Book Atomic Structure and Lifetimes

Download or read book Atomic Structure and Lifetimes written by Lorenzo J. Curtis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-30 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new approach to introductory graduate courses on atomic structure. The author's approach utilizes conceptually powerful semiclassical modeling methods, and demonstrates the degree to which the Maslov-indexed EBK quantization elucidates the quantum mechanical formulation of level energies and lifetimes. It merges this with an update and extension of semiempirical data systematizations developed by Bengt Edlén to describe complex atoms, and adapts them to include the specification of lifetimes. The text emphasizes the historical basis of the nomenclature and methodologies of spectroscopy. However, interaction mechanisms are presented deductively, based on quantum mechanical and field theoretical models, rather than tracing their indirect paths of discovery. Many worked examples provide applications to areas such as astrophysics, hyperfine structure, and coherent anisotropic excitation. The book presents a firm foundation for specialists in atomic physics, as well as a capstone application for specialists in astrophysics, chemistry, condensed matter, and other related fields.

Book Power Of Alpha The Electron Elementary Particle Generation With Alpha quantized Lifetimes And Masses

Download or read book Power Of Alpha The Electron Elementary Particle Generation With Alpha quantized Lifetimes And Masses written by Malcolm H Mac Gregor and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007-03-12 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is centered on the most pressing unsolved problem in elementary particle physics — the mass generation of particles. It contains physics that is not included in the Standard Model as it is now formulated, while at the same time being in conformity with the major results of the Standard Model, i.e. isotopic spins and interactions. It differs from the Standard Model in the treatment of masses and pseudoscalar mesons, and in the role assigned to the coupling constant α. Presented in a careful and phenomenological way, the material can easily be followed by all physicists, both experimental and theoretical, and also by interested workers in other fields. The author's website — 70mev.org — gives additional information about the applications of the constant α in particle physics.

Book Drawing the Sea Near

Download or read book Drawing the Sea Near written by C. Anne Claus and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Japanese coastal residents and transnational conservationists collaborated to foster relationships between humans and sea life Drawing the Sea Near opens a new window to our understanding of transnational conservation by investigating projects in Okinawa shaped by a “conservation-near” approach—which draws on the senses, the body, and memory to collapse the distance between people and their surroundings and to foster collaboration and equity between coastal residents and transnational conservation organizations. This approach contrasts with the traditional Western “conservation-far” model premised on the separation of humans from the environment. Based on twenty months of participant observation and interviews, this richly detailed, engagingly written ethnography focuses on Okinawa’s coral reefs to explore an unusually inclusive, experiential, and socially just approach to conservation. In doing so, C. Anne Claus challenges orthodox assumptions about nature, wilderness, and the future of environmentalism within transnational organizations. She provides a compelling look at how transnational conservation organizations—in this case a field office of the World Wide Fund for Nature in Okinawa—negotiate institutional expectations for conservation with localized approaches to caring for ocean life. In pursuing how particular projects off the coast of Japan unfolded, Drawing the Sea Near illuminates the real challenges and possibilities of work within the multifaceted transnational structures of global conservation organizations. Uniquely, it focuses on the conservationists themselves: why and how has their approach to project work changed, and how have they themselves been transformed in the process?

Book The Life Times Labours of Robert Owen

Download or read book The Life Times Labours of Robert Owen written by Lloyd Jones and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-01-08 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1771, in Newtown, Wales, Robert Owen moved to Manchester and became a highly successful capitalist. Appalled by the divisions industrial capitalism wrought on society and children in particular, he fought for legislation to improve the health, education and rights of working people, and strived to put his own ideas into practice. He encountered much opposition, not least from the Church of England. However he influenced many social reformers. Frederick Engels was a friendly critic and great admirer. On the occasion of Owen's death he played tribute to him as the first man "to place socialism on a practical basis." Today the Co-operative Movement embraces one-billion members world-wide. Its tremendous success, especially in the form of workers' co-operatives, remains a testament to his foresight, as well as providing living proof there are viable and more efficient alternatives to global capitalism.
