Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following his salvation of the Homo Colossus species, and several other even more endangered species, Wil established an empire that became known as the Celestian Empire after a long naming competition sponsored by Wils and Jens ship, Firefly who turned out to be canny investor. Numerous species on hundreds of planets participated in the competition, with the ten million dollar prize being won by a teen-aged human girl from the original Earth. The Empire grew powerful under Wils strong leadership. Wil kept his hareem, including his sister Jen, and his great aunt Ruth and his grandmother Glee and his favorite mother, Rika. He had two hundred five mothers in all. The harem was extended by five additional female giants, Stephanie, Emmanuelle, Constanza, and Arabella and Brigitte. This took the total in numbers to seven hundred twenty five, but the gain from the giants was greater because each was nine meters tall, and each was dedicated to Wil alone. Their brother, Michael, was one meter taller. Not all of the concubines were Wils mothers. Wil made few more girls. Instead, the Imperial Palace rang to the sound of growing boys and girls fathered by him at first, and then by his male offspring. He imported some new boys, humans and Gideonese, but mostly HCs. Amber repaid Aisha, and to some extent Wil, by showing Aisha the secrets of her double vagina. With a specialized womb for boys and another for girls, Aisha at last had real children, of both sexes, fathered by Wil. The last seventeen confiscated concubines joyously took service contracts which pledged lifetime bonds to Wil, although not so strongly as the giants pledge. Male giants were too big to penetrate other species.

Book excerpt: In a technologically suppressed future, information demands to be free in the debut novel from Hugo Award-winning author Charlie Stross. In the twenty-first century, life as we know it changed. Faster-than-light travel was perfected, and the Eschaton, a superhuman artificial intelligence, was born. Four hundred years later, the far-flung colonies that arose as a result of these events—scattered over three thousand years of time and a thousand parsecs of space—are beginning to rediscover their origins. The New Republic is one such colony. It has existed for centuries in self-imposed isolation, rejecting all but the most basic technology. Now, under attack by a devastating information plague, the colony must reach out to Earth for help. A battle fleet is dispatched, streaking across the stars to the rescue. But things are not what they seem—secret agendas and ulterior motives abound, both aboard the ship and on the ground. And watching over it all is the Eschaton, which has its own very definite ideas about the outcome...

Book Singularity Rising

Download or read book Singularity Rising written by James D. Miller and published by BenBella Books. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ray Kurzweil's New York Times bestseller The Singularity is Near, the futurist and entrepreneur describes the Singularity, a likely future utterly different than anything we can imagine. The Singularity is triggered by the tremendous growth of human and computing intelligence that is an almost inevitable outcome of Moore's Law. Since the book's publication, the coming of the Singularity is now eagerly anticipated by many of the leading thinkers in Silicon Valley, from PayPal mastermind Peter Thiel to Google co-founder Larry Page. The formation of the Singularity University, and the huge popularity of the Singularity website kurzweilai.com, speak to the importance of this intellectual movement. But what about the average person? How will the Singularity affect our daily lives—our jobs, our families, and our wealth? Singularity Rising: Surviving and Thriving in a Smarter, Richer, and More Dangerous World focuses on the implications of a future society faced with an abundance of human and artificial intelligence. James D. Miller, an economics professor and popular speaker on the Singularity, reveals how natural selection has been increasing human intelligence over the past few thousand years and speculates on how intelligence enhancements will shape civilization over the next forty years. Miller considers several possible scenarios in this coming singularity: • A merger of man and machine making society fantastically wealthy and nearly immortal • Competition with billions of cheap AIs drive human wages to almost nothing while making investors rich • Businesses rethink investment decisions to take into account an expected future period of intense creative destruction • Inequality drops worldwide as technologies mitigate the cognitive cost of living in impoverished environments • Drugs designed to fight Alzheimer's disease and keep soldiers alert on battlefields have the fortunate side effect of increasing all of their users' IQs, which, in turn, adds a percentage points to worldwide economic growth Singularity Rising offers predictions about the economic implications for a future of widely expanding intelligence and practical career and investment advice on flourishing on the way to the Singularity.

Book A Naked Singularity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sergio de la Pava
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2012-04-09
  • ISBN : 0226141802
  • Pages : 690 pages

Download or read book A Naked Singularity written by Sergio de la Pava and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-04-09 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Propulsive . . . The novel’s chaotic sprawl, black humor and madcap digressions make it a thrilling rejoinder to the tidy story arcs [of] most crime fiction.” —The Wall Street Journal Winner of the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Best Debut Novel Named a Best Book of the Year in the Wall Street Journal, Houston Chronicle, and Philadelphia City Paper A Naked Singularity tells the story of Casi, born to Colombian immigrants, who lives in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan as a public defender—one who, tellingly, has never lost a trial. Never. In the book, we watch what happens when his sense of justice and even his sense of self begin to crack—and how his world then slowly devolves. A huge, ambitious novel in the vein of DeLillo, Foster Wallace, Pynchon, and even Melville, it’s told in a distinct, frequently hilarious voice, with a striking human empathy at its center. Its panoramic reach takes readers through crime and courts, immigrant families and urban blight, media savagery and media satire, scatology and boxing, and even a breathless heist worthy of any crime novel. If Infinite Jest stuck a pin in the map of mid-90s culture and drew our trajectory from there, A Naked Singularity does the same for the feeling of surfeit, brokenness, and exhaustion that permeates our civic and cultural life today. In the opening sentence of William Gaddis’s A Frolic of His Own, a character sneers, “Justice? You get justice in the next world. In this world, you get the law.” A Naked Singularity reveals the extent of that gap, and lands firmly on the side of those who are forever getting the law. “A great American novel.” —Toronto Star

Book excerpt: Robotic minds made interstellar travel possible, but human minds still controlled the destination and purpose of such flight. Conflict develops only when a programmed brain cannot evaluate beyond what is visible and substantial, whereas the human mind is capable of infinite imagination - including that which is unreal. Such was the problem at the singularity in space in which the ALTAIR STAR and a hundred other vessels had come to grief. At that spot, natural laws seem subverted - and some other universe's rules impinged. For Buchanan, the station meant a chance to observe and maybe rescue his lost vessel. For the robotic navigators of oncoming spaceships, the meaning was different. And at Singularity Station the only inevitable was conflict.

Download or read book Hegel in A Wired Brain written by Slavoj Žižek and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slavoj Žižek gives us a reading of a philosophical giant that changes our way of thinking about our new posthuman era. No ordinary study of Hegel, Hegel in a Wired Brain investigates what he might have had to say about the idea of the 'wired brain' – what happens when a direct link between our mental processes and a digital machine emerges. Žižek explores the phenomenon of a wired brain effect, and what might happen when we can share our thoughts directly with others. He hones in on the key question of how it shapes our experience and status as 'free' individuals and asks what it means to be human when a machine can read our minds. With characteristic verve and enjoyment of the unexpected, Žižek connects Hegel to the world we live in now, shows why he is much more fun than anyone gives him credit for, and why the 21st century might just be Hegelian.
