Book Investigations on Multi Output DC DC Converters

Download or read book Investigations on Multi Output DC DC Converters written by Sundraramank and published by . This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A converter with a single input and multiple outputs is known as a multi-output converter. The converter could be isolated or non-isolated. A non-isolated converter which uses a single common inductor for all the outputs is termed single-inductor multi-output converter. In a multi-output converter, a part of the converter circuit is common for all the outputs and a part of the circuit is exclusive to each output. This brings in cost advantages and improved power density. Fewer components also result in reduced losses. Multi-output converters have become very popular recently and many low power and portable applications widely use such converters. Since a part of the converter is common for all the outputs, achange in the load of one output affects the other outputs also. This is known as cross-regulation and the converters have to handle this apart from line and load regulation. This is what makes the topic complex and interesting and provides scope for further investigation, despite the large volume of research work already existing in this area. This thesis attempts to identify new topologies and control approaches for configuring such multi-output converters in all spheres, isolated or non-isolated, converters operating in discontinuous conduction mode or in continuous conduction mode and with uni-polar or bi-polar outputs.

Book Single inductor 4 Output DC DC Buck Converter with Comparator based Fixed frequency Single discharge Control

Download or read book Single inductor 4 Output DC DC Buck Converter with Comparator based Fixed frequency Single discharge Control written by Tae Young Goh and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With ever increasing demand of portable electronics, Single-Inductor Multiple-Output (SIMO) converters are becoming a popular option to design DC/DC converters to reduce cost and maintain long battery life. Single-discharge (SDC) control scheme is proposed to simplify the SIMO design, achieve low cross-regulation, and to support wide range of loads. The proposed converter with 4 outputs is prototyped using TSMC 0.18 Âľm BCD Gen II process. The chip is tested for its functionality, capable of converting 2.7 to 3.7 V input to 1, 1.2, 1.5, and 1.8 V outputs. The load regulation and efficiency performance of the converter is less than expected due to the unforeseen layout and bond wire parasitics. The peak efficiency of the converter is 73.2%, with the cross regulation of 0.143 mV/mA. The converter prototype is able to support wide range of loads, from disconnected loads to total output power of 1W.

Book Single inductor Multiple output Buck Converter with Parallel Source Transient Recovery

Download or read book Single inductor Multiple output Buck Converter with Parallel Source Transient Recovery written by Charles Jackson King (III.) and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To address the need for multiple regulated voltage supplies in electronic devices, this thesis presents a modeling and design study of a single-inductor, multiple-output (SIMO) DC-DC buck converter with parallel source transient recovery. This converter would provide substantial cost and space savings over traditional options for producing multiple supply voltages. Operating in pseudo-continuous conduction mode (PCCM), it can supply heavy loads while not suffering from cross-regulation problems. The parallel current source circuitry at each output will greatly dampen any voltage spikes that may occur due to sudden load changes, thus improving transient performance. While the entire converter could not be nicely simulated as envisioned, the initial steps and accomplishments outlined in this thesis show definite promise. The proposed converter certainly merits further research, as the problems encountered here most likely stem from implementation and control issues rather than fundamental flaws in the idea.

Book Single inductor Multiple output Power Converters

Download or read book Single inductor Multiple output Power Converters written by Yi Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DC-DC power converters are widely used in modern very large-scale integration (VLSI) systems to achieve on-chip voltage conversions, thereby appropriately powering different functional blocks with different supply voltages according to the operation requirements. The single-inductor multiple-output (SIMO) power converters are thus proposed as a cost-effective solution for implementing multiple DC-DC voltage conversions with a single inductor, leading to significantly reduced system form factor and cost of mass productions. Due to the new system architectures and operation schemes, the corresponding design challenges for SIMO power converters start to arise. This dissertation first reviews different types of DC-DC power converters on the respective advantages and disadvantages. The fundamentals of SIMO power converters are also discussed in terms of power stage topologies, operation modes and performance barriers. The adaptive pseudo-CCM (PCCM) operation is then proposed for SIMO power converters to achieve low inductor current ripples and low cross-regulation effect simultaneously, while maintaining low conduction and switching power loss of the freewheel switch. Two prototypes using digital and analog based controllers are developed to verify the adaptive PCCM operation with distributed and unified freewheel switching schemes. In order to overcome the inherently slow load transient response and potential cross-regulation effect, the paralleled hybrid SIMO power converter with adaptive current compensation (ACC) technique is proposed to achieve nano-second level load transient response with 500kHz switching frequency, while keeping high power efficiency. No measurable cross-regulation effect is observed throughout the entire load range. The SIMO power converters are further tailored to drive light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in backlighting applications. A SIMO parallel-string LED driver with local bus voltage optimization and single time-shared regulation loop is proposed to significantly reduce the headroom power loss and current balance error between different LED strings. A single-adaptive-output LED driver is also developed as an alternative solution for providing multiple supply voltage alternately in time domain with fast output voltage hopping. The SIMO power converter is further extended to a dual-input dual-output unified power management unit (PMU) for simultaneous solar harvesting and LED driving. The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and LED current regulation are constantly guaranteed regardless of the environmental or load variation.
