Book Inside Edge A Revealing Journey Into the Secret World of Figure Skating

Download or read book Inside Edge A Revealing Journey Into the Secret World of Figure Skating written by Christine Brennan and published by Japanime Co. Ltd.. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Figure skating is the most beautiful and mysterious of all sports. When the skaters are on the ice, every twitch of a muscle and every slip of a skate blade is visible for the world to see. In Inside Edge, Christine Brennan chronicles—for the first time—a season on the skating circuit, intimately portraying the lives, on and off the ice, of the sport's current and upcoming stars. Woven into the narrative are stories of figure skating luminaries—including Peggy Fleming, Janet Lynn, Katarina Witt, Brian Boitano, Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yamaguchi, Nancy Kerrigan, Oksana Baiul, Michelle Kwan, Rudy Galindo, and Tara Lipinski. Revealing the backstage conflicts high-profile figure skaters face, and the ambition that drives them, Brennan also tells the stories of their families, of improbable rises to the top, and of wasted talents. If skaters are perfect, they can become international heroes. But if they fall, if they miss a three-revolution jump on a quarter-inch blade of steel, the despair is theirs alone. This is their life on the edge, where decades of training culminate in little more than four crucial minutes on the ice. There is no other sport like it. There is no other story like theirs.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter vi Eights--Qs--Reverse Qs. "vt ow that the edges, changes, turns, Mohawks, and- Choctaws have all been spoken of, there remain to consider (apart from Combined Skating) only the possible combinations of these, and their adaptation to the form of eights or modified eights, which in their simplest form, as has been mentioned, are complete circles of edges, outside or inside, skated on alternate feet, each of which starts from and again arrives at the centre. But into these edges can be worked turns or combinations of turns which are, so to speak, incidental to these simple complete circles, and occur either in the course of them or at the centre itself. Each circle of the eight goes on its way, starting from and arriving at the centre, and into its course are interpolated turns, brackets or Mohawks, or at the centre are placed rockers, counters, or Choctaws. Theoretically it is possible to skate any number of turns during the course of the circle; but three turns to each circle are the most that can be skated with any profit. One Turn to a Centre The simplest eight, after the edges have been mastered, is the forward turn to a centre, beginning on outside or inside edges. The line diagram (Fig. 9) shows the map of the figure if skated with ideal precision. The letters Bop, Kip, Bob, Bib in this and all diagrams denote right outside forward, right inside forward, right outside back, right inside back; while Lop, LiF, Lob, Lib, denote the same edges on the left foot. The arrows show the direction of curve. Outside Forward Turn The skater in all eights, and in every combined figure (unless otherwise directed) stands a little way back from his centre, and takes up his edge close to the centre, with the centre on the inside of his curve....

Book excerpt: Figure skating is the second most watched sport on television after NFL football, commanding lucrative endorsements and fame for its stars. Yet, the real action of figure skating takes place off the ice, behind closed doors. Until now, no one in skating's inner circle has dared to expose the dirty little secrets of the seemingly pristine sport: it would have signaled an end to his or her career. Jon Jackson, a former Olympic level judge and competitive figure skater, has already ended his, and he is ready to talk. During the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, the Russian gold medal debacle in the Pair Event publicly revealed the hidden world of bribery and collusion that is standard operating procedure across the sport. On Edge, takes readers on a twenty year journey through the private hotel rooms and hospitality suites where the culture thrives and multiplies, culminating in the days, weeks, and months following the Salt Lake City gold medal scandal. Rebelling against this covert culture, Jackson co-created the World Skating Federation in hopes of freeing the industry from the stranglehold of the seemingly omnipotent US Figure Skating Association (USFSA). Detailing his battle, Jackson reveals his reservations about the continued corruption.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During those early days of coaching, I searched everywhere for a book that carefully explained the techniques behind skating. It was hard for me to remember the basics. I wanted to be more specific about where a skater should press on the blade, how to teach jump rotation, increase speed, etc. This is the book I wanted but couldn't find when I started my coaching career. This book is a resource for the skater who wants to transition from being an athlete to being a coach. I hope it can inspire skaters to not only build a strong baseline, but help them create their own ideas about coaching. The most amazing thing I found during my coaching journey is how everything in figure skating connects and builds on itself. I would not be the coach I am today without the foundations I received as a skater and built on as a coach. About the Author Jessica Rensch grew up skating in Florida and Colorado. She graduated from James Madison University with a degree in psychology and applies her degree towards teaching, coaching, and writing. Jessica is fascinated with the way figure skating works and loves sharing what she learns with other skaters and coaches. She enjoys learning from others and discovering new and creative ways to teach skating skills. Jessica lives in Missouri with her husband, son, and three donkeys.
