Book Site Investigation for Low rise Building

Download or read book Site Investigation for Low rise Building written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of a site investigation is to examine the ground conditions so that the most appropriate type of foundation can be selected. A typical site investigation begins with a desk study and a walk-over survey to establish the general geology of the site, and continues with an examination of the geotechnical properties of the ground. There are many techniques but boreholes and, in particular, shallow trial pits can provide an economic and versatile way of examining and assessing the in situ soil conditions. The technical requirements of the investigation, rather than the cost, should be the controlling factor in the selection of the investigatory methods.

This Digest discusses the various techniques for direct investigation of a site and provides guidance on how to select the appropriate method for a specific location. This is one of aset of Digests dealing with site investigations. The other Digests in the set are listed in page 12.

Book Site Investigation for Low rise Building

Download or read book Site Investigation for Low rise Building written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Site investigation is the study of site conditions to determine their probable influence on the design, construction and subsequent performance of a building. An initial desk study forms an important part of the site investigation process to assess the suitability of a site for development. A subsequent ground investigation determines the types and distribution of the subsoil to be found below a site and the groundwater conditions.

Book Site Investigation for Low rise Building

Download or read book Site Investigation for Low rise Building written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important part of any site investigation is a careful, accurate description of the ground where the building is to be constructed. Much useful information on the likely ground behaviour can be gained from a good description of the soil or rock encountered. To obtain a proper description of the ground, the soil must be examined in its natural state; trial pits and, where appropriate, boreholes should therefore be excavated to a layout plan proposed in advance. The investigation should be based on knowledge gained from the desk study and walk-over survey. It must take into account the variations in the topography and local geology of the site, together with the anticipated layout of the building and its foundations. This Digest explains how to make an accurate description of soil. It does not consider the description of rocks in any detail, though many aspects of soil description are also applicable to them.

Book Low rise Buildings on Fill

Download or read book Low rise Buildings on Fill written by Andrew Charles and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scarcity and cost of suitable land is leading increasingly to the development of sites where there are deep deposits of fill. Occasionally cases are reported where serious failures have occurred. These reports should not obscure the fact that many buildings have been successfully built on fill; they emphasise the importance of understanding the behaviour of fills, identifying potential hazards and adopting measures that will ensure successful development of these sites. Part 2 recommends that construction on existing filled areas should be preceded by careful investigation of the site which should be both appropriate and adequate. The site investigation may indicate that ground treatment is required before construction to improve the load-carrying properties of the fill, reducing or forestalling the effects of the unexpected. The Digest gives guidance only of a general nature and it must be recognised that the services of civil, structural and geotechnical engineers will usually be needed.

Book Structural Defects Reference Manual for Low Rise Buildings

Download or read book Structural Defects Reference Manual for Low Rise Buildings written by Michael F. Atkinson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Structural Defects Reference Manual for Low-Rise Buildings has been written to assist professionals and students involved in building construction to identify causes of structural failure. Each chapter carefully addresses design, materials and workmanship factors which contribute to structural defects. The main structural elements - roofs, walls, floors and foundations - are all covered and illustrated by case studies. The book also contains relevant data and guidance to show how all the different building elements should be designed and constructed.

Book Site Investigation for Low rise Building

Download or read book Site Investigation for Low rise Building written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The walk-over survey is an integral and important part of the site investigation process which should always be carried out. Used in conjunction with a good desk study (Digest 318), it provides valuable information which cannot be obtained in any other way. The object of the survey is to check and make additions to the information already collected during the desk study. The site and its surrounding area should be visited and covered carefully on foot. Local authorities, local inhabitants and people working in the area, such as builders, electricity and gas workers, should be questioned to obtain the benefit of their local knowledge. A structured report is then produced from the information gathered at the site and from local enquiries.

Part 3 presents guidance for the specification and control of fills which are to be placed so that they can safely support low-rise buildings without the occurrence of damaging movements. Such fills are described as foundation fills. When new fill is to be placed, careful selection of the material and controlled placement should ensure that the fill forms an adequate foundation material. Part 3 is particularly relevant to building developments where relatively small volumes of fill are being placed (typically less than 50 000 m3) and consequently the resources available for design, testing, etc are quite limited. The Digest gives guidance only of a general nature and it must be recognised that the services of civil, structural and geotechnical engineers will usually be needed.

Book Handbook of Geotechnical Investigation and Design Tables

Download or read book Handbook of Geotechnical Investigation and Design Tables written by Burt G. Look and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-04-26 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical handbook of properties for soils and rock contains, in a concise tabular format, the key issues relevant to geotechnical investigations, assessments and designs in common practice. In addition, there are brief notes on the application of the tables. These data tables are compiled for experienced geotechnical professionals who require a reference document to access key information. There is an extensive database of correlations for different applications. The book should provide a useful bridge between soil and rock mechanics theory and its application to practical engineering solutions. The initial chapters deal with the planning of the geotechnical investigation, the classification of the soil and rock properties and some of the more used testing is then covered. Later chapters show the reliability and correlations that are used to convert that data in the interpretative and assessment phase of the project. The final chapters apply some of these concepts to geotechnical design. This book is intended primarily for practicing geotechnical engineers working in investigation, assessment and design, but should provide a useful supplement for postgraduate courses.

Book Using the Building Regulations

Download or read book Using the Building Regulations written by Michael J. Billington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Building Regulations and Approved Documents have become more and more complex, they have become increasingly unfriendly for a professional user. Compliance is only possible by understanding a wide range of supporting documentation. Alternative approaches are implied, but not described or analysed. This book examines Approved Document C on Site Preparation and takes the user through all the key stages of preparation, compliance, inspection and enforcement. It offers practical advice on using not just the traditional routes to compliance but also on the alternative approaches suggested but not explained in the Approved Documents. The advantages and disadvantages of each form of compliance are analysed in depth. Everything you need to know to prepare a site's fixtures against contamination and moisture is discussed, including floors, walls, window frames, door tresholds, and roofs. This is an indispensable text for professional designers, architects, structural and other specialist engineers, building control officers and students in construction, building and architecture.
