Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the INTRODUCTION IN a literary sense, whoever follows Francis Bacon feeds at the highest line of the world's literature. This is as true to-day, as it was two centuries ago. His matchless ideation and cogency of reason, were never equaled. These proclaim him the world's literary master, and in a sense not yet made manifest, as we shall see. We agree with Macaulay that the amplitude of his comprehension was never yet vouchsafed to any other human being. This it was that gave character to his vast reform, its subtlety of execution, and its never before attempted method of introduction. Its key-note, using his own words, was: "Without the help of the knowledge of evil, virtue remains open and unfenced." With his views the deeps of Satan should be all known to him who would be the true instructor, as we shall see later from his own words. We shall also see, that he undertook to exercise a providence over all human learning, and in this, among other things, reports a history of literature wanting. We here set you up a point, Reader. Let it be retained, please, throughout the reading of this work, to wit, "a history of literature is wanting." To supply this was but part of his great Posthumous Pocket labors. While throughout, as in his Plays, entertainment of the mind was to be the lever, the help of the knowledge of evil was to be the fulcrum, to lift the age to a higher level. We shall here invite the attention of the student of English literature to something new; and which will render it more easy, both of apprehension and retention. But whatever we may do in this work, we desire above all else to make it clear, that Francis Bacon's key, his "Formula of Interpretation," this new light, was never revealed by him while living, but was reserved to a private succession, as we shall see. Following his fall, he says: "I shall devote myself to letters, instruct the actors and serve posterity. In such a course, I shall perhaps find honor and I shall pass my life as within the verge of a better." These actors were factors of his pen. They were his facets of light. They were his "hands of my hands." Their doings, Reader, were to come out from the "cabinets, boxes and presses" named in his last will. When his story, the covert story of Elizabeth's successor has been rightly told; it will not appear as strangely as now, that he ended not his earthly career by death at the Earl of Arundel's house, as now generally supposed; but was covertly behind that great struggle which put Charles 1st from the English throne. We come to you in this work, Reader, with a new message. We shall endeavor, in the main, to give Bacon's words throughout leaving the reader to his own conclusions. Upon the thread of his life we shall find, among others, his Shakespeare Sonnets, his Plays, his dream drama,—"The Pilgrim's Progress,"—his "Holy War," his "History of the Devil," his "Milton," his "Tale of a Tub," addressed to posterity, and that work of durance his "Sartor Resartus." And "the river of his history" will long bear them up....

Book Golden Lads

Download or read book Golden Lads written by Daphne du Maurier and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the publication of Golden Lads, Anthony Bacon was viewed as a footnote in the history of his younger brother, Francis. A fascinating historical figure in his own right, Anthony Bacon was a contemporary of the brilliant band of gallants who gathered around the court of Elizabeth I, was closely connected to the Earl of Essex, and worked in France as a spy for Sir Francis Walsingham. While living in France he became acquainted with Henri IV and the essayist Michel de Montaigne, and it was there that Daphne du Maurier discovered a secret that, if disclosed during Bacon's lifetime, could have put an end to his political career. Du Maurier did much to uncover the truth behind matters that had long puzzled Elizabethan historians, while telling a strange and fascinating tale. "Daphne du Maurier has no equal."-Sunday Telegraph

Book excerpt: Many accounts of the life of Francis Bacon have been written for scholars. But du Maurier's aim in this biography was to illuminate the many facets of Bacon's remarkable personality for the common reader. To her book she brought the same gifts of imagination and perception that made her earlier biography, Golden Lads, so immensely readable, skillfully threading into her narrative extracts from contemporary documents and from Bacon's own writings, and setting her account of his life within a vivid contemporary framework. "Unlike many authors of popular historical biographies, du Maurier resembled Antonia Fraser in being an indefatigable researcher."-Francis King

Book Bacon A Biography of Sir Francis Bacon

Download or read book Bacon A Biography of Sir Francis Bacon written by Charles Williams and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Williams’ biographical account of the life of Sir Francis Bacon was first published in 1933. He identified five major modes of thought that he believed permeated Bacon’s actions. William’s biography also includes self-reflective elements of theological discussion, which was typical of his writing style. Charles Williams (1886-1945) was a British theologian, playwright, novelist and poet. As a member of the ‘Inklings’ literary group at Oxford, his work supported a strong sense of narrative. For Williams, spiritual exchanges were an undercurrent to life, and his Christian fantasy writing, such as 'Descent into Hell' (1937), earned him many followers. This classic work is now being republished in a new modern edition with a specially commissioned introductory biography.

Book Sir Francis Bacon

Download or read book Sir Francis Bacon written by Biographiq and published by Biographiq. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Francis Bacon - English Philosopher and Statesman is the biography of Sir Francis Bacon, an English philosopher, statesman, and essayist. Bacon is also known as a proponent of the scientific revolution. According to John Aubrey, his dedication may have brought him into a rare historical group of scientists who were killed by their own experiments. His works established and popularized an inductive methodology for scientific inquiry, often called the Baconian method or simply, the scientific method. In the context of his time such methods were connected with the occult trends of hermeticism and alchemy. Nevertheless, his demand for a planned procedure of investigating all things natural marked a new turn in the rhetorical and theoretical framework for science, much of which still informs conceptions of proper methodology today. Bacon was knighted in 1603, created Baron Verulam in 1618, and created Viscount St Alban in 1621; without heirs, both peerages became extinct upon his death. He has also been credited as the creator of the English essay. Sir Francis Bacon - English Philosopher and Statesman is highly recommended for those interested in reading more about this admired English philosopher and statesman.
