Book Scientific Foundations for the Simulation of Ecosystem Function and Management in FORCYTE 11

Download or read book Scientific Foundations for the Simulation of Ecosystem Function and Management in FORCYTE 11 written by J. P. Kimmins and published by Forestry Canada, Northern Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1993 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FORCYTE-11 (FORest nutrient Cycling and Yield Trend Evaluator) forest simulation model combines the traditional historical bioassay modeling approach with process-based simulation modeling. It provides a method of predicting future forest biomass yield under a variety of management conditions. The hybrid simulation approach to modeling the management and long-term productivity of forested ecosystems is reviewed, and the representation of production ecology, succession, and various nutrient transfer pathways in FORCYTE-11 are described. The key driving function in the model (foliage nitrogen efficiency), the concept of site quality, and the simulation of site quality change that is used in the model are discussed. The importance of an accurate definition of the state of the simulated ecosystem at the start of a run is emphasized, and the use of the ECOSTATE (STATE of the ECOsystem, as generated by FORCYTE-11) file in this process is described. Examples of how FORCYTE-11 can simulate secondary succession and the impacts of forest management on ecosystem form and function are given. There is a brief review of the limitations of the FORCYTE-11 modeling approach.

Book Modeling Carbon and Nitrogen Dynamics for Soil Management

Download or read book Modeling Carbon and Nitrogen Dynamics for Soil Management written by M.J. Shaffer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-05-07 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good management practices for carbon and nitrogen are vital to crop productivity and soil sustainability, as well as to the reduction of global greenhouse gases and environmental pollution. Since the 1950's, mathematical models have advanced our understanding of carbon and nitrogen cycling at both the micro- and macro-scales. However, many of the models are scattered in the literature, undergo constant modification, and similar models can have different names. Modeling Carbon and Nitrogen Dynamics for Soil Management clarifies the confusion by presenting a systematic summary of the various models available. It provides information about strengths and weaknesses, level of complexity, easiness of use, and application range of each model. In nineteen chapters, internationally known model developers and users update you on the current status and future direction of carbon and nitrogen modeling. The book's coverage ranges from theoretical comparison of models to application of models to soil management problems, from laboratory applications to field and watershed scale applications, from short-term simulation to long-term prediction, and from DOS-based computer programs to Object-Oriented and Graphical Interface designs. With this broad scope, Modeling Carbon and Nitrogen Dynamics for Soil Management provides the tools to manage complex carbon/nitrogen processes effectively.

Book Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems

Download or read book Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems written by Brian Harrison Walker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-11-13 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major new book presents a collection of essays by leading authorities who address the current state of knowledge. The chapters bring together the early results of an international scientific research program designed to address what will happen to our ability to produce food and fiber, and what effects there will be on biological diversity under rapid environmental change. This book addresses how these changes to terrestrial ecosystems will feed back to further environmental change. International in scope, this state-of-the-art assessment will interest policymakers, students and scientists interested in global change, climate change and biodiversity. Special features include descriptions of a dynamic global vegetation model, developing generic crop models and a special section on the emerging discipline of global ecology.
