Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Thomas More: The Blessed Thomas More This little book is not the work of a historian. I should not have ventured to undertake it, if the life of Sir Thomas More had not been already written by a member of the craft. Father Bridgett's work is soundly critical; I have followed it step by step and sometimes simply abbreviated it. Needless to say I have carefully re-read More's works and the contemporary documents which the monumental collection of the Letters and Papers renders universally accessible. My object in doing so was not to gather a few trifling discoveries, forgotten or overlooked by scholars like Father Bridgett and Mr Gairdner, but to give a lively and fresh impression of the events, and to become as familiarly as possible acquainted with Sir Thomas More. His nature, for all its limpidity, is difficult to know thoroughly. Ever in earnest and ever in fun, its very transparence adds to its mystery, and the extreme variety of its gifts is disconcerting. I flattered myself that I could paint More exactly as I saw him, but my ambition was greater than my strength. The most delicate chapters of this life would have to be rewritten, and the rest indefinitely retouched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wisdom and Wit of Blessed Thomas More: Being Extracts From Such of His Works as Were Written in English In 1891 I published the Life and Writings of Sir Thomas More. In that volume I gave a short account of his various books and pamphlets both in Latin and English, together with numerous extracts and translations. Several of my reviewers expressed a hope that a complete Library Edition of the Works of More might soon be undertaken. Perhaps the present collection may serve as a sample both of his matter and manner, and hasten the desired reprint. As such a publication, however, would be very costly, and must of course retain the old spelling, it would not bring the wisdom or the wit of the great writer much nearer to the general public, and the selection I have made would still be useful. I had announced a reprint, somewhat abridged, of the holy martyr's Dialogue of Comfort against Tribulation, written by him in the Tower; but I am glad to find there is a remainder of Dolman's reprint still on sale by Mr. Baker, of 1 Soho Square. I have, therefore, merely added extracts from it to selections from his other writings. I have thought it better not to reproduce here any of the passages of More's various writings that I have interwoven into his life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Blessed Thomas More This story of the life and sufferings of one of the noblest and blithest of Christ's martyrs has been written for young readers by a member of the Community of Tyburn Convent. It seems specially fitting that one who has devoted herself to a life of prayer and reparation upon the blood-stained soil of Tyburn, should be chosen to write of a martyr who so earnestly longed to die there, and was indeed condemned to suffer there, though finally he was spared its horrors. The writer, who comes of a stock famous in literature, has herself worked for some years in the world with her pen. That pen is now devoted to the glory of God and His martyrs. Although there is nothing new to say of Blessed Thomas More, his story is always fresh, always inspiring. We cannot possibly hear too much of him. Book The Life of Sir Thomas More

Download or read book The Life of Sir Thomas More written by William Roper and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English statesman and writer Sir Thomas More (1478-1535) is best remembered as both a humanist scholar-as author of the classic 1516 political satire *Utopia*-and a religious martyr: he was beheaded by King Henry VIII for refusing to acknowledge the monarch as the head of the Church of England. Much of what we know about his life comes courtesy of this biography, by his son-in-law, English politician WILLIAM ROPER (1498-1578). Written in the mid 16th century but not published till 1626, this is history told from the perspective of a primary source-it is a riveting eyewitness account of the last days of one of the great figures of English history and literature. This reprint of an 1822 edition includes some family letters, including More's last written communication before his death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Sir Thomas More Besides the two editions mentioned there exists a photographic facsimile of the manuscript prepared by Mr. R. B. Fleming and issued in a series of Tudor Facsimile d104s. It is the full size of the original and leaves nothing to be desired in the way of technical execution, but of course the covering of tracing paper and the staining of the margins render many passages hopeless for the photographer. What purpose of general utility it was thought that a facsimile of which a large part is absolutely illegible could serve, I do not know, but to me it has proved invaluable, indeed without its help I should have hardly found the present work possible. It is also incidentally of value in preserving intact one or two passages which have since been damaged in the manuscript. It remains to say something as to the present edition. The rules which govern the editing of the Malone Society's texts of course forbade any attempt to patch up a compromise between the original and revised versions of the play. On the other hand there were obvious drawbacks to printing the manu script exactly as it stood. After some hesitation therefore I determined to print first the whole of the original text so far as it has been preserved, and then to gather together at the end all the various attempts at revision in so far as they were made on separate leaves and did not merely consist of trifling additions or directions written in the margins of the original sheets. These insertions I have printed in the order in which they at present stand in the manuscript, and have numbered them I - VI. The hand in which any particular passage is written I have indicated in the headline and more minutely in the notes. Any addition or alteration (of a whole word or more) made in a hand different from that of the text of that passage, is distinguished by the substitution of small capitals for lower case type; specific information concerning the hand being added in the notes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Thomas More It is now twelve years since I began to study the life and writings of the great hero of conscience whom this book commemorates. The work has been often laid aside, but never wholly abandoned, and in spite of the demands of a laborious profession I have been able, I think, to become acquainted with most of the literature which describes and illustrates Mores beautiful life. With the exception of Mr.S. L.Lee's admirable, and, for its length, exhaustive, contribution to the Dictionary of National Biography, which cannot be obtained in a separate form, and Father Bridgett's valuable biography, which is concerned primarily with the life of More as a defender of the Papal Supremacy, there are no modern works which have made use of all the material that is at the disposal of students of this period. Much interest attaches to the earlier biographies from from the circumstances connected with their composition and publication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Writings of Sir Thomas More: Lord Chancellor of England and Martyr Under Henry VIII In More's dedicatory letter to Thomas Ruthal of his translation into Latin of three of Lucian's dialogues, he complained that writers of the lives of saints sometimes indulge in falsehoods: "They have scarcely left. a life of martyr or of virgin without foisting into it something untrue - piously, no doubt! for of course there was a danger lest truth, left to itself, should not be able to stand upright; so that it was necessary to prop it up with lies!" I may say that my first anxiety in composing this Life of the illustrious writer, chancellor and martyr, has been not to merit this reproach; to state nothing that I did not believe, and to accept nothing for which I had not historical evidence. My first care was to collate the biographies of More already in existence. In giving some account of the principal of these, I shall be able at the same time to state the sources from which a correct and complete life of More can be drawn.
