Book excerpt: Training needs have long existed for skills in tactically dealing with variations in communications capability that occur on dynamic battlefields. These communications realism training needs are becoming more critical with the many advances in electronic communications technology. The new Close Combat Tactical Trainer (CCTT) will be the first training environment developed to simulate variations in electronics communications quality as would occur realistically. The CCTT was used to examine tactical communications training needs and simulation based training strategies for Armor and Mechanized Infantry platoons. Communications realism simulation capabilities of an initial version of the CCTT were then evaluated in light of these training needs and strategies. Overall communications realism training requirements for warfighters were found to constitute a general model that effectively served as an instrument to define platoon training requirements. Structured training was identified as the most appropriate training. It is recommended that these stages be designed into vignettes or tables integrated into exercises developed to meet platoon training goals related to maneuver and engagement. Possible enhancements to CCTT's simulation of communications realism were also identified and their potential payoffs discussed.

The CCTT is the first part of the Combined Anms Tactical Training (CATT) system providing operational training for combined arms foroes on a virtual battlefield. The U.S. Army Research Institute (ARI) also is developing structured CCTT training support packages TSPs) for required mission and task training. Successfiil structured training in the Virtual Training program (VTP) with Simulation Networking (SIMNET) established a model for similar CaT training. This report examines integrated system management needed to implement suceessfull training with the CCTT and its TSPs. While CCTT development has focused on simulation requirements, and TSP development has focused on training requirements, total system management has been a secondary consideration. Conceived in a Total Quality Management (TQM) framework, the report proposes processes designed to sustain and improve the training effectiveness of the CCTT thronghout system life. The emphasis is on continuous monitoring of training proces and products to provide management feedback, and establishing process action teams to define and solve system problems. Following this section, the lessons learned section presents issues which framed the project's progress and development, and which may provide insight and directions for additional developmental work. Book excerpt: The search for new, innovative approaches to training has led the U.S. Army Simulation, Training and Instrumentation Command (STRICOM) in Orlando, Florida to develop a new family of high technology, computer-based training facilities called the Combined Arms Tactical Trainer (CATT). These training facilities will support realistic, interactive, combined arms training involving army units at the same or different locations operating in a virtual environment on a digitized battlefield. The first of the CATT family to be developed will be the Close Combat Tactical Trainer facility featuring manned simulator modules for training armored and mechanized forces at battalion and below. Two versions of the CCTT system are under development: fixed-site system and mobile systems. Figure 1 below depicts the general layout and major components of a fixed-site CCTT facility. The manned simulator modules of the CCTT include main battle tanks, armored personnel carriers and command and control vehicles. The operations center emulates and controls battlefield operating systems that habitually train with the unit undergoing training. The after action review consoles replay segments of a training scenarios for the training unit to illustrate training lessons. The master control console starts and ends the training scenarios, and controls the tempo of the training scenario as well. The maintance console monitors the systems and conducts system diagnostics. There are also consoles for controlling the computer generated, and semiautomatic forces that populate the digitized battlefield during scenario execution.

The CITT provides unit commanders and other trainers with comprehensive information on CCTT and on structured training as well as the ability to produce exercise Training Support Packages. Previous projects produced the design for the objective CITT and prototype applications in desktop and web-based formats. The current project produced a fully-fieldable CITT including the embedded CCTT Exercise Initialization Tool. This version was expanded to include stability and support operations capabilities, use of CCTT enhancements, and increased flexibility of file use to allow it to run on any computer with sufficient resources. Near-, mid-, and long-term implementation strategies and fielding plans were developed and are presented along with lessons learned and recommendations for future actions."--DTIC.
