Egli considera l'arte come il "vivente", cioè la "forma", ritenendo che tra forma e contenuto non esista dissociazione perché esse sono l'una nell'altra. Nelle pagine di De Sanctis vi è una felice vena di scrittore. Egli infatti scrive con una prosa antiletteraria, fervida e mirabile per l'immediatezza dl pensiero.
