Book Singapore s National Wages Council An Insider s View

Download or read book Singapore s National Wages Council An Insider s View written by Chong Yah Lim and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-12-30 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Emeritus Professor LIM Chong-Yah, Founding Chairman of the tripartite National Wages Council (NWC), this unique volume offers readers an insider's view of the genesis and the evolution of the wage determination mechanism and system in Singapore under the aegis of the NWC. As a tripartite body dealing with wages, wage policies and wage-related matters and promoting Growth with Equity, the NWC played a critical role in transforming industrial relations in Singapore from the then confrontational approach to that of mutual understanding, esprit de corps and social co-partnership. Drawing from his 30-year experience as NWC Chairman (1972-2001), Singapore's eminent Economics Professor shares with readers the important process and problems of seeking equitable wage increases through tripartite consensus based on a yearly national wage guideline system. The book also chronicles the role of the NWC in crisis management in 1974, 1985 and 1998, and in Economic Restructuring, 1979-1981. The structure and operation of this unique Singapore institution and the interesting problems of securing unanimity of support from the three tripartite partners are revealed in the book. Some important NWC personalities and their concerns and unique contributions are interestingly covered, anecdotally.

Book Governance Innovations in the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book Governance Innovations in the Asia Pacific Region written by Gambhir Bhatta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1998. The debate on what constitutes good governance - and more importantly, how to attain it - is not a new issue. The elusive - and pluralistic - nature of governance ensures that much more needs to be studied about the specific incidence of good governance before a unifying theme on how exactly to develop a universal framework of application of governance can be finalized. It is within this context that this book seeks to fill a vacuum in the theory-practice dichotomy that, it argues, has dominated the debate on governance so far.

Download or read book Eyes on the Prize written by Connie Carter and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most law and development books focus on "what went wrong". Eyes on the Prize is an exception: it focuses on "what went right" in Singapore's transformation from squalid colony to successful growth-oriented, capitalist state. It questions the efficacy and nature of the role of law in the forty-year transformation, in the light of traditional and neo-traditional theories of law and development. It has not been the "rule of law" as such that has contributed to Singapore's development. Rather it has been law as the embodiment of "mature policy" of a goal-oriented, politically stable, educated, largely non-corrupt, communitarian and authoritarian state bureaucracy, which was grafted onto the remnants of the previous colonial administrative structures. Dr Carter examines Singapore's economic development in relation to labour law, land law, and intellectual property law, testing these against key aspects of law and development theories. While analyses of the former challenge the law and development convergence theory, that of intellectual property law uncovers the transforming impact of global influences such as the WTO. As such, the book provides a novel and balanced account for the student of law and economic development.
