Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MONGOLIA: THE LAND OF GODS, MEN… AND BEASTS. The legend lives: that a reincarnated Buddhist leader would once again drag the peoples of Mongolia to their feet, those once and future conquerors of the world. Ja Lama is, for some, the answer and savior – a reincarnation from the revered lineage of Genghis Khan. Born into a group of exiled Mongols in southern Russia in the 19th century, his parents whisk him back toward the homeland for formal training as a Buddhist monk. His boyhood dreams are of a strong and united Mongolia… and reaching the promised land, the golden subterranean city of Agharti. But death dogs his every step, from the Tibetan monastery to battles with the hated Russians and the Chinese. He collects followers like the crusty sidekick Jimbe and thousands of other hardened nomadic peoples on the wide-open steppes. Ja Lama seizes the reins of power across the widest expanses of wildest western Mongolia, using his powers of will and a superhuman ability to survive the wounds of war. The strong and hopeful of Asia alike rally to the side of the monk with Colt revolvers under his robes. The world closes in. There are too many enemies, and too many empires teetering close to collapse all around him as the evils of the 20th century marshal their forces. Can the feared and revered “Lama with a Gun” overcome the wounds of soul and body to unite his peoples for one last drive across Asia?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outsiders and Insiders is a collection of essays and reviews in exceptionally simple and lucid style about post-modern Indian English literature. It is a mine of critical insights into the work of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala that has gone unnoticed in India and other prominent Indian English writers as E.M.Forster, Salman Rushdie, Shashi Tharoor, Ananth Murthi, Arundhati Roy and other Indian English writers. The reviews which appeared in World Literature Today, Times of India, Quest, Youth Times and other prestigious journals and papers present a panoramic view of the emerging Indian English literature. Short and pithy, they are suffused with sharp critical comments. Bypassing such pot holes as post-colonialism, post-structuralism, post-modernism the book takes you straight to the heart of the literary work under discussion and makes you understand it's worth, its intricacies, its beauty and its achievements. In a way, it marks a new beginning in literary criticism.

Book excerpt: Two novels and two collections of poetry, all powerful reflections on the AIDS experience, from the National Book Award–winning author of Becoming a Man. Afterlife: Three men bond after their lovers die of AIDS, all within a week of one another in the same Los Angeles hospital. Each of the men react differently to the situation he’s in, but no matter the path each takes, they are all searching for a way to live and love again. Halfway Home: After being diagnosed with AIDS, Tom moves to a California beach house to live out the rest of his life in peace. But the unexpected reappearance of his troubled brother quickly changes everything in this novel about anger, reconciliation, love, and danger. Love Alone: Following his partner Roger Horwitz’s death from AIDS in 1986, Paul Monette threw himself into these elegies. Writing them, he says, “quite literally kept me alive.” Both beautifully written and deeply affecting, every poem is full of resentment, sorrow, tenderness, and a palpable sense of grief—but also love. West of Yesterday, East of Summer: This stunning career-spanning collection includes Monette’s early work as well as the beautiful and wrenching poems borne out of immense loss. Written with characteristic wit, these poems deftly traverse humor, rage, love, and mourning.

Book The international politics of the Middle East

Download or read book The international politics of the Middle East written by Raymond Hinnebusch and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This text aims to fill a gap in the field of Middle Eastern political studies by combining international relations theory with concrete case studies. It begins with an overview of the rules and features of the Middle East regional system—the arena in which the local states, including Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Israel and the Arab states of Syria, Jordan and Iraq, operate. The book goes on to analyse foreign-policy-making in key states, illustrating how systemic determinants constrain this policy-making, and how these constraints are dealt with in distinctive ways depending on the particular domestic features of the individual states. Finally, it goes on to look at the outcomes of state policies by examining several major conflicts including the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Gulf War, and the system of regional alignment. The study assesses the impact of international penetration in the region, including the historic reasons behind the formation of the regional state system. It also analyses the continued role of external great powers, such as the United States and the former Soviet Union, and explains the process by which the region has become incorporated into the global capitalist market.

Book The Sins of the Nation and the Ritual of Apologies

Download or read book The Sins of the Nation and the Ritual of Apologies written by Danielle Celermajer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-27 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last years of the twentieth century, political leaders the world over began to apologize for wrongs in their nations' pasts. Many dismissed these apologies as 'mere words', cynical attempts to avoid more costly forms of reparation; others rejected them as inappropriate encroachments into politics or forms of action that belonged in personal relationships or religion. To understand apology's extraordinary political emergence, we have to suspend our automatic interpretations of what it means for nations to apologize and interrogate their meaning afresh. Taking the reader on a journey through apology's religious history and contemporary apologetic dramas, this book argues that the apologetic phenomenon marks a new stage in our recognition of the importance of collective responsibility, the place of ritual in addressing national wrongs, and the contribution that practices that once belonged in the religious sphere might make to contemporary politics.
