This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Years in Upper Canada With Autobiographical Recollections The story to be related by me, at the request of various friends, is one marked by few uncommon incidents and fewer extraordinary events. It tells somewhat of the social advancement of Upper Canada, and much more of its political progress, and I have endeavored to portray, candidly and faithfully, some of the leading occurrences of the past sixty years in that direction. In that time I have witnessed the new growth of an old Province, now rejuvenated and well on its way to manhood and nationality. To do this with a knowledge that men are still living, or have but lately passed from the scene, under and largely by whom these changes have been effected, is to attempt a difficult task. It is to write, to some extent at least, with fettered hands, and to be tempted to almost beg a question when outspokenness is preferable. Book Life in Canada

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Canada: Fifty Years Ago; Personal Recollections and Reminiscences of a Sexagenarian When a man poses before the world - even the Canadian world - in the rule of an author, he is expected to step up to the footlights, and explain his purpose in presenting himself before the public in that capacity. The thoughts of the world are sown broadcast, very much as the seed falls from the sweep of the husbandman's hand. It drops here and there, in good ground and in stony places. Its future depends upon its vitality. Many a fair seed has fallen on rich soil, and yet never reached maturity. Many another has shot up luxuriantly, but in a short time has been choked by brambles. Other seeds have been cast out with the chaff upon the dung heap, and after various mutations, have come in contact with a clod of earth, through which they have sent their roots, and have finally grown into thrifty plants. A thought thrown out on the world, if it possesses vital force, never dies. How much is remembered of the work of our greatest men? Book The Autobiography of James L Smith

Download or read book The Autobiography of James L Smith written by James L. Smith and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 1881-01-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into slavery in Virginia, James Smith grew up knowing great cruelty as well as unexpected kindnesses. Always longing for freedom, as a young man he was able to make a daring escape. Once in the north, he made a life for himself, married and raised a family, continued his education, and keenly observed the changing world around him as America came to blows in the Civil War. After the war, he made a trip back to Virginia, reuniting with siblings he had not seen in decades: "My joy and excitement rose to such a height, that I scarcely knew whether I was in the body or out." He even had an astonishingly warm visit with a former owner who brought him in to dinner. Of the plight of African-Americans post-emancipation, Smith observed objectively: "But, say you, the day of trial is over, the stream of sympathy may be dried up because of the nominal freedom that has been vouchsafed. I say to you nay my whole race is yet in peril, and God only knows the end." For the first time, this long-out-of-print book is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Getting the message through A Branch History of the U S Army Signal Corps

Download or read book Getting the message through A Branch History of the U S Army Signal Corps written by Rebecca Robbins Raines and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1996 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.
