Book excerpt: Wallace L. Dow's enduring legacy is visible throughout Sioux Falls and across South Dakota. His distinctive structures, whether civic buildings or private residences, are beholden to no single architectural style. A New Hampshire native, Dow was brought to the Dakota Territory in the 1880s by Governor Nehemiah Ordway. Dow quickly established himself as the preeminent architect of the Dakota prairie, designing iconic structures like Sioux Falls Courthouse and the penitentiary, as well as many beautiful private residences. Using local Sioux quartzite, Dow's buildings gave the emerging Dakota Territory an identity. Yet the architect himself remains something of a mystery. Join author and Dow documentarian Jennifer Dumke as she uncovers Dow's story, recounting the life and work of a true Sioux Falls original who left his mark statewide.

Book excerpt: The falls of the Big Sioux River were formed 14,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, as melting ice eroded a channel down to the bedrock, revealing an abundance of Sioux quartzite. The power and beauty of the falls have attracted people to the area ever since, while Sioux quartzite has been used to construct many of the area's buildings. Incorporated as a city in 1856, Sioux Falls has steadily grown from a population of 17 at the time of establishment to 153,888 as of the 2010 census. As a natural part of that growth, change dictates that the old and worn out should make way for the new and shiny. Lest these things be forever forgotten, this book strives to point out what has been lost, what has been saved, and what can be found if one knows where to look.

Book Sioux City Illustrated

Download or read book Sioux City Illustrated written by E. P. Heizer and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sioux City Illustrated: The Pioneer Period and an Authentic Sketch of the Sioux City of Today; Illustrated The History of Sioux City may be conveniently considered in two distinct epochs, viz.: the period during which it was connected with the movement of trade and settlement which pierced the Northwest, following the waterway of the Missouri River; and the later period during which its growth has been determined by the comprehensive transfer of population, effected by the building of railroads westwardly. The former epoch began with the arrival, in June, 1856, of the first steamboat freighted for Sioux City, which, that year, grew to be a town of 400 inhabitants; it may he said to close with the completion of the first railroad, in March, 1868. All that goes before - and it would make a chapter of romantic story - relates to the time of pure adventure in the northwest, rather than to its substantial development; it includes the day of exploration, of the French voyager, of the trader and the trapper. The first account of the visit of white men to Woodbury County is that of the famous exploring expedition of Lewis and Clark, in 1804. This is immortalized by the names they gave to localities, and one spot is sacred as the last resting place of the first of their number who fell during the expedition. On the 20th of August, 1804, Sergt. Charles Floyd died and was buried by his comrades on a high bluff overlooking the Missouri River. The grave is still to be seen on the bluff which bears his name, and his memory has a more enduring record in the Floyd River, which, passing through the city limits of Sioux City, empties into the Missouri two miles above this bluff. In the summer of 1848, a single pioneer, William Thompson, settled at Floyd's Bluff, his brother and another man joining him in the fall. Next year he laid out a town there, calling it Thompsonville. Thompson's cabin was the sole improvement, but on the organization of the county, in 1853, the villa was made the county seat, and it was a sort of post for Indian traders for some years. Not a vestige of Thompsonville remains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in the World's Wonderland, Illustrated: A Graphic Description of the Great Northwest, From the Mississippi River to the Land of the Midnight Sun; Including Descriptions of Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Fremont, Lincoln, Kansas City, Ottumwa, Fort Madison I cannot find it in my heart to pass them by. We were not strangers to each other when our Western pilgrimage began. It was a little doubt ful if they were equal to the task, but our associations had been SO pleasant I could not leave them behind. They were my constant com panions. They stood by me in every emergency. Through States and Territories they led me safely on. From St. Paul to Alaska they never faltered. Amid the wilds Of the Columbia Valley they were fearless, heroic. At the terrible Dalles, when a big salmon, maddened because he had come into collision with my hook, nearly pulled me into the river, -my faithful friends clung to the soil and preserved my life. We tramped together through the boiling water Of the National Park 5 down by the great falls of the Yellowstone and through rain, hail, and mud in the Grand Canon. When we emerged from our sojourn in the park, they looked sickly; I feared that the hour Of separation was at hand. During the night they met a young colored physician in the Pullman car, and when I awoke in the morning they were beside my berth, their cheeks glowing in ruddy health. Home was reached and my gratitude promoted my companions to the most exalted position. But Objections were made, they were so big and coarse, and to my great sorrow they were forced upon the retired list, where, amid their venerable com panions, they will relate the wondrous adventures of their journey.
