This book was released on 2016-09-11 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Lectures Introductory to the Philosophical Writings of Cicero: With Some Explanatory Notes on the Subject-Matter of the Academica and De Finibus Aristotle; or as that succeeding, when the once brilliant ame of Athenian speculation ickered with the uncertain light of Alexandrian mysticism, before its final extinction in the Obscurity of the dark ages. A careful consideration of the course of Greek thought during this period, may, I think, reveal to us many points of interest, which will render it worthy of minute investigation, - which may discover for it a character of its own, too marked to be overlooked by the historian of the development of human opinion, - and may Show that it involves issues too important to be neglected by the critic of later systems of philosophy. Every event in general history should be viewed in connection with the circumstances which preceded and caused it, with those which accompanied and determined it, and with those which followed and resulted from it. So, in recording the succes sive phases Of human opinlon, which are the events in a his tory of philosophy, we must consider them with reference to preceding speculations, to those contemporaneous with them. • Author : Epictetus

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Discourses written by Epictetus and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2020-04-07T18:49:07Z with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raised a slave in Nero’s court, Epictetus would become one of the most influential philosophers in the Stoic tradition. While exiled in Greece by an emperor who considered philosophers a threat, Epictetus founded a school of philosophy at Nicopolis. His student Arrian of Nicomedia took careful notes of his sometimes cantankerous lectures, the surviving examples of which are now known as the Discourses of Epictetus. In these discourses, Epictetus explains how to gain peace-of-mind by only willing that which is within the domain of your will. There is no point in getting upset about things that are outside of your control; that only leads to distress. Instead, let such things be however they are, and focus your effort on the things that are in your control: your own attitudes and priorities. This way, you can never be thrown off balance, and tranquility is yours for the taking. The lessons in the Discourses of Epictetus, along with his Enchiridion, have continued to attract new adherents to Stoic philosophy down to the present day. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
