Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emanuel Aloys Förster (1748–1823) was among the most significant composers of Viennese chamber music at the turn of the nineteenth century. The three sets of six string quartets that he published are exemplary works in the genre at that time, fine examples of the intellectually and emotionally engaging nature of classical string quartets. Yet these works are not part of the standard chamber music repertoire, nor are they much discussed by musicologists, except in terms of the supposed “influence” between Förster and Beethoven. Thus our assessment of this important composer in general, and his contributions to Viennese string quartet culture around 1800 in particular, is hampered by a narrowness of vision. As shown in this new edition of Förster’s op. 21 (1803), Förster remained close to the overall design for string quartets that Haydn and Mozart had set, with some experiments in form and movement order in quartet no. 3. In other respects they present increasingly experimental writing. The harmonic innovations in quartet no. 4, for example, are especially striking; they require an excellent performing ensemble to render them effective. Förster also explored the special effects that are achievable by a string quartet, as in the Adagio con sordino from quartet no. 4. Hymnlike adagios that unfold in elaborate, ornamental lines also become increasingly prominent in op. 21, his final published set of string quartets.

Book Beethoven The Moonlight and Other Sonatas Op 27 and Op 31

This book was released on 1999-10-21 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in Beethoven's day the 'Moonlight' Sonata was a popular favourite. This 1999 book provides an accessible introduction to the Sonatas Opp. 27 and 31 (including The 'Moonlight' and 'The Tempest'), aimed at pianists, students, and music lovers. It begins with the works' historical background - the emergence of a 'piano culture' at the end of the eighteenth century, Beethoven's aristocratic milieu in Vienna, and his oft-quoted intention to follow a new compositional path. An account of the sonatas' genesis is followed by a discussion of their reception history, including a survey of changing performing styles since the mid-nineteenth century. The concept of the Sonata quasi una Fantasia is examined in relation to the cult of artistic sensibility in early-nineteenth-century Vienna. The study concludes with a critical introduction to each sonata.

Book Music Description and Access

Download or read book Music Description and Access written by Jean Harden and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music Description and Access: Solving the Puzzle of Cataloging is both a textbook for students and a handbook and reference source for practicing catalogers. The bulk of the book is a step-by-step guide to cataloging music materials, with dozens of examples showing images of published scores or audio recordings. Content and encoding are treated separately, using RDA and MARC21. Interspersed in the chapters on practical cataloging are short Historical Asides, essays putting particular devices or conventions into context. These essays supplement a chapter on cataloging history, which follows an introductory chapter that sets the stage for the task at hand. The book ends with a chapter by Maristella Feustle on describing and providing access to music special collections, using both archival and rare-music-cataloging standards. Aids in navigating the book include an index plus multiple lists and tables. A bibliography and a list of cataloging tools that are available online are also given.
