This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current book addresses the development of mental state understanding in children with typical and atypical population, and reports new suggestions about the way to evaluate it and to support it through training. The presented frame is multifaceted. In respect to typical populations, the role of maternal reflective functioning, language, communication, and educational contexts has been deepened; and the association with internalizing/externalizing behaviors, performances in spatial tasks and pragmatics has been addressed as well. As to atypical populations, deficits in mental states understanding are reported for children with different developmental disorders or impairments, as the agenesis of the corpus callosum, Down Syndrome, preterm birth, Autism Spectrum Disorder, hearing impairment and personality difficulties such as anxiety. Overall, the papers collected in our book allow a better understanding of the mechanisms influencing mental state understanding and the effects of mental state comprehension on development.
Download or read book Buddhist Psalms Annotated Edition written by Lily Allen Beck and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive annotation of more than 10.000 words about the history and basics of Buddhism, written by Thomas William Rhys Davids With the Buddhist faith there came the germ of the belief that the Gautama Buddha in his own grandeur bore witness to One Greater—the Amitabha or Amida Buddha—that One who in boundless Light abideth, life of the Universe, without colour, without form, the Lover of man, his Protector and Refuge. He may, He must be worshipped, for in Him are all the essential attributes of Deity, and He, the Saviour of mankind, has prepared a pure land of peace for his servants, beyond the storms of life and death. This belief eventually crystallised and became a dogma in the faith of the Pure Land, known in Japan as Jōdo Shinshu, a faith held by the majority of the Japanese people. It is a belief which has spread also in Eastern Siberia, many parts of China, Hawaii, and, in fact, where-ever the Japanese race has spread. And the man who stated this belief for all time was Shinran Shōnin, author of the Psalms here presented.

Book excerpt: It is a singular fact that though many of the earlier Buddhist Scriptures have been translated by competent scholars, comparatively little attention has been paid to later Buddhist devotional writings, and this although the developments of Buddhism in China and Japan give them the deepest interest as reflecting the spiritual mind of those two great countries. They cannot, however, be understood without some knowledge of the faith which passed so entirely into their life that in its growth it lost some of its own infant traits and took on others, rooted, no doubt, in the beginnings in India, but expanded and changed as the features of the child may be forgotten in the face of the man and yet perpetuate the unbroken succession of heredity. It is especially true that Japan cannot be understood without some knowledge of the Buddhism of the Greater Vehicle (as the developed form is called), for it was the influence that moulded her youth as a nation, that shaped her aspirations, and was the inspiration of her art, not only in the written word, but in every art and higher handicraftsman-ship that makes her what she is. Whatever centuries may pass or the future hold in store for her, Japan can never lose the stamp of Buddhism in her outer or her spiritual life.

Download or read book Globalizing Education Educating the Local written by Ian Stronach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-16 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical and deconstructive account of global discourses on education, arguing that these overblown ‘hypernarratives’ are neither economically, technically nor philosophically defensible. Nor even sane. Their ‘mythic economic instrumentalism’ mimic rather than meet the economic needs of global capitalism in ways that the Crash of 2008 brings into vivid disarray. They reduce national education to the same ‘hollowed out’ state as national capitalisms, subject to global pseudo-accountancy and fads. The book calls for a philosophical and methodological revolution, arguing for more transformative narratives that remodel qualitative inquiry, particularly in addressing a more performative rather than representative ideal. The first part of the book aims to critique, deconstruct and satirise contemporary assumptions about educational achievement and outputs, the nature of contemporary educational discourses, and the nature of the professionalism that sustain them. The second part offers innovative postmodernist ways of reconstructing a theory and methodology that aims at ‘educating the local’ rather than succumbing to the fantasies of the universal. This is a very timely book in that the economic crisis re-exposes the mythic nature of education-economic linkages, putting discourses prefaced on such ‘connections’ into parallel crisis. Our global educational discourses have also crashed, and new futures need urgently to be found. Such a ‘turnaround’ is both proposed and argued for. The book will appeal to a wide range of readers who are committed to educational and cultural change, and who are interested in a new politics of education. It will have an immediate relevance and appeal in the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand in particular.

Book excerpt: GOODBYE MORALITY is the novel about a man who takes the road less travelled to rise to unbelievable heights within the criminal world. John Forbes, the main character, comes from a modest background, but has grown up on the Craven Estate in Dorset, where his mother lives and works as a housekeeper. This is a place of strong contrast between being wealthy or poor. Through various criminal enterprises, which inevitably include the use of violence and murder, John builds a considerable fortune. His marriage to Catherine, the daughter of Lord and Lade Craven produces a son, Michael, upon whom John dotes. However, John continues a serious love affair with the artist Mona Hobson whose talent he helps validate by secretly buying up the paintings. Wise enough to know his own limitation, he goes into partnership with John Elgberg, a Dane with a past and his extrovert wife, Andrea, moving the ‘Invisible Company’ to Mallorca. After some years the company financial transaction attracts police attention. When John’s son Michael dies of leukaemia, his marriage falls apart. Devastated, John moves to a remote lavender farm in the South of France, where he is plagued with growing doubts about the life he has created, the death of his son and the shocking decisions he has taken. John is unable to make the break needed even if he finds love with the unimpressionable local woman Cecilia. An unforgettable crime thriller, with characters you will never forget.
Download or read book Marlborough His Life and Times 1934 written by Winston S. Churchill and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume in the Nobel Prize winner’s biography of John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough: “The greatest historical work written in our century” (Leo Strauss). After the defeat of the Conservative government in the 1929 general election, Winston S. Churchill entered a period of political exile; a time he referred to as “the wilderness years.” It was during this time that Churchill began his work on Marlborough: His Life and Times, widely considered to be one of his most ambitious and masterful literary works. Although not as well remembered as his more famous descendant—Churchill himself—Marlborough was an influential soldier and statesman of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Great Britain, known in his day as a gifted military commander who never lost a battle. This second volume of Churchill’s four-part biography brings Marlborough’s military successes, political intrigues, and personal passions to life, while his descendant reflects “on the perplexities of alliances, the paradoxes of strategy, and the stresses of combat” (Foreign Affairs). “An inexhaustible mine of political wisdom and understanding, which should be required reading for every student of political science.” —Leo Strauss
