Book excerpt: Margo Sinclair has lived for centuries, cursed with immortality after an ancient ritual went wrong. Once a revered Elydian Queen, now she is a mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of high society-wealthy, powerful, and untouchable. With a heart hardened by centuries of loss, Margo has one rule: never get close to anyone. Mortals are fleeting, destined to die, leaving her alone every time. To distract herself from the loneliness that gnaws at her soul, Margo has taken up a dark hobby-hunting and eliminating criminals and society's lowest scum, dispensing her brand of justice in the shadows. It's the only thing that gives distraction, allowing her to channel her centuries of anger and frustration. But when Margo meets Aveline, a resilient and unapologetic sex worker shunned by society, her carefully constructed walls begin to crack. Aveline is everything Margo isn't-fearless in her vulnerability, living life with a boldness Margo has long forgotten. Drawn to her in ways she can't explain, Margo faces a dilemma: stay distant and continue her endless, empty existence, or risk the agony of loss for a love that could finally make her feel alive again. As Margo grapples with her growing connection to Aveline, she must confront the demons of her past and the question that haunts her immortality: Is love worth the pain of inevitable loss? And can someone who has only known solitude truly open her heart when eternity is the price?

Book excerpt: Teen Genreflecting serves as a guide to contemporary teen fiction, encompassing every genre and format, including graphic novels, scrapbook-formatted books, verse novels, historical fiction, speculative fiction, contemporary realistic fiction, and more. Teen literature is one of the most popular and quickly growing segments of the publishing world. Not only are teens continuing to read for pleasure, but many adults have discovered the joys of teen literature. As part of the Genreflecting Advisory Series, Teen Genreflecting provides librarians with a road map to the vibrant and diverse body of literature focusing on recent fiction for teens, organizing and describing some 1,300 titles, most published within the past ten years, along with perennial classics. The authors indicate where each title fits in the genre scheme; its subject matter, format, and general reading level; and any pertinent awards. They also provide advice on readers' advisory services to teens, descriptions of genres and subgenres, and lists of favorites for each genre. Book Sisters Seeds and Cedars

Download or read book Sisters Seeds and Cedars written by Fountain, Sarah M. and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History consists mainly of the milestones, the turning points of time. What are often lost in the fray are the details. Thankfully for those who have a hunger for history, books like Sisters, Seeds, and Cedars exist to fill in some of the gaps of history. The book contains letters from two sisters, Cornelia and Clara. Originally from Alabama, Clara moves on to Arkansas, while Cornelia stays where her roots are. Clara eventually puts down roots of her own, and the sisters' continue to converse through letter writing for their entire lives. The letters span the generations and provide insight into everyday life between 1850-1928. Without them, it might not be known that "a dewlarkie is most likely a slang word of the period for a beau." The letters also provide details of the effects of the Civil War on the citizens of the South. As the sisters recover from the war, they must adjust to their new lives, filled with carpetbaggers and sharecroppers. While it may be impossible to know all the details of history, letters that have survived and have been preserved in a book like Sisters, Seeds, & Cedars paint a more complete picture of events that have shaped the world and families alike. Sarah Moseley Fountain is a native Arkansan dedicated to Arkansas literature, history, and culture. She lives in Conway, Arkansas.

Book Love and Death in the Great War

Download or read book Love and Death in the Great War written by Andrew J. Huebner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans today harbor no strong or consistent collective memory of the First World War. Ask why the country fought or what they accomplished, and "democracy" is the most likely if vague response. The circulation of confusing or lofty rationales for intervention began as soon as President Woodrow Wilson secured a war declaration in April 1917. Yet amid those shifting justifications, Love and Death in the Great War argues, was a more durable and resonant one: Americans would fight for home and family. Officials in the military and government, grasping this crucial reality, invested the war with personal meaning, as did popular culture. "Make your mother proud of you/And the Old Red White and Blue" went George Cohan's famous tune "Over There." Federal officials and their allies in public culture, in short, told the war story as a love story. Intervention came at a moment when arbiters of traditional home and family were regarded as under pressure from all sides: industrial work, women's employment, immigration, urban vice, woman suffrage, and the imagined threat of black sexual aggression. Alleged German crimes in France and Belgium seemed to further imperil women and children. War promised to restore convention, stabilize gender roles, and sharpen male character. Love and Death in the Great War tracks such ideas of redemptive war across public and private spaces, policy and implementation, home and front, popular culture and personal correspondence. In beautifully rendered prose, Andrew J. Huebner merges untold stories of ordinary men and women with a history of wartime culture. Studying the radiating impact of war alongside the management of public opinion, he recovers the conflict's emotional dimensions--its everyday rhythms, heartbreaking losses, soaring possibilities, and broken promises.
