Download or read book Sissies and Tomboys written by Matthew Rottnek and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1999-05 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1973, homosexuality was officially depathologized with a revision in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Psychiatry. In 1980, a new diagnosis appeared: Gender Identity Disorder of Childhood (GID). The shift separated gender from sexuality, while it simultaneously reinforced traditional concepts of "male" and "female" and made it possible for cross-gendered behavior and/or identification to be deemed psychiatric illness. What is the difference then between a child being called a sissy on the playground and being labeled with a disorder in a psychiatric hospital? Combining theory and personal narrative, this volume interrogates the meaning of "the normal" that pervades the literature on GID and investigates the theoretical underpinnings of the diagnosis. Sissies and Tomboys considers how the stigma of illness influences a child's development and what homosexual childhood, freed from the constraints of conventionally acceptable gender expression, might look like.
Download or read book Sissy Insurgencies written by Marlon B. Ross and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sissy Insurgencies Marlon B. Ross focuses on the figure of the sissy in order to rethink how Americans have imagined, articulated, and negotiated manhood and boyhood from the 1880s to the present. Rather than collapsing sissiness into homosexuality, Ross shows how sissiness constitutes a historically fluid range of gender practices that are expressed as a physical manifestation, discursive epithet, social identity, and political phenomenon. He reconsiders several black leaders, intellectuals, musicians, and athletes within the context of sissiness, from Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, and James Baldwin to Little Richard, Amiri Baraka, and Wilt Chamberlain. Whether examining Washington’s practice of cleaning as an iteration of sissiness, Baldwin’s self-fashioned sissy deportment, or sissiphobia in professional sports and black nationalism, Ross demonstrates that sissiness can be embraced and exploited to conform to American gender norms or disrupt racialized patriarchy. In this way, sissiness constitutes a central element in modern understandings of race and gender.

Book excerpt: This original and fresh approach to the emotions of adolescence focuses on the leisure lives of working-class boys and young men in the inter-war years. Being Boys challenges many stereotypes about their behaviour. It offers new perspectives on familiar and important themes in interwar social and cultural history, ranging from the cinema and mass consumption to boys’ clubs, personal advice pages, street cultures, dancing, sexuality, mobility and the body. It draws on many autobiographies and personal accounts and is particularly distinctive in offering an unusual insight into working-class adolescence through the teenage diaries of the author’s father, which are interwoven with the book’s broader analysis of contemporary leisure developments. Being Boys will be of interest to scholars and students across the humanities and social sciences and is also relevant to those teaching and studying in the fields of child development, education, and youth and community studies.

Download or read book Modern American Queer History written by Allida Mae Black and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twentieth century, countless Americans claimed gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender identities, forming a movement to secure social as well as political equality. This collection of essays considers the history as well as the historiography of the queer identities and struggles that developed in the United States in the midst of widespread upheaval and change. Whether the subject is an individual life story, a community study, or an aspect of public policy, these essays illuminate the ways in which individuals in various locales understood the nature of their desires and the possibilities of resisting dominant views of normality and deviance. Theoretically informed, but accessible, the essays shed light too on the difficulties of writing history when documentary evidence is sparse or coded, Taken together these essays suggest that while some individuals and social networks might never emerge from the shadows, the persistent exploration of the past for their traces is an integral part of the on-going struggle for queer rights.
Download or read book From Boy to Sissy Baby written by Ben Pathen and published by AB Discovery. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sissy Baby is an incredibly important and common aspect of ABDL life. These four novels are not books that are a full-on sissy extravaganza from the first word until the last. They are – like in real life – a step-by-step journey that follows the story of a young man who finds femininity erupting in his life, just as infancy is also developing. The twin aspect merge and a sissy baby is formed. And in every case, the sissy baby needs to find a life where they are able to live, develop, grow and be part of a relationship that works and matters. I hope you enjoy these four novels as much as the authors enjoyed writing them and it is worth remembering that while they are fiction, they do represent part of the canvas of real life and some scenes are based in part on actual events. Enjoy your travels through the world of the sissy adult baby.
