Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1927 release of Fritz Lang’s pioneer film Metropolis, science fiction cinema has largely been regarded a Western genre. In Simultaneous Worlds, Jennifer L. Feeley and Sarah Ann Wells showcase authors who challenge this notion by focusing on cinemas and cultures, from Cuba to North Korea, not traditionally associated with science fiction. This collection introduces films about a metal-eating monster who helps peasants overthrow an exploitative court, an inflatable sex doll who comes to life, a desert planet where matchsticks are more valuable than money, and more. Simultaneous Worlds is the first volume to bring a transnational, interdisciplinary lens to science fiction cinema. Encountering some of the best emerging and established voices in the field, readers will become immersed in discussions of well-known works such as the Ghost in the Shell franchise and Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 alongside lesser-known but equally fascinating works by African, Asian, European, and South American filmmakers. Divided into five parts that cover theoretical concerns such as new media economies, translation, the Global South, cyborgs, and socialist and postsocialist cinema, these essays trace cinema’s role in imagining global communities and power struggles. Considering both individual films and the broader networks of production, distribution, and exhibition, Simultaneous Worlds illustrates how film industries across the globe take part in visualizing the perils of globalization and technological modernity. Ultimately, this book opens new ways of thinking about world cinema and our understanding of the world at large.

Book The Many Worlds of Hugh Everett III

Download or read book The Many Worlds of Hugh Everett III written by Peter Byrne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-06 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of Hugh Everett III (1930-1982) who invented a theory of multiple universes that has had a profound impact on physics and philosophy. Everett strove to bring a "rational" order to the interlacing worlds of nuclear war and physics, even as his personal world disintegrated because of his indulgent lifestyle. Using Everett's unpublished papers and dozens of interviews, the book paints a detailed portrait of a man who influenced foundational thinking in quantum mechanics by inventing a way of viewing the universe from inside (known as the universal wave function). In addition to his famous interpretation of quantum mechanics, Everett wrote one of the classic papers in game theory; invented computer algorithms that revolutionized military operations research; and did pioneering work in artificial intelligence. As a Cold Warrior, he designed systems that modelled human behaviour along rational lines, and yet he was largely oblivious to the emotional damage his irrational behaviour inflicted upon his family, lovers and business partners. But he left behind, in the papers on which this book is based, a fascinating record of his life, including correspondence with the leading scientific minds of the day, that illuminates the often bitter struggle over the interpretation of the mystery of measurement at the heart of quantum mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A third edition of this book is now available. Negotiating a Complex World introduces undergraduate students of international relations to the high stakes world of international negotiation. The book uses the analogy of a board game as an organizing technique and includes many real-world cases and examples to illustrate important concepts and relationships. The authors highlight the intensity of crisis situations for negotiators, the role of culture in communication, and the impact of domestic-level politics on international negotiations. The book provides students with the tools they need to analyze why some negotiations are ultimately successful, while others end in failure. This innovative text also provides exercises and learning approaches to enable students to understand the complexity of negotiation by engaging in aspects of the diplomatic process themselves.

Book Simultaneous Treatment of Parent and Child

Download or read book Simultaneous Treatment of Parent and Child written by Saralea Chazan and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2003-01-31 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many child-care professionals work therapeutically with both parent and child and are increasingly focusing on the role of parents, yet there is very little information and guidance to help professionals in this work. Saralea E. Chazan's introduction to the simultaneous treatment of parent and child brings together theoretical background and suggestions for practice in an accessible and comprehensive format. Taking the reader through the theory of simultaneous treatment and the psychological processes underlying it she draws on three in-depth case studies of children she has worked with. She shows how effective treatment of parent and child by the same therapist either in combined or separate sessions can bring about significant therapeutic effects in a child's development and sense of self. This useful book will be a welcome resource for social workers, child psychiatrists, family therapists and other professionals working with children.

Book excerpt: Pakistani migrant families in Denmark find themselves in a specific ethno-national, post-9/11 environment where Muslim immigrants are subjected to processes of non-recognition, exclusion and securitization. This ethnographic study explores how, why, and at what costs notions of relatedness, identity, and belonging are being renegotiated within local families and transnational kinship networks. Each entry point concerns the destructive–productive constitution of family life, where neglected responsibilities, obligations, and trust lead not only to broken relationships, but also, and inevitably, to the innovative creation of new ones. By connecting the micro-politics of the migrant family with the macro-politics of the nation state and global conjunctures in general, the book argues that securitization and suspicion—launched in the name of “integration”—escalate internal community dynamics and processes of family upheaval in unpredicted ways.

Book Mediated Identities in the Futures of Place Emerging Practices and Spatial Cultures

Download or read book Mediated Identities in the Futures of Place Emerging Practices and Spatial Cultures written by Lakshmi Priya Rajendran and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the emerging problems and opportunities that are posed by media innovations, spatial typologies, and cultural trends in (re)shaping identities within the fast-changing milieus of the early 21st Century. Addressing a range of social and spatial scales and using a phenomenological frame of reference, the book draws on the works of Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty and Don Hide to bridge the seemingly disparate, yet related theoretical perspectives across a number of disciplines. Various perspectives are put forward from media, human geography, cultural studies, technologies, urban design and architecture etc. and looked at thematically from networked culture and digital interface (and other) perspectives. The book probes the ways in which new digital media trends affect how and what we communicate, and how they drive and reshape our everyday practices. This mediatization of space, with fast evolving communication platforms and applications of digital representations, offers challenges to our notions of space, identity and culture and the book explores the diverse yet connected levels of technology and people interaction.
