Book Sketches of the Physical Geography and Geology of Nebraska Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sketches of the Physical Geography and Geology of Nebraska Classic Reprint written by Samuel Aughey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the Physical Geography and Geology of Nebraska HE continual demand for some of my papers on the geology of Ne braska, now out of print, suggested the preparation of this volume. It includes in a revised form the most important of my publications on our geology. The greater part of this work, however, is entirely new, and in cludes many facts and observations now for the first time made known. I had intended to give a much fuller treatment of the Loess deposits and pe riod, but the materials have accumulated to such an extent that it was thought best to reserve them for a separate volume. In preparing this work I have always kept in mind the many letters of inquiry continually being re ceived about the State such questions as are most frequently asked of a naturalist about Nebraska. Only a small part of the State has received a de tailed geological examination, and therefore many material points could barely receive mention. In the sketches of our geological history, I have attempted to give an idea of the chain of events that resulted in the present order of things in Nebraska. My conclusions on many points are very dif ferent from others, but I have come to them by a careful study of our geol ogy for fifteen years, with all the means which I could command. Wherever I have used the works of others it is acknowledged in the text. It is possi ble that there are omissions of this kind, as I may not always have remem bered whether myself or another first observed a fact or discovered a princi ple. All such omissions, if any, are unintentional It was intended to ih olude a new geological map of the State in this work, but I have not been able to satisfy myself about the accuracy of some of the boundaries of geo logical formations, and therefore postpone its publication till spring. 0 I am under obligations to Prof. C. D. Wilber for important suggestions; and to many persons over the State, whom I cannot mention in detail, who have provided me with specimens from their localities. I am also under great obligations to the Burlington Missouri River Railroad in Nebraska, to the Union Pacific Railroad, to the Atchison Nebraska Railroad, and to other roads for transportation and other favors. Without the aid thus re ceived, it would have been impossible to make many of the investigations included in this work. Wherever I have gone in the State I have received all possible help from the people in making geological and other natural his tory examinations. Hoping that this work will help others to understand the physical conditions of our State, and stimulate an interest in our natural history, I submit it to the people of Nebraska. Samuel aughey. Book Phytogeography of Nebraska

Download or read book Phytogeography of Nebraska written by Roscoe Pound and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phytogeography of Nebraska: General Survey This work is the result of nearly five years of active study of the floral covering of Nebraska, carried on by the members of the Botanical Seminar in the Botanical Survey of the State. The study of the vegetation of Nebraska, begun when Dr. Bessey came to the University, in 1884, was carried on, chiefly from the floristic side, by members of the Seminar from 1886 to 1892, with zeal and effect. During that time Messrs. Smith, Webber, Williams, and Woods, together with one of the authors of the present work, devoted a large portion of their botanical energies to the determination of the flora of the State and of the distributional boundaries of species. When the Botanical Survey was organized in 1892, both of the authors became members, and from that time, assisted at times by Mr. Smith, Mr. Woods, Mr. Rydberg, Mr. Saunders, Mr. Shear, Mr. Bell, and Mr. Ernst Bessey, they have directed the work of the Survey with a view to the ultimate publication of a report, or a series of reports, in which the floral covering of the State should be treated from the phytogeographical standpoint, and a series of monographs dealing with it from a floristic standpoint. A beginning has been made in the latter direction by the publication of three parts of the Flora of Nebraska. The time seems ripe for putting forth the first installment in the former series. A great deal remains to be done in many directions, such as phenological observations in regions III and IV, for example, that will render a complete phytogeography of Nebraska impossible for many years to come. But the work of the Survey has progressed far enough to enable us to present the general portion of such a phytogeography in an adequate manner, and to deal with detain in many of the more important subjects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nebraska The total yield of corn in Nebraska for 1903 has been placed by various authorities at estimates ranging from to over bushels. The government Crop Reporter places the total yield at little less than bushels. 'the government acreage, however, as reported this year, differs by from their acreage of last year. It is obvious that that is too radical - a change to have taken place in so short a time. Estimates in this report were made by the same authorities both before and after the frosts and are substantially correct. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize-winning view of the continent, across the fortieth parallel and down through 4.6 billion years Twenty years ago, when John McPhee began his journeys back and forth across the United States, he planned to describe a cross section of North America at about the fortieth parallel and, in the process, come to an understanding not only of the science but of the style of the geologists he traveled with. The structure of the book never changed, but its breadth caused him to complete it in stages, under the overall title Annals of the Former World. Like the terrain it covers, Annals of the Former World tells a multilayered tale, and the reader may choose one of many paths through it. As clearly and succinctly written as it is profoundly informed, this is our finest popular survey of geology and a masterpiece of modern nonfiction. Annals of the Former World is the winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction.

Book Fundamentals of Geomorphology

Download or read book Fundamentals of Geomorphology written by Richard John Huggett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 909 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively revised, restructured, and updated edition continues to present an engaging and comprehensive introduction to the subject, exploring the world’s landforms from a broad systems perspective. It covers the basics of Earth surface forms and processes, while reflecting on the latest developments in the field. Fundamentals of Geomorphology begins with a consideration of the nature of geomorphology, process and form, history, and geomorphic systems, and moves on to discuss: structure: structural landforms associated with plate tectonics and those associated with volcanoes, impact craters, and folds, faults, and joints process and form: landforms resulting from, or influenced by, the exogenic agencies of weathering, running water, flowing ice and meltwater, ground ice and frost, the wind, and the sea; landforms developed on limestone; and landscape evolution, a discussion of ancient landforms, including palaeosurfaces, stagnant landscape features, and evolutionary aspects of landscape change. This third edition has been fully updated to include a clearer initial explanation of the nature of geomorphology, of land surface process and form, and of land-surface change over different timescales. The text has been restructured to incorporate information on geomorphic materials and processes at more suitable points in the book. Finally, historical geomorphology has been integrated throughout the text to reflect the importance of history in all aspects of geomorphology. Fundamentals of Geomorphology provides a stimulating and innovative perspective on the key topics and debates within the field of geomorphology. Written in an accessible and lively manner, it includes guides to further reading, chapter summaries, and an extensive glossary of key terms. The book is also illustrated throughout with over 200 informative diagrams and attractive photographs, all in colour.
