Book Analysis of the Skeletal and Dental Changes Associated with Herbst Appliance Therapy

Download or read book Analysis of the Skeletal and Dental Changes Associated with Herbst Appliance Therapy written by Thomas M. Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall goal of this research project is to evaluate the skeletal and dental changes when a Class II malocclusion is corrected using the Herbst appliances compared to similar malocclusions treated with Class II elastics; for the purposes of this study, this will be referred to as the control group. More specifically, cephalometric radiographs will be used to: (1) study the SNA, SNB, and ANB angle changes in Class II malocclusion patients who receive treatment with elastics or a Herbst appliance, (2) study the change in the lower incisor to the mandibular plane angle (IMPA), and compare the results with a control group of patients. Further, the pre-Herbst and post-Herbst measurements will be compared to determine if there is a significant change. The hypothesis will be that the Herbst appliance will cause a change in the SNA, SNB, and ANB angles, and alter the IMPA as compared to Class II correction with elastics.

Book Dental Skeletal and Growth Effects of Malocclusions Treated with the Van Beek Headgear Activator and Comprehensive Fixed Orthodontic Appliances

Download or read book Dental Skeletal and Growth Effects of Malocclusions Treated with the Van Beek Headgear Activator and Comprehensive Fixed Orthodontic Appliances written by Matthew W. Kotyk and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively assess the long term dental and skeletal treatment and growth changes in growing patients with Class II malocclusions treated with the van Beek Headgear Activator (vBHGA) appliance followed by comprehensive fixed orthodontic appliance treatment. A retrospective chart review was undertaken on 40 consecutively treated subjects who were then compared to matched growing untreated control subjects from the Burlington Growth Study and growth forecast simulations. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were used to determine dental, skeletal and growth changes between each treatment phase. Phase 1 vBHGA appliance treatment produced skeletal and dental Class II correction via restraint of maxillary anterior growth, increased mandibular anterior growth, counter clockwise palatal plane rotation, retroclination and retraction of the upper incisors, and proclination and protrusion of the lower incisors resulting in reduced overjet and overbite. The favourable skeletal and dental changes from vBHGA treatment were maintained after the completion of the second treatment phase. The vBHGA appliance was effective in correcting Class II malocclusions by producing favourable skeletal and dental treatment effects in both jaws that were maintained after the completion of phase 2 treatment, in stark contrast to published randomized clinical trials. Success with the vBHGA and potentially other growth modification appliances could be related to patient compliance, timing of the individual's growth spurt, length of phase 1 treatment, and continued orthopedic retention between the first and second phases of treatment.

Book A Detailed Description of Dental and Skeletal Changes Associated with Class II Surgical orthodontic Treatment

Download or read book A Detailed Description of Dental and Skeletal Changes Associated with Class II Surgical orthodontic Treatment written by Brittany Leigh Weaver Potts and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Introduction: There is little information that details the dental changes that accompany pre-surgical and post-surgical orthodontics during orthognathic surgery treatment. Methods: Thirty-four Class II subjects who underwent surgical- orthodontic treatment with mandibular advancement and rigid fixation were selected and the lateral cephalograms digitized. Mean skeletal and dental values were calculated and plotted for pre-treatment, pre-surgical and final treatment time points. Treatment efficacy as a percentage of an ideal goal achieved also was calculated. Results: All data showed there were significant positive changes in the position of the mandible. The mean changes demonstrated: the upper incisors were over retracted pre-surgically and then returned to normal position post-surgically while the lower incisors were proclined and protruded pre-surgically and remained so at posttreatment. The dynamic changes showed that the incisors were not ideally decompensated in many of the cases. This was further substantiated by the efficacy data. Conclusions: The dynamic changes and efficacy data show that pre-surgical orthodontic treatment often does not fully decompensate the incisors, which then limits the surgical outcome.
