Book A Short History of Napoleon the First

Download or read book A Short History of Napoleon the First written by Sir John Robert Seeley and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been many biographies of the Emperor Napoleon over the years and in many languages, however most tend to be either overly laudatory, mostly those written in French, or caustically negative, mostly those written in English. Thankfully this work suffers neither polarity of opinion, sticking to historical fact, rigorous analysis and an even handed portrayal of the subject, without any undue distortion from the realities of the era. Professor Seeley’s biography grew, as he says himself in his preface, out of an impossible task to provide a shortened biographical sketch of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Unsatisfied that so great a subject could be adequately be dealt with in such a format, he penned his excellent short work on Napoleon. Free from vitriol the book sets a standard that few modern works can be said to have achieved.

Download or read book Victorian Jesus written by Ian Hesketh and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecce Homo: A Survey in the Life and Work of Jesus Christ, published anonymously in 1865, alarmed some readers and delighted others by its presentation of a humanitarian view of Christ and early Christian history. Victorian Jesus explores the relationship between historian J. R. Seeley and his publisher Alexander Macmillan as they sought to keep Seeley’s authorship a secret while also trying to exploit the public interest. Ian Hesketh highlights how Ecce Homo's reception encapsulates how Victorians came to terms with rapidly changing religious views in the second half of the nineteenth century. Hesketh critically examines Seeley’s career and public image, and the publication and reception of his controversial work. Readers and commentators sought to discover the author’s identity in order to uncover the hidden meaning of the book, and this engendered a lively debate about the ethics of anonymous publishing. In Victorian Jesus, Ian Hesketh argues for the centrality of this moment in the history of anonymity in book and periodical publishing throughout the century.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of The Ascent of Money and The Square and the Tower “A dazzling history of Western ideas.” —The Economist “Mr. Ferguson tells his story with characteristic verve and an eye for the felicitous phrase.” —Wall Street Journal “[W]ritten with vitality and verve . . . a tour de force.” —Boston Globe Western civilization’s rise to global dominance is the single most important historical phenomenon of the past five centuries. How did the West overtake its Eastern rivals? And has the zenith of Western power now passed? Acclaimed historian Niall Ferguson argues that beginning in the fifteenth century, the West developed six powerful new concepts, or “killer applications”—competition, science, the rule of law, modern medicine, consumerism, and the work ethic—that the Rest lacked, allowing it to surge past all other competitors. Yet now, Ferguson shows how the Rest have downloaded the killer apps the West once monopolized, while the West has literally lost faith in itself. Chronicling the rise and fall of empires alongside clashes (and fusions) of civilizations, Civilization: The West and the Rest recasts world history with force and wit. Boldly argued and teeming with memorable characters, this is Ferguson at his very best.

Book Ends of British Imperialism

Download or read book Ends of British Imperialism written by William Roger Louis and published by I. B. Tauris. This book was released on 2006 with total page 1092 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pax Britannica to Pax Americana is the story of the British Empire from its late-nineteenth century flowering to its present extinction. Louis traces the British Empire from the scramble for Africa, the turbulent imperial history of the Second World War in Asia, and the mid-20th century rush to independence to the Suez crisis, the icon of empire's end. It forms the ideal platform from which to examine the aims and outcome of empire. This authoritative and highly engaging history appears at a time when interest in the history of the British Empire has, ironically, never been stronger, making Ends of British Imperialism a must-read item for both scholar and general reader.
