Book The Life and Times of George Fernandes

Download or read book The Life and Times of George Fernandes written by Rahul Ramagundam and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2022-07-25 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Militant Trade Union Leader. The Dauntless Political Rebel. The Passionate Socialist Dreamer. This is a biography of India's George Fernandes. George Fernandes (1930-2019)-a firebrand trade union leader, socialist politician and incredibly powerful orator-is popularly known for leading the All India Railwaymen's Federation (AIRF) in May 1974 and calling upon its approximately 1.7 million employees to strike, which brought India to a halt for twenty days. Often described as a rebel, he pursued every cause he took up with passionate devotion, heedless of the many ups and downs in his life. From the early years of fighting for the rights of dock and municipal workers of Bombay (now Mumbai) through the Emergency, which he resisted by going underground, to his last private decade as a bed-ridden Alzheimer's patient, his fights were always persistent and single-handed. George could call Bombay to be shut down and rose from its streets to become India's Defence Minister. The Life and Times of George Fernandes chronicles the story of George, who rose from the streets of Bombay to stride the corridors of power. In this extraordinary biography, Rahul Ramagundam opens a window to George's political evolution and traces the course of the Socialist Party in India from its inception in 1930s to its dissolution into the Janata Party in the late 1970s. In the process, this book explores the trail of India's opposition parties that worked to displace the long-ruling Congress Party from its preeminent position. Comprehensive, evocative and fascinating, this first definitive biography of George Fernandes is an unputdownable tour de force.

Book Nitish Kumar and the Rise of Bihar

Download or read book Nitish Kumar and the Rise of Bihar written by Arun Sinha and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2011 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conventional wisdom in Bihar's political circles was that development did not win votes. Nitish Kumar challenged that assumption and changed the face of the state. Born into a humble family in Bakhtiyarpur, Nitish joined the Lohiaite Socialist Party and built his constituency, literally day by day, forgoing a stable job to travel to distant villages, suffering both financial hardship and ridicule for the eight years it took him to win people's confidence. Veteran journalist Arun Sinha tells the story of Nitish Kumar's rise against the larger canvas of social and political upheaval in Bihar, exploring the emergent desire for equality that drove progressive movements from late 1960s onwards and brought about a regime change by the 1990s. After an initial association with Lalu Prasad Yadav, Nitish Kumar rejected identity politics, recognizing that Bihar had to transcend caste if it was to grow. Nitish Kumar and the Rise of Bihar is a clear-sighted study of Indian electoral politics that unfolds with the pace of a political drama, offering hard facts and an incisive analysis of the state's turbulent trajectory. Sinha steers the narrative deftly through the complex groupings of Bihar's political arena to reveal Nitish Kumar's acumen in bringing law and order, roads, education and health to the fore of governance. From feudal politics to caste identities, and finally to development Bihar could prove to be the model for India's post-Independence journey.

Book Indian Muslim s after Liberalization

Download or read book Indian Muslim s after Liberalization written by Maidul Islam and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Close to the turn of the century and almost 45 years after Independence, India opened its doors to free-market liberalization. Although meant as the promise to a better economic tomorrow, three decades later, many feel betrayed by the economic changes ushered in by this new financial era. Here is a book that probes whether India’s economic reforms have aided the development of Indian Muslims who have historically been denied the fruits of economic development. Maidul Islam points out that in current political discourse, the ‘Muslim question’ in India is not articulated in terms of demands for equity. Instead, the political leadership camouflages real issues of backwardness, prejudice, and social exclusion with the rhetoric of identity and security. Historically informed, empirically grounded, and with robust analytical rigour, the book tries to explore connections between multiple forms of Muslim marginalization, the socio-economic realities facing the community, and the formation of modern Muslim identity in the country. At a time when post-liberalization economic policies have created economic inequality and joblessness for significant sections of the population including Muslims, the book proposes working towards a radical democratic deepening in India.

Download or read book Emergency Chronicles written by Gyan Prakash and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gripping story of an explosive turning point in the history of modern India On the night of June 25, 1975, Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency in India, suspending constitutional rights and rounding up her political opponents in midnight raids across the country. In the twenty-one harrowing months that followed, her regime unleashed a brutal campaign of coercion and intimidation, arresting and torturing people by the tens of thousands, razing slums, and imposing compulsory sterilization on the poor. Emergency Chronicles provides the first comprehensive account of this understudied episode in India’s modern history. Gyan Prakash strips away the comfortable myth that the Emergency was an isolated event brought on solely by Gandhi’s desire to cling to power, arguing that it was as much the product of Indian democracy’s troubled relationship with popular politics. Drawing on archival records, private papers and letters, published sources, film and literary materials, and interviews with victims and perpetrators, Prakash traces the Emergency’s origins to the moment of India’s independence in 1947, revealing how the unfulfilled promise of democratic transformation upset the fine balance between state power and civil rights. He vividly depicts the unfolding of a political crisis that culminated in widespread popular unrest, which Gandhi sought to crush by paradoxically using the law to suspend lawful rights. Her failure to preserve the existing political order had lasting and unforeseen repercussions, opening the door for caste politics and Hindu nationalism. Placing the Emergency within the broader global history of democracy, this gripping book offers invaluable lessons for us today as the world once again confronts the dangers of rising authoritarianism and populist nationalism.

Book Governance and Development in India

Download or read book Governance and Development in India written by Seyed Hossein Zarhani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the political economy of development in India is significant as India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing countries during the last three decades and the rate of economic growth and poverty reduction have not been matched in India’s subnational states. Although the Union Government has introduced and implemented several economic reforms since 1991 to enhance the economic development, the results of implantation have varied. Governance and Development in India compares two Indian subnational states, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. The book does not consider the state as an aggregate entity; rather, it disaggregates the state relationally and spatially. Concentrating on the micro-institutional variables and the role of regional elites, the author investigates the political roots of the divergence of development trajectories among India’s subnational states since liberalization, as an essential aspect of the political economy of development in India. The book explores the black box of the multi-layered state of India and interactions among the Central Government, the states, regional leaders and other stakeholders and explains why the regional leaders have pursued divergent economic strategies using the analytical narrative research method and the subnational comparative research method. Firmly based on the theoretical foundations of the neo-institutional rational choice model of governance, polycentric hierarchy theory and the strategies for regional elite strategy analysis, combined with empirical research, this book is a valuable contribution to the fields of comparative political economy, state politics in India, governance and development in developing countries, and South Asian comparative politics.

Book The Gandhian Statesman of Bihar Nitish Kumar

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the eyes of those who had lost all hopes in Bihar, Nitish Kumar has acquired the status of a miracle man. After all, how did he work for the revival of the state? Nitish Kumar is not a professional manager, he is a politician. When he took over as the Chief Minister of Bihar in November 2005, he frequently reminded the officials that the performance of the government was at stake in his ministry and not in the bureaucracy. If the government succeeds, then all the credit will be given his ministry. If it fails, his ministry will have to own the responsibility. Bureaucrats would not lose their jobs, but he (the Chief Minister) will have to go. Inspite of all this, Nitish Kumar earned a permanent place in the hearts of the people by working towards solving the issues related to the basic needs of the people and he emerged as the pioneer of social revolution. This process of improvement continues unabated. A readable and collectable saga that introduces you to the untold, inspiring, interesting, and adventurous campaigns of the social revolution of Nitish Kumar.

Book Economics of the Food Processing Industry

Download or read book Economics of the Food Processing Industry written by Debdatta Saha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a wealth of perspectives on studying the manufacturing end of food processing industries, with a special focus on regions with a low industrial base and multiple missing markets, institutional finance being the most prominent example. Positioning food processing within the industrial ecosystem, which includes entrepreneurs, policymakers, business consultants and associations, the study first considers three different trajectories: for developed economies, for national territories like India, and for sub-national regions like Bihar. In turn, it shows how these trajectories intertwine in two dimensions: the region and the sub-sector. Successfully completing food-processing projects in any of these trajectories requires the identification and development of appropriate product networks that link basic processed items with advanced ones through a chain of value addition. Moreover, the supply-side narrative presented here identifies two types of costs: physical and non-physical costs of operation. For trajectories with skewed firm sizes (“missing middle”) and missing markets, which can be found in Bihar, the latter costs matter just as much as the former in terms of entrepreneurship. While efficiency in operations is studied for selected sub-sectors in Bihar’s food processing to assess the main sources of inefficiency in minimizing the physical costs of operations, non-physical costs are studied using the construct of region-based counterfactual thinking (rCFT) and its relationship with the perception of risk for entrepreneurs. rCFT offers a new concept for understanding the mindset of the entrepreneur, in which the regional identity plays a significant role. The empirical content is based on a primary survey of food processing in Bihar. Additional policy questions, such as the choice between spatial collocation of food parks or cluster-based development of unique sub-sectors, are explored through an analysis of the policy network that supports entrepreneurship. Issues arising from the government’s policy choices, particularly vertically targeted industrial policies, can influence industrial outcomes and are particularly relevant for regions like Bihar. While policy evaluation for Bihar’s processed food industry yields insights on policy targeting for decision-makers in the government, examples of parallel narratives from global experiences in comparable regions shed new light on industrial development in processed food, which should be of interest to business practitioners, academic researchers and policymakers alike.

Download or read book Gopalganj to Raisina written by Laloo Prasad Yadav and published by Rupa Publications. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few Indian politicians can match the mass appeal and charisma of Lalu Prasad Yadav. As the leader of a political party, as the Chief Minister of Bihar and as Union Minister, he blazed a trail, bringing a dash of rustic wit and flair into the nation's political narrative of drab 'political correctness'. Although essentially a regional leader, his influence has extended beyond his home state, often impacting important political developments at the Centre. Gopalganj to Raisina Road is the journey of India's most colourful political leader. From his humble origins in Phulwaria village to his remarkable rise as Railway Minister, the narrative relives the twists and turns and the highs and lows of his life. In doing so, it reveals little-known facets of many inflection points in the nation's history: the Emergency, how he got V.P. Singh to implement the explosive Mandal Commission recommendations, the arrest of veteran BJP leader L.K. Advani during the latter's Rath Yatra, Sonia Gandhi's decision to not lead the UPA government, his acceptance of Manmohan Singh's candidature for prime ministership in 2004, and his dramatic relationship with friend-turned-foe Nitish Kumar. A political potboiler as never seen before, Lalu Prasad Yadav's autobiography is the most important book if one has to understand the evolution of the politics of the dalits and the marginalized.

Book Ruled or Misruled

Download or read book Ruled or Misruled written by Santosh Singh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-09 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I have become a fan of this man. One should just meet him to know...” This is what Nitish Kumar had sai about his now bitter foe Narendra Modi after NDA's 2004 defeat. “I feel like tying my PWD minister on an empty tractor trolley and run the vehicle at a speed of 60km per hourto make him realise how people suffer when they travel on these roads”, says Lalu, conceding the terrible conditionof Bihar roads. Ruled or Misruled, Story and Destiny of Bihar by The Indian Express' Assistant Editor SANTOSH SINGH offers a 360 degree journey of Bihar politics since Independence, especially since the Congress' downfall in 1990. An out and out reporter's book, it tells an interesting and tumultuous journey of the post-1990 legends of Bihar politics - Nitish Kumar, Lalu Prasad, Ram Vilas Paswan and Jitan Ram Manjhi with the legendary clash between Nitish Kumar and Narendra Modi - with the untold version on the 2010 dinner cancellation and Nitish's ambition, providing the third angle. Right from revealing JP's dilemma between Lalu and Nitish to socialist leader Karpoori Thakur out-thinking the Congress with his simplicity. From Jagannath Mishra making a confession on his controversial 1982 Anti-Press Bill to the numerous tales of vernaculariszation of politics and giving a voice to the poor by Lalu, the writer also traces the story of the making of the Ranbir Sena at the height of caste wars. The stories of repair, hope and construction under Nitish Kumar, disillusionment and new political realignment after the 2013 NDA split, Nitish and Lalu coming together again after two decades and Nitish almost walking out of the Lalu alliance again are just as captivating. Jitan Ram Manjhi, who makes startling revelations on how he played a dummy for Nitish and Ram Vilas Paswan, also concedes the real truth of his Godhra stand.

Book Battle for Bihar

Download or read book Battle for Bihar written by Arun Sinha and published by Penguin Enterprise. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the centre of India's social churn and high political drama is Bihar, a state with great untapped potential. After bursting on to the scene in the late 1980s and becoming Bihar's uncrowned ruler, Lalu Prasad Yadav was challenged by his erstwhile comrade Nitish Kumar. Unable to oust Lalu from power with his small, new party, Nitish made an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A quiet but canny politician, Nitish Kumar, as the chief minister, brought back law and order, roads, education and health to the fore of governance, aspects sorely lacking during Lalu's long rule. But the entry of Narendra Modi into the national political scene in 2013 rocked the alliance's boat. Nitish's switching of alliance between the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the BJP around that time cost him enormously in terms of political goodwill. Will Nitish be able to restore his esteem by making Bihar a model state for India's post-Independence journey? In this riveting narrative, seasoned journalist Arun Sinha tells the intertwined stories of Bihar's political theatre and Nitish's rule with incisive candour and in-depth research. The Battle for Bihar is a clear-sighted study of the turbulent state that could show India's politics its way forward.
