason certain tests were carried out by the authors on laboratory specimens which, while not greatly resembling pavements, were planned to eliminate many variables and thus aid in evaluating those which remain. Paper 2: The friction coefficient between a pair of locked automotive tires (running in the normal wheel tracks) and a wet highway surface was determined in an elaborate test program, using a specially constructed test trailer.

Book excerpt: Paper 1: Between December, 1958, and September, 1959, over 300 pavement surfaces, including 6 surface types, were skid tested in Florida using a tapley decelerometer mounted in a passenger vehicle. The skid tests were conducted on a wet surface at 40 mph. Paper 2: The coefficients of friction were experimentally determined for rubber tires on road surfaces in relation to slip when a wheel is braked. The method and equipment are described. Paper 3: The procedure for using a pendulum-type (tapley) decelerometer to measure the coefficient of friction is an empirical one in which the test car is braked for 1 sec and the maximum deceleration recorded by the device. Paper 4: Data are presented for many different types of pavements when dry, set, and snow- and ice-covered, with the latest types of rubber tires indicating the importance for precise measurements of coefficients of friction for the design of modern streets and highways and for developing programs for the prevention of skidding accidents.
