Book Sketches of Irish Soldiers in Every Land Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sketches of Irish Soldiers in Every Land Classic Reprint written by Colonel James E. McGee and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Irish Soldiers in Every Land In presenting to the public the following sketches, I am fully aware that I have left out many names of distinguished Irishmen, and omitted or merely glanced at several incidents, historical and biographical, which, if fully related, would redound to the national credit of my chivalrous countrymen in every part of the world. These omissions have not been intentional, but necessary. Within the limits assigned to this book, it was impossible to find place for even the mention of the names of the myriad of heroic Irish soldiers who, during the seventeenth century, battled for religious freedom and independence at home, or who, in the eighteenth, filled the continent of Europe, the Indies, east and west, and our own colonies, with the fame of their bravery and daring. Book excerpt: Excerpt from All on the Irish Shore: Irish Sketches Mrs. Alexander shoved her way into the cabin, through a filthy group Of gabbling male and female tinkers, and found herself involved in a wreck of branches and ragged tarpaulin that had once formed a kind of tent, but was now strewn on the oor by the incursion and excursion of the chase. Earth quake throes were convulsing the tarpaulin; a tinker woman, - full of zeal, dashed at it and ung it back, revealing, amongst other deerz's, an Old wooden bedstead heaped with rags. On either side Of one of its legs protruded the passion-fraught faces Of the coupled hound-puppies, who, still linked together, had passed through the period of unavailing struggle into a state of paralysed insanity Of terror. Muf ed squeals and tinny crashes told that con ict was still raging beneath the bed; the tinker women screamed abuse and complaint; and suddenly the dachshund's long yellow nose, streaming with blood, worked its way out Of the folds. His mistress snatched at his collar and dragged him forth, and at his heels followed an infuriated tom cat, which, with its tail as thick as a muff, went like a streak through the confusion, and was lost in the dark ruin of the chimney. Book In the Irish Brigade

Download or read book In the Irish Brigade written by G. A. Henty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Irish Brigade: A Tale of War in Flanders and Spain The evils arising from religious persecution, sectarian hatred, ill-government, and oppression were never more strongly illus trated than by the fact that for a century Ireland, which has since that time furnished us with a large proportion of our best soldiers, should have been among our bitterest and most formidable foes, and her sons fought in the ranks of our greatest continental enemy. It was not because they were adherents of the house of Stuart that Irishmen left their native country to take service abroad, but because life in Ireland was rendered well-nigh intolerable for Catholics on account of the nature and severity of the laws against them, and the bitterness with which those laws were carried into effect. An Irish Catholic had no prospects of employment or ad vancement at home. He could hold no civil appointment of any kind; he could not serve as an officer, nor even enlist as a private, in the army; he could not hold land; he was subject to imprisonment, and even death, on the most trifling and frivolous accusations brought against him by the satellites of the Irish Government. Not only 'could he not sit in the parliament of Dublin, but he could not even vote at elections. It was because they believed that the return of the Stuarts would mean relief from at least some of their disabilities, and liberty to carry out the offices of their religion openly, and to dwell in peace, free from denunciation and persecution, that the Irish remained so long faithful to the Jacobite cause. The reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, the latter certainly, one of the most interesting characters in Spanish history, was rendered forever famous by three eminent men - Cardinal Ximenes, the consummate statesman; Christopher Columbus, the most successful navigator of any age; and Gonsalvo of Cordova, surnamed the Great Captain, one of the seven chiefs whom Sir William Temple, in his Essay on Heroic Virtue, says, deserved without wearing a crown. Book The Irish at the Front Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Irish at the Front Classic Reprint written by Michael MacDonagh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish at the Front This narrative of the more signal feats of the Irish Regiments in France, Flanders, and at the Dar danelles, is based on letters of regimental officers and men, interviews with wounded soldiers of the battalions, and those invalided home, and, also, in several cases, on the records compiled at the depots. The war is the greatest armed struggle that the world has ever seen, and when we think of the heroism and resolution shown in it, the trials and the suffer ings, the victories and the disasters, and then turn to the bald and trite official despatches, the dissimili tude of things, the contrast, is most abrupt and jarring. But so it is, and probably we must continue to rely upon the accounts given by the men in the fighting line for any real appreciation of the nature of the war. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kiltie McCoy: An American Boy With an Irish Name Fighting in France as a Scotch Soldier I might well, if I Chose, Charge a woman with the responsibility for my enlistment in the army Of His Majesty, King George V of England. It was a Charm ing little English matron, armed with a measly little white feather who fanned into a blaze of action the tiny flame that had long smoldered in my subconscious self. Adam blamed a woman, but Adam died quite a while ago as I remember the story. There was some thing, however, before the woman and her white feather, that actually brought me, an American Citizen and proud of it, to enlist at the very outset of the world's greatest war, to leave my country, my flag, my citizenship, even my name, and to enter the service of the king of a foreign land. And that something was a knowledge of that great American game - you may call it penny-ante, draw, or just plain poker as you like - which prompted me to action.
