Book Sir Richard Blackmore and the Bible

Download or read book Sir Richard Blackmore and the Bible written by Michela Pizzol Giacomini and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Richard Blackmore (1650_1729) was deeply affected by the Protestant poetic trends in England, which favored the Sacred Scriptures as a source for what was termed 'divine poetry.' His preference also prized the religious poetic trends as a spiritual weapon against vice and atheism. His advocacy of ideas upholding virtue, morality, and Christianity in a world that was undergoing phenomenal changes in its mores served as a backbone for the renewal and strengthening of the increasing popularity of divine poetry. This work further explores the Bible's influence on Blackmore's physico-theological poems, his personal notions of a Creator, and his scientific ideas.

Book excerpt: Written in 1727, The Art of Sinking in Poetry was one of Alexander Pope's contributions to the literary output of the legendary Scriblerus club - a circle of writers dedicated to mocking what they perceived as a culture of mediocrity and false learning prevalent in the arts and sciences of their day. Taking the form of an ironic guide to writing bad verse, Pope's tongue-in-cheek essay is wickedly funny in its lampooning of various pompous poetasters, as well as being essential reading for any budding writer wishing to avoid sinking to the unintentionally ridiculous, and instead reach for the sublime.

Book A Form of Sound Words

Download or read book A Form of Sound Words written by Harriet Guest and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, Christopher Smart has been represented as a mystical and eccentric poet, a colorful visionary of only peripheral importance to our understanding of eighteenth-century literature. This study challenges that view, offering a reassessment of Smart's work and examining the age in which he wrote and his place in it. Guest reappraises his religious poetry in the context of theories of language and natural philosophy, as well as in the context of a vast range of writing--from private devotions and sermons, to hymns and biblical criticism--demonstrating the pervasive and complex significance of religion in the period.

Book The Practice of Satire in England 1658 1770

Download or read book The Practice of Satire in England 1658 1770 written by Ashley Marshall and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exhaustive study of satire in the long eighteenth century. Outstanding Academic Title, Choice In The Practice of Satire in England, 1658–1770, Ashley Marshall explores how satire was conceived and understood by writers and readers of the period. Her account is based on a reading of some 3,000 works, ranging from one-page squibs to novels. The objective is not to recuperate particular minor works but to recover the satiric milieu—to resituate the masterpieces amid the hundreds of other works alongside which they were originally written and read. The long eighteenth century is generally hailed as the great age of satire, and as such, it has received much critical attention. However, scholars have focused almost exclusively on a small number of canonical works, such as Gulliver's Travels and The Dunciad, and have not looked for continuity over time. Marshall revises the standard account of eighteenth-century satire, revealing it to be messy, confused, and discontinuous, exhibiting radical and rapid changes over time. The true history of satire in its great age is not a history at all. Rather, it is a collection of episodic little histories.
