Book excerpt: Particulate processes are characterized by the co-presence of a contin uous phase and a dispersed (particulate) phase, and are widely used in industry for the manufacturing of many high-value products. Examples include the crystallization of proteins for pharmaceutical applications, the emulsion polymerization reactors for the production of latex, the aerosol synthesis of titania powder used in the production of white pig ments, and the thermal spray processing of nanostructured coatings. It is now well understood that the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of materials made with particulates depend heavily on the characteristics of the corresponding particle size distribution. This fact, together with recent advances in dynamics of infinite-dimensional sys tems and nonlinear control theory, has motivated extensive research on model-based control of particulate processes using population balances to achieve tight control of particle size distributions. This book - the first of its kind - presents general methods for the synthesis of nonlinear, robust and constrained feedback controllers for broad classes of particulate process models and illustrates their applica tions to industrially-important crystallization, aerosol and thermal spray processes. The controllers use a finite number of measurement sensors and control actuators to achieve stabilization of the closed-loop system, output tracking, attenuation of the effect of model uncertainty and han dling of actuator saturation.

It is based on the International Workshop on Design and Operation of Atmospheric Pressure Fluidized Bed Boilers, organized by the Center for Energy Studies, Technical University of Nova Scotia in Halifax on 24-45 June 1983. The volume begins by presenting a simplified approach to the design of a fluidized bed boiler and an overview of problems in fluidized-bed combustion (FBC). These are followed by separate chapters on the equations and concepts needed to estimate key hydrodynamic parameters; the key factors and terms to be considered in selecting FBC for specific applications; and principles in the design of air distributors for a fluidized bed boiler. Subsequent chapters discuss heat transfer to surfaces in fluidized beds; the pollution control of fluidized bed combustion of solid fuels; and materials selection in atmospheric fluidized bed combustion systems. The final two chapters are devoted to applications. These include the operational and performance results of TVA's 20-MW Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Combustion (AFBC) Pilot Plant in Kentucky; and the performance of Canada's first commercial FBC boiler plant, located at CFB Summerside, PEI.

The results of 24 individual research projects are presented. The main objective of the research programme was to provide a better understanding of the physical basis for multiphase gas-liquid flows as they are found in numerous chemical and biochemical reactors. The research comprises steady and unsteady multiphase flows in three frequently found reactor configurations, namely bubble columns without interiors, airlift loop reactors, and aerated stirred vessels. For this purpose new and improved measurement techniques were developed. From the resulting knowledge and data, new and refined models for describing the underlying physical processes were developed, which were used for the establishment and improvement of analytic as well as numerical methods for predicting multiphase reactors. Thereby, the development, lay-out and scale-up of such processes should be possible on a more reliable basis.

Book excerpt: This book had its origins in a meeting between two (relatively) young particle technology researchers on Rehobeth Beach in Delaware in 1992 near the holiday house of Reg Davies (then Director of the Particle Science and Technology Research Center in Dupont). As we played in the sand, we shared an excitement for developments in particle technology, especially particle characterization, that would lead operations such as granulation to be placed on a sound scientific and engineering footing. The immediate outcome from this interaction was the development of new industry short courses in granulation and related topics which we taught together both in Australia and North America. This book follows closely the structure and approaches developed in these courses, particularly the emphasis on particle design in granulation, where the impact of both formulation properties and process variables on product attributes needs to be understood and quantified. The book has been a long time in the making. We have been actively preparing the book for at least five years. Although the chapters have relatively good bibliographies, this book is not a review of the field. Rather it is an attempt by the authors to present a comprehensive engineering approach to granulator design, scale up and operation. It is exciting for us to see the explosion of research interest around the world in this area in the last five to seven years. Some of the most recent work will have to find its way into the second edition.

This book presents the proceedings of ParCo2019, with the goal of making the many fascinating topics discussed at the meeting accessible to a broader audience. The proceedings contains 57 contributions in total, all of which have been peer-reviewed after their presentation.
